차가운 전자음악이 자전적임과 동시에 개인의 감정을 고스란히 담아낼 수 있을까 라는 질문에서 출발하여 저 스스로의 트라우마를 음악으로 표현해보자는 결의를 가지게 되었습니다. 그렇게 Youth trauma라는 명의로 작곡활동을 시작했고, 베이퍼웨이브와 엠비언트 등의 영향을 받은 자전적인 음악들을 만들었습니다.

婴火(Youth trauma)라는 앨범은 그 중에서도 저의 가장 숨기고 싶은, 치부와도 같은 트라우마가 뭘까 라는 질문에서부터 시작했습니다. 그러면서도 저와 비슷한 형태의 경험을 한 사람들이 그것을 공유하며 공감할 수 있고, 저의 경험에 대해 이해하지 못하는 사람에게도 명료하게 다가올 수 있는 방법을 계속해서 모색했습니다. 그렇게 정해진 앨범의 컨셉과 테마는 남성 동성애자들이 향유하는 찜방 문화였습니다. 그것이 어린시절 저의 결핍과 트라우마와 많은 점들이 겹치고 이어진다는것을 발견하고 그것들을 공간 별로 대치시켜 명료화 하는 작업들을 거쳤습니다. 이 과정에서 가장 많은 영향을 받은 음악 장르는 베이퍼웨이브의 하위 장르 중 하나인 몰소프트입니다.

몰소프트는 현존하지 않는 가상의 쇼핑몰 같은 공간을 음악을 통해 재현하는 것을 목표로 하는 장르입니다. 각 공간마다 테마가 존재하며, 그것은 마치 청자로 하여금 자신도 그 경혐을 공유하는 듯한 착각을 줍니다. 저는 이 몰소프트의 개념을 차용하는 대신 좀 더 윤리적인 표현 방식을 모색했습니다. 자칫 찜방이라는 게이 커뮤니티의 일부가 공유하는 음지에 가까운 문화를 고스란히 재현하는 방식은 비윤리적인 방식이 될 수 있다고 느꼈기 때문입니다. 그렇기에 가장 개인적인 경험에서 출발하여, 존중과 격려의 태도로 앨범을 마무리하는 방식을 택하였습니다. 이 앨범은 저의 그런 고민들이 고스란히 담긴 앨범이며, 그 고민에 대한 저의 답변이 고스란히 새겨져 있는 앨범입니다.

Starting from the question of whether cold electronic music can capture individual emotions as well as autobiographical, I decided to express my own trauma through music. So I started composing under the name of Youth trauma, and made autobiographical music influenced by vaporwave and ambient.

The album 婴火(Youth trauma) started with the question of what is the trauma that I want to hide the most. At the same time, I continued to search for ways to share and empathize together with people who have had experiences similar to mine, and to reach out to people who do not understand my experiences clearly. The concept and theme of the album was the jjimbang(Gay bathhouse) culture enjoyed by gay people. I found many points of jjimbang culture that overlapped and connected with my lack of childhood and trauma, and I went through the work of clarification by replacing them space to space. The music genre that has influenced this process mostly was Mallsoft, one of the subgenres of Vaporwave.

Mallsoft is a genre that aims to reproduce a nonexistent virtual shopping mall-like space through music. Each space has a theme, and it gives the listener the illusion that he or she shares the experience. Instead of borrowing this Molesoft concept, I sought a more ethical way of expression. Because I felt that it would be unethical to reproduce the culture close to the shadows which shared by a part of the gay community (jjimbang culture). That's why I chose to end the album with respect and encouragement, and start with some personal experiences. This is an album that contains all of my worries, and my answers to those concerns.
