For the 106th entry in the Honcho Podcast series, we welcome Chicago's @clubchow! Club Chow is a Taiwanese-American DJ and rave enthusiast currently based in Chicago. With a few different residencies, he delights in soundtracking a broad range of LGBTQ scenarios, from daytime events (Dim sum & drag, Mom Jeans), cruisey evenings at Steamworks Baths, to late nights at Berlin Nightclub or the occasional DIY function

A word about the mix:

With the long Chicago winter drawing to a close, I wanted to make a mix with a more distinct sense of transition as opposed to riding a particular vibe. It starts with a psychedelic spoken word track, builds with some tropical imagery and 2000s-era trippy tech, and ends somewhere else… hopefully joyous?

“Wanted to channel the spirit of pumping 90s dj energy. In honor of playing with Claude Young I wanted the set to be raw, full of risks, going with the progression of energy in the room. Riding the ebb and flow of mixes. Going with the progression of energy in the room; focused on telling a story throughout the set. Id describe it as fun, erotic, hypnotic, sexy, chunked and funky. One of my favorite things about the mix was including records i got the day of and 6 years ago.”

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. A quiet dancer who uses music to connect with others. 

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene? 
A. About 12 years as a dancer but 6 years as a dj. (I was a curious kid who stayed in the street)

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. This mix is a little rude, sticky but sweet. I wanted to pull elements from my queer haitian identity and experiences as an NYC native. A lot of the tracks selected are from DJs and artists I look up to. The grooves, syncopation and cuts I mix are to paint a picture of it being 2am in the club, you are pumping & dancing so hard that you are sweating your hair and clothes out but you can’t stop because the music feels too good. In my own way if I was old enough to play at sound factory or the tunnel, this is what it would sound like!
