Pearsall's Artist/Label Tribute Mixes

For my final mix of 2021 I'm dropping something I've wanted to do for quite some time, and that I'm very excited to share with you ... my tribute to the amazing 90's output of the one and only @armandvanhelden! I know I generally don't do much house music stuff, but I've been a fan of his stuff for literally 25 years, so I thought the moment was right to put together a little something special. The mix is a selection of 30 of his tracks and remixes, organized in chronological order from 1993 to 1997 (OK, there are a few from '93 and '98, but the principle still holds), which allows you to really hear how his sound progressed over the course of just a few years. 

Given the man's unbelievably prolific output in those years you could do such a mix in so many ways, so it goes without saying that this is just my take - I've left a few of the most obvious anthems out (the Tori Amos and Sneaker Pimps remixes most obviously), but I think that I've included a lot of great tunes, some famous, others more obscure.

I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed putting it together!

Few electronic music genres are more misunderstood or the subject of greater hostility than trance. But that's because a lot of it was and is terrible. But not the collected works of Nuclear Hyde ... this is real trance music.

So what is their sound and why do I think it is more real trance than the music of, say, Tiesto?

Well, above all, their music fulfilled the core imperative of trance - it was relentless, hypnotic music where percussive sounds were balanced with melodic flashes, where the energy came from the balance of elements not from taking the easy route of sounding really 'hard'. Pulsing, bouncing, driving - pick your adjective, they all basically describe the sound perfectly. Tracks that didn't rely on obviously anthemic elements to keep the dancefloor engaged and excited. And all of the tracks perfectly engineered with exemplary German precision to sound just gorgeous on a big sound system.

Bombs Over Bristol: The Addison Groove Tribute [The 780 Project Part 14]

For my last mix of the year, here's a little Christmas present from me to you: an all-vinyl tribute to my favorite new skool jungle producer: @tim-reaper!

He's probably best known for his atmospheric Amen tearouts, so of course there are plenty of tunes in that style included, but I also tried to show some of the diversity of his output, by also reaching for some rollers, some ragga jungle, and even some old skool hardcore/jungle tekno influenced stuff. This mix was thrown together in one take last night, so there are a few slightly rough moments, but overall I am very pleased with the final results - hopefully you will be as well!

Pearsall - Fear The (Tim) Reaper (An all-vinyl tribute to Tim Reaper, new skool jungle hero)

Carl Cox is pretty much the embodiment of the 'superstar dj'.

One interesting thing about Carl Cox, and something that is often forgotten, is that back in the early 90's he was one of the biggest names in the UK hardcore rave scene, and he fucking rocked at it. In a single set you could hear anything from British breakbeat hardcore to Dutch gabber, with Scottish bouncy techno, hard American acid and European hard trance all thrown in his trademark three-deck blender. 

Since he was so awesome, and so unique in many ways, I wanted my latest mix to be a tribute to what he was doing in his rave heyday - I wanted to boil down two years worth of his musical selections into a single mix, with nice and crisp audio quality and no shitty mc's. To do so, I built a database of 25 tracklistings from 1993/1994 and pulled together a tracklisting of 45 tunes that captures all of the elements of the Carl Cox rave experience. 

I am really happy with this mix, and I hope you enjoy it too!

The Power Of The Rave Side (A 100% Vinyl DJ Jedi Tribute)

London techno renegade @jeromehill is absolutely one of my favorite dance music producers / dj's. Although he made his name with techno, he is also equally versatile with electro, breaks, old skool rave, and more. His labels Don't, Super Rhythm Trax and Bleeper have been responsible for some of the finest dance tracks in recent years (in my opinion, of course!) and they are a must for anyone who likes to hear new reimaginings of old skool sounds, from jacking Chicago house to banging acid to Northern bleeps n' bass. So therefore I am very excited to drop this tribute mix, pulled together entirely on vinyl - I've managed to pull stuff from almost all of his back catalogue here. Enjoy!

Full Metal Jacking (A Jerome Hill Tribute Mix)

Since today is Frauentag (International Women's Day) and the Berlin city government has made this a public holiday, I had a little free time so I have just recorded this tribute to my favorite female junglist of all time ... the one and only DJ Rap! Having said that, basically the day is just a useful excuse to do the mix, because she is one of my favorite producers of all time, period. Anyways, big up @djrap - thanks for all the great music over the years!

As for this mix, this was recorded in one take with no preparation, I just pulled out a stack of records and hit record. Great tunes, acceptable mixing (hopefully!) - enjoy!

Squat Rocking 9: Tales Of Havok (A tribute to Manchester's most awesome acid label)

My first new mix of the year is a tribute to the almighty @super-rhythm-trax, the amazing retro-flavored label from London's @jeromehill.

This mix features 27 crucial cuts from the label, covering everything from Chicago-style jack trax to bumpin' electro, crispy breakbeats, luscious Detroit-style techno and, of course, a very very healthy serving of wibbletastic acid mayhem!

My first Mala tribute

Fenstern (A Second Mala Tribute)

If you're like me, you're spending a lot of time at home at the moment, and, assuming you are staying healthy (I hope so!), you need some music to listen to, right? I got you covered! This is a tribute to the early recordings of the legendary @djhypednb, East London's original scratchmaster and rave hero. To show off the amazing changes in his music back in the 90's, this mix takes four of his tracks / remixes from each year from 1993 to 1998 and then lines them up in chronological order, so that you can clearly hear the progression from hardcore to jungle to jump-up to early liquid funk. Enjoy!

Squat Rocking 10: Chris Liberator in the 90's (Tribute to London acid techno legend)

One of my hands-down favorite electro labels is Berlin's mighty @mechatronicamusic, a label and party collective run by @mejle, @electrodon, @milanhermess and @daribone, so I've put together a mix of a track each from (almost!) the first twenty releases (I didn't include number 19 because it's not really my thing - sorry!), covering their powerful electro sound that draws from artists across Europe.
