An improvised composition created whilst experimenting with the Native Instruments Giant VST piano. It seemed to compliment the ideas that were being generated at the time.
Why the title?  I hear the words in the melody, sometimes what seems so important in life and must be achieved suddenly becomes far less important a feeling of liberation.

Bob Seger once told the New York Times that "Like A Rock was inspired partly by the end of a relationship that had lasted for 11 years. You wonder where all that time went? But beyond that, it expresses my feeling that the best years of my life may have been in my late teens with no special commitments and no career". This iconic tune was used in an advertising campaign for Chevrolet trucks that ran from 1991 - 2004, making it indelibly associated with the vehicles. The song helped sell a lot of Silverados, and is considered one of the best choices for an ad campaign in The History of Music. 'Like a Rock' was the Title song from the thirteenth studio album of same name by American singer-songwriter Bob Seger, released in 1986. My own version humbly presented here with all due respect and appreciation for yet another Bob Seger Sparkly Gem. Did it in my own way, featuring Nylon Strings and Tele Tones floating around in the background.

Warming up my fingers and co-ordinating my hands. No thought. No reason, just playing up and down the keyboard. Still very agile. No arthritis. At this point in my life I couldn't ask for more.

Tinkering On The Keys #1

Hey…. I sleep like an old dog now that I am old. Although I wonder if I move my feet when I run in my dreams. And I did bark at the neighbor’s dog the other night. She was being noisy, so I joined in. Ha. Starlings are up in the old cottonwood now serenading the world, as the heat of the day is not yet upon us. But by midday they are usually gone. The heat is too intense. I think they head to the river to ride out the day. Maybe I should join them, like in the old days. Hanging down by the river, swimming and cooling off. I told a neighbor the other day, if he finds his political bumper sticker is inappropriately graffitied, it will be me who did it. Ha. And here I thought we were all in this together… how naive of me. Hee-hee. So back to the dreamlife of dogs… as with night and day, a lot of life can become an either or premise don’t ya think? I was always one to explore a middle ground by melding various ideologies together. Then I decided to become free of that paradigm view of life, and maybe see things as they were. Fascinatingly sad how polarized our species is, on practically everything that matters, and how unwilling we are to budge. So I wondered about that insofar as extricating myself from such nonsense, without that becoming just another polarized pursuit. As if you can’t tell by now, I am a dreamer. That does have its downside as there is a darker essence to all this babbling, as the song lyrics suggest, when the light becomes the dark. OK… the starlings just left for the river en mass. Ha ha. I have pondered about the relevance of dreams in my life for many years. But I wonder how relevant the rhyming of ‘stream’ with ‘dream’ was in ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat… as possibly a revelation into the nature of life? Or in some songs, rhyming is just a convenience of circumstance. Ha…. Are we really rowing ourselves gently along through our lives, in a daydreamy way of how we’d like to see the world? Or frantically chasing a dream on a flooded river, as we lose control of our leaky boat? Or maybe a little bit of both? Or maybe jumping ship to swim to shore? Maybe there is no boat at all? LONG TIME

Noodling around with a little repeat phrase on a felt piano, it decided it wanted to be this.

My music pieces are all piano improvisations expressing emotions. It is music telling stories without the words. In my earIy years I sang and played piano in piano bars or fronted bands of different styles, from country to heavy metal and to 40. I've been composing, teaching and performing most of my life.  I'm getting old(er) now 😔 but the great thing about creating music is it gets better the longer you play, and you have more to write about! 

This is what I leave of me to my generations to come who wonder where their desire to make music comes from. My mother, grandmother and great grandmother were both accomplished pianists when they were young. My son is also exceptional.  My great grandmother and gr grandfather sang and danced in minstrel shows (vaudeville) in the early 1900's. Kids today have no idea what life was like before moving pictures.  I now have great-grandchildren. They will know who I am through my music. When I am gone my music will still be here. What a wonderful thought!
