With a luscious vocal from Sammie Bella, this tune is chilled, gorgeously balanced and certainly a fixture on any summer evening playlist! ‘Bad Habit’ is the 3rd track of the EP, bringing an epic old school vibe with the vocal sample and hard hitting drop. Filled with big drums and gritty basslines, the dark is accompanied well with light, floaty melodies and intelligent transitions. They finish the EP with ’Walk away’. This track ends the record in style with its catchy vocals and uplifting, energetic vibes throughout. Dropping on Soulvent Records, 19/04/2015, this EP is a well balanced, truly sublime piece of music. A radiant, intelligently produced soundtrack to the summer.

With Zane Lowe pedestalling the first glimpse into Bensley’s diverse soundscape, ‘Fandango’ was a precursor for this forthcoming debut. ‘Next Generation’ is a bold move; with drum & bass being a genre which has certainly stood the test of time, newcomers have incredibly big shoes to fill. However, Bensley incorporates an innovative and incredibly intricate set of production skills to hold a title of his own.

But what can you expect from an artist who was signed after sending a single demo to revered label head Andy C. That’s despite having no previous releases or having any other music available to stream online. He was somewhat of a mystery.
‘Fandango’ was that track. And it was premiered as a world exclusive on leading tastemaker Radio1, which followed with support from the likes of Mistajam on 1xtra, as well as DJs on both Kiss and XFM.

Already demonstrating his widespread appeal with just one track, his air of mystery is now about to be broken. He’s definitely an anomaly; being only nineteen and having impressed so many people.

‘Next Generation’ is a 10-track journey through an impressively diverse soundscape. Whether it’s half-time breakdowns or the incorporation if cross genre-pollination it shows an astounding ability which will not go unrecognised.
From the opening bars of ‘Wildfire’, to the softly spoken pads and atmospheric note arpeggios of ‘Rain Dance’, then wrapped up by aptly named closing track ‘Aftermath’, there’s no denying Bensley’s masterful artistry.

Title-track ‘Next Generation’ leads you by the hand with snippets of humanistic sample, flowing in and out of its construct. It’s built upon by striking note progressions, a relaying of patterns which chop and change the mix. Carefully placed subs add impact, with emphasis given on each break, carrying the track forward down a steep drop with each slab of bass.

Drawing together a dizzying and fresh array of new sounds, this album indicates why Bensley is a forerunner within the new generation of music comers. Its representative of the fast paced technological setting of music production he grew up around; it also proves that Bensley is able to tap into dimensions which are often unheard of in other bodies of work.

Next Generation

Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. They’re not scared to dip into unfamiliar territories, with Calyx’s cool vocals sitting on top of lulling guitar rhythms to provide the first part of a diverse and brilliantly crafted record. 

With an album laying just out of reach, each single is bringing us closer and closer to the inevitable. All four tracks prove their still a formidable force to be reckoned with; this LP will only emphasise that fact.

Vectasonic’s signature sound can be found throughout the release, which boasts chunky breaks, soothing atmospheric pads, pretty female vocals hooks, and some mid-bass growls to balance out the tracks.  “Mobius,” is one of the standout tracks from the release, as it unleashes a classic Amen break, and pairs it with a heavy sub bassline, dubby guitar licks, and ethereal female vocal samples.  This one sounds like an instant classic, inspired by the golden era of late 90’s Drum & Bass.  If you like that classic sound that pays homage to the pioneers of the sound, then you’re going to love this EP!

Vectasonic - After Hours

This is the second album sampler taken from the forthcoming 'Circadian Rhythms' LP by Kolectiv, offering a glimpse of the full 18-track journey.

Conceived as more than just a collection of tunes, the record unfolds like a night at a Drum & Bass rave. It begins with the first bassline pulling you in, builds into full peak-time intensity, and closes with reflective sounds that carry you home.

Written in the wake of the pandemic, 'Circadian Rhythms' stands as both a rebirth and a tribute to the culture that shaped Kolectiv. Much of the project was created from scratch, with the duo recording live drums, keys, and guitars, then weaving them together with original sound design. Carefully selected vocal collaborations bring depth and emotion, while atmospheric interludes give the album a cinematic flow from start to finish.

Mixed down in their newly upgraded studio, the LP balances technical precision with heartfelt expression. It is a journey, a statement, and a love letter to Drum & Bass in all its shades. The full project also features standout vocal work from PAV4N, Hijak MC, Illmatika, and Kerry Donnelly.

Kimbr - Flamethrower EP - Architecture Recordings - ARX102

Kimbr spent his 1990s youth banging drums in punk bands in Cheltenham. After being introduced to rave music in his late teens he found links between the quick tempos and blast beats of punk and the intricate breaks of dnb and jungle and relocated to Bristol to find out more about his new obsession. He was welcomed into the infamous Dissident collective and under the moniker Noisy Boy, began DJing on the Bristol warehouse party and club circuit, pushing amen driven, darkside techstep. Dissident put on their final epic party in 2010 but Kimbr continued DJing and in 2017 restarted his production journey. His tracks draw on influences from in and out of the dnb scene, bringing in the cinematic tension and dystopian aesthetic of science fiction, the swag of old skool hip hop and crushing basses reminiscent of guitar riffs, all contained within the recognisable sonics and structures of early 2000s drum and bass.

Emperor has been making waves over the past couple of years moonlighting with various camps but it was the keen ear of label boss Kasra that cottoned on early drawing him deep into the Critical ranks. If this new single is anything to go by, one of the best decisions Critical could have made.
The cinematic intro of ‘Begin’ is beautiful blend of strings, reversed fx and the sultry vocals of Georgia Yates who featured on the Enei album last year. All build to a haunting dropout before the next stage, an absolute nasty tech-stepping future roll-out that’s been getting Fabric in sweat these last few months. Twisted, uplifting and wonderfully emotive, this is another slice of Critical magic.
Next up and we’re treated to the vintage double-bass grooves of ‘She Said’. Another huge epic intro featuring a soaring vocal drifting over ethereal pads features here as hi-end percussion leads into the fattest bassline for a properly funked up dance floor workout. Think Roni Size ‘Brown Paper Bag’ or Peshay’s ‘Miles From Home’ for 2013...bad to the bone!
