Ostinato Strings: The phrase library for complex chords
Ever since we started developing phrase libraries (and we've done quite a few now), we've been wanting to expand the harmonic material these libraries could output. We've never really been able to go beyond standard major and minor chords with our recorded phrases. There are many reasons for this; because our phrases are recorded live as a whole rather than constructed from smaller pieces, because there are hardware limitations to user's computers and because there are limits to the recording time we can allocate to a specific product while still keeping it affordable. Some of our products do contain different material, and with the harmonic shift function there are ways to approach things like 7th chords and sus chords, but until now we didn't have a way to play all the chords we wanted and also offer different inversions of these chords.
At the heart of the Ostinato series there is an entirely new process that we've been developing for quite some time now. From the recording stage, the entire approach is different from our regular phrase instruments in that we recorded separate intervals for various rhythm building blocks. After careful editing we combine these intervals through an intelligent script that builds them into chords in 5 different voicings and up to 4 inversions (the fourth only for 7th chords).
Not only does the engine build the chords based on the inversion you play in the chord area, but when you play in the harmonic shift area it will judge which inversion it plays based on the chord that came before it, the chord quality on the key you're in and the position of the chord you're triggering in that key. This ensures that transitions are smooth and harmonically correct. 
Ostinato recognises and plays 12 different chord types, it is our first instrument that can handle diminished, half-diminished, augmented chords and many more. For a full list check the user manual.
This is the first product in this new line of instruments that will coexist alongside both our Orchestral Series and our Phrase-Based libraries, bridging the gap by doing on specific thing exceptionally well... ostinato chords.

With Minimal, Sonokinetic delivers the fourth installment in our current range of orchestral instruments. We have listened to our users, and built an entirely new system from the ground up, defining what we think is a revolutionary novel direction in orchestral pattern-based sampling.

Minimal would suggest a particular music style, and many of the patterns available in this instrument are very well suited for that style. However, we’d like to stress that this is indeed a very flexible instrument, capable of enhancing a broad range of musical arrangements and compositions in a wide variety of styles. Where Minimal differs from libraries like Tutti and Vivace is in its section-based approach. All phrases are recorded per orchestral section and can be used separately or together and in any combination, allowing for a great deal of variations at your fingertips.

The first thing that would strike you is the non-apologetic interface style without any gloss. Apart from this being a respectful nod to our Dutch art heritage on the outside, it also very much references the “form follows function” approach that Dutch design is famous for. There are no superfluous elements and we’ve arranged everything in an intuitive way. You have every control in one screen within an uncrowded workspace. You might not suspect it from just looking at it, but there are a lot of complex functionalities at your disposal from this one screen. Recordings for Minimal took place in Zlin, Czech Republic, in the same hall and with the same team responsible for recording Tutti and Vivace. The performances have been edited with the same meticulous attention to detail and quality.

Many innovative functions grace this instrument, mostly under the hood, as we believe that technology is at its best when you don’t notice it. One of the functions that might need a bit more introduction is the harmonic shift function. This element of Minimal can lead to great sounding results and also serve as a very rewarding inspirational tool. So please read and digest the part of this manual dedicated to that function.

More visibly, and in lieu of popular request, we have found a way to greatly improve the score view. Despite the pixel restrictions of the Kontakt window we’ve managed to squeeze in a clear and accurate score view, although you can still order a digital full-scale copy of the score, if you so desire.

Sonokinetic’s next generation Choir library, Tutti Vox is a new take on sampling a 48 piece orchestral choir. 
A choir library has been on our to-do list ever since our company was in its infancy and now finally the time has come. This is not just any choir library as this project had to be approached Sonokinetic style, being as playable and flexible as a sampled choir can be whilst sounding completely realistic. 
We spent a lot of time developing the engine driving Tutti Vox and we are very proud indeed of what we have achieved; a new approach and an innovative way of working with sampled choir. 
Included in the package are three different tempo-synced instruments, focused on different elements of choral performance:
The main chunk is Tutti Vox Core, a large collection of unique vocal effects that warrant the name ‘Tutti’ because they are not dissimilar to (and hugely compatible with) our orchestral FX library of the same name. Think atonal risers, falls, crescendi, decrescendi, clusters, ethereal beds and a range of very cool ‘semi-random’ soundscapes that constantly evolve. Some of our loops are over 40 seconds long! Also included in the Core patch are full choir whispers: words, vowels, consonants and shouts, the other end of the spectrum. Whatever choir effect you need, Tutti Vox Core is your tool. It should be able to inspire and make your compositions instantly more human.
Tutti Vox Lingua is our multisampled instrument, where you choose word elements to construct complex phrases. Set up the words and then let your creativity run wild, playing them across the keyboard with soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections ranges configured to your taste. Do you want different sections to sing different words simultaneously? No problem with Lingua advanced, as you can program your choir sections independent of one another in ONE instance of Kontakt.
Also included in the package is Tutti Vox Spoken, unpitched spoken words recorded for male and female voices separately.

Orchestral sampled instrument for delicate moments and deafening silence. We have covered a lot of ground in our orchestral series already; there’s the scary Tutti, the uplifting Vivace, the understated Minimal, the driving Grosso and the majestic Capriccio. We’ve always had a yearning to capture something more delicate, and now we’ve done it… presenting “Sotto”. As a composer there are certain musical rules that you have to obey, and one of them is that there always has to be contrast. A loud passage will not sound really loud unless it’s contrasted by a softer counterpart, and a climax cannot arrive without a journey to get you there.  We have always been fascinated by the sound of a majestic orchestra hitting the brake pedal and laying down soft beds and patterns, and that is what we’ve achieved with this library. Anyone who has ever attempted to capture a live orchestra will be able to tell you that very quiet playing is a tricky thing to record. The softer you try to go, the closer you get to the breakpoint between sound and no sound. The starts of phrases in brass and woodwinds become increasingly hard to align for the players, resulting in beautiful imperfection. The balance of sound to mechanical noise tips slightly in favour of the mechanical noise, but to us it all sounds very much alive. There are a lot of beautiful beds with different playing techniques, like sul tasto, sul ponticello and harmonics for strings, frullato for woods and different mutes for brass. For Sotto we further expanded our voice leading concept to get even smoother transitions between chords. The combinations of different phrases and sections sound absolutely stunning, with a very warm and rich timbre. We’re so excited to add this product to our range as it stands proud alone and also complements other Sonokinetic orchestral products.  To add intimacy we have included a breath slider for woodwinds and brass that will add ‘air’ to the phrases, further blurring the line between sound and no sound, and musical sound versus human sound. We really wanted this to be a living breathing instrument that can add life to your compositions and feel we have succeeded in doing just that. We hope you agree.

Plonge tes yeux dans les yeux fixes / Des Satyresses our des Nixes                            Charles Baudelaire (L'Avertisseur, Fleurs du Mal)

"Plonge" (eng. "Plunge") for cello and 12 voices (2015) was commissioned by Henri Demarquette and the vocal Ensemble Sequenza 9.3  for their programme "Vocello" and premiered at a special concert at the Philharmonie de Paris on the 3rd of June.
As my previous pieces were mostly written for strings (especially cello) and voices, usually in "monochrome" ensembles, I was really curious to mix, fuse these timbres together in a very homogeneous texture, revealing the "cantabile" quality of both and exploring very different colours of different ranges of the cello which may correspond to different timbres of the choir.
When I discovered "Vocello" repertoire, I got completely taken by Dido's Lament by Henry Purcell the musicians included into their programme, which is based on a continuously descending basso continuo. In terms of baroque rethorics this figure is called catabasis, a musical symbol of the descent to the underworld. Then by a pure accident my attention had been captured by a related ecxerpt from Charles Baudelaire's poetry, creating a mystic vision of sinking into a state of stasis (Plonge tes yeux dans les yeux fixes / Des Satyresses our des Nixes from L'Avertisseur, Fleurs du Mal). So my piece is an acoustic metaphor of all these inspirations together. The musical process is an extremely gradual catabasis although with a "happier end", rather bringing to an ecstatic, hypnotic state unlike the tragic Purcell's final. The musical structure of the piece could remind of a whirling vortex that is gradually getting more and more slow, wide, profound until the cellist gets drowned and melted in the sea of voices which accumulate like increasing resonances of the cello line... Through this slowing vortex the connection between the musical time sensation and space is also being explored: the more the acoustic space is filled in with sounds, the more their spectrum becomes wider and richer, the more the time gets slow until completely freezes. Maximo fills a space in our phrase-based orchestral line-up that many composers working in media have been waiting for. Like the old adage, we didn't go home, we went BIG! Our enlarged and expanded orchestra worked overtime to play the biggest, baddest orchestral phrases possible. Not only is the sound huge, but the writing has been tailored to this specific set of instruments. Some phrases were composed specifically using unusual harmonic content like the odd flat 6th and flat 2nd intervals. We created a product that will fit in perfectly with any contemporary writing style. 
Of course all of the stuff you would expect in a Sonokinetic phrase-based instrument is there, so if you've used any of our instruments before you will be able to put Maximo to work right away without any trouble. Within minutes you'll be adding this big amazing sound to your palette. 
Using our midi drag and drop functionality doubling the orchestral phrases with a synth for that hybrid sound has never been easier. The full score is also available within the interface so you can peek under the hood and see what's going on compositionally with the phrases you are using and how the sound coming out of your speakers has been achieved.
Expanding the brass section and having them play their lungs out was a very visceral experience and we think it translates really well to the finished product. The sound has a 'kinetic' strength and brings about a joyous feeling that is hard to ignore. We've been smiling all the way through production with this one!
For the strings and woodwinds the emphasis is on the lower side of things too, with 8 double basses, 16 celli, 6 bassoons and a contrabassoon. We've made sure that the low content has enough pressure and presence to carry a mix all the way through, whatever you decide to add on top.
