This Sonic Trail is a re-imagining of the art work From Surface to Surface by Susumu Koshimizu on display at Tate Modern.

The 14 miniature audio-tracks correspond to individual pieces of the art work. Just as the art work is made of wood, these audio tracks are created entirely from wooden surfaces being used to create sound. Where Koshimizu has used an industrial saw to cut and shape wood, MacLeod too has cut and shaped audio samples to create this trail.
The method used is a technique that originated in Paris in the 1950’s called musique concrète (concrete music), where audio samples are shaped and edited into music.

You can listen to the tracks in sequence or in any order of your choosing. Or experiment by using the shuffle feature of your audio player to create a random playback order.

Our Sonic Trails are pieces of sound art, they let you listen to recordings and compositions created by artists. Some allow you to experience somewhere entirely different to your surroundings, like the clicks and songs of whales and other under water animals while you’re walking through the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern or a choir singing in the Duveen galleries at Tate Britain. Some allow you to imagine the process that went into making a sculpture and some uncover hidden sounds which can normally only be heard at night.
