Historically, society has always needed one form of tonic or another. Tonics invigorate, restore, refresh and stimulate; much like this group of rising stars with their eyes on the prize. We’ve trawled some of the finest up & coming UK talent that the scene has to offer and hand-picked 6-tracks to kick start our brand new VA series of EPs in ‘Tonics: Batch 1’.

Kicking off proceedings and returning for her first release on the imprint since the ‘Summer Soul EP’ in 2018, we gladly welcome back London producer Dushi, with a jazzy number titled ‘Lost In The Waves’. We’re greeted with wonderfully wide, warm strings and an almost Middle Eastern soundscape in the intro, followed by an uplifting, orchestral-style drop - complete with progressive, jungle percussion. 

London native Lally is second up to the plate, with a sun drenched, rolling scorcher titled ‘All The Time’ - a palpable amen dream of tumbling sub, twinkling bells and lush, longing vocals. This track marks his first official release, and if this is anything to go off, we’ll be seeing a lot more of him! 

Dorset resident & new kid on the block Vektah undoubtedly delivers on the title with his track ‘Request’. The tune opens with luscious, swirling synths which fast descend into honks of incoming bass, jungle breaks and ragga vocals which will almost certainly have you shouting at your nearest DJ, demanding them to “run it”.

Makah’s ‘Crest’ rides in like a seasoned surfer, the intro rhythmically building tension with bubbling textures and washing synths amid swinging yet techy breaks, screeches and boundless bass. The second debut on the project, this accomplished first outing means this Cornwall-born composer is definitely one to watch for 2021.  

The third and final newcomer is Brighton boy Silloh and his debut ‘Strange Matter’. The track opens with cascading, shimmering chimes and a slight air of unease. The drop kicks like a mule, boasting roaring grunts of bass, high velocity drums; all of which are sure to evoke some downright evil expressions in the rave! 

Finally, Manchester’s own Motiv calls for last orders with the deceptively titled ‘Crave’ a deep, warm hug of a half time tune. Complete with wide, wobbling pads and clicking percussion wrapped in hypnotic vocals, you’ll no doubt long to hear this track, like some sort of uncontrollable urge.

So get your orders in for 6 doses of the finest effervescent d&b that money can buy, and raise a glass to the next batch of bubbling talent, pouring into all good stores on the 21st of May 2021.

We round off 2021 with the third & final instalment of our ‘Tonics’ series, a new initiative set to find and support rising drum & bass talent to bubble up to the surface. This last hurrah paints a decidedly international end to the triptych, featuring music from artists in Russia, Austria, Greece and Hungary alongside some British producers alike. Opening the floodgates for a new generation of d&b talent, we proudly present ‘Tonics: Batch 3’ which lands in all good stores on Friday the 10th of December. 

After first featuring on our ‘Soul Music 2020’ LP last year, Austrian producer Screamarts returns, providing a weighty opener with ‘Hide and Seek’. The intro sees a droning synth quickly paired with an ominous bassline, which is flanked by beefy drums. Further showcasing his ability to combine heinous synth patches with imaginative structuring, the initial drop provides somewhat of a false summit, which is quickly followed by euphoric female vocals, unbridled bass and a satisfyingly cheeky cowbell. 

Hungarian-based producer Nort marks his Soulvent debut with ‘Behind’ - a vocal-driven, wistful roller with a measured structure. The intro shows off high-octane splashes of amen and swathes of bass, while the drop is a slightly tamer affair with muted bass tones and a clicking-groove. The rolling beats of the drop are accompanied by reversed sweeps, cavernous chimes and guttural bass which are sure to make a splash at your next social function. 

Bournemouth badboy Vektah shows off his interpretation of Motiv’s ‘Crave’, which the keen-eyed amongst you will recognise from the first ‘Tonics’ EP back in May this year. A delightful jungle reimagining, the bubbling effervescence of the original blends beautifully with playful drum work and wheel-up worthy womps of bass on offer.
 
Newcomers Skoel & Lök represent for Russia with the frenetic ‘Fractal’ which continues the darker theme present across the EP. Haunting vocals usher in a filtered break, a pulsing arpeggio and all manner of debauching bass tones. Make no mistake, these syncopated rhythms and gritty sonics are set to charge up dances from the Kremlin to Kilburn!

English producers Jolliffe & Natural Forces have teamed up for the seasonally titled ‘Winter Sails’. This murky, driving roller blends all manner of screwface-inducing elements. Warped, eerie vocals, dissonant pads and fleeting, twinkling synths gel to create a track that we can see damaging dimly-lit dancefloors come December. 

Finally, Requiem puts Greece on the map with the quirkily titled ‘Saturn On The Left’ which provides a more laid-back, softer edge to the EP and rounds out the release. The gradual intro combines drawn-out pads and melodic tones, which blend seamlessly with techy drum breaks, pulsating arpeggio and growling bass. This astronomical closing track provides just the right blend of musicality and energy to see the ‘Tonics’ series out in true style.

Hadley Ft Sahala 'I Don't Know You' [Balearic Breaks]

Bailey Greer and Josh Croft are names which should be commonplace in the mind of any self-respecting Souvent Records fan. The pair released their accomplished debut album ‘Voyager’ in 2020 and have since continued to perfect their own brand of smooth, sultry liquid collaborating with artists like Etherwood and Ruth Royall in 2021 as part of their ‘Cloud Nine’ EP. Their unique approach to d&b is further showcased in this gorgeous 2-track single, teaming up with the Jedi-wordsmith that is Visionobi on ‘Silhouette’ and showing off some synth-wizardry on ‘Android Funk’. 

‘Silhouette (feat. Visionobi)’ begins its life with soft harmonic textures and swirling pads, giving way to a rising bassline and rolling drums. Visionobi’s measured phrasing, calm delivery and reflective lyrics allow space for his words to paint the outline of rich mental images in the frontal cortex. These poignant verses sit alongside the bubbling arpeggio and ethereal vocal touches  that serve as a perfect call-and-response, allowing the stanzas to complete the picture. 

‘Android Funk’ on the other hand is classic In:Most, showcasing their love for intricate synth patterns and soundscapes. The dreamlike intro gives way to cascading, reverb-soaked tones, delicate vocal textures and a swelling bassline. On the drop, we’re treated to punchy drums and flavoursome flourishes across the board, with a switch-up mid-way through that will bring a wry smile and skank to even the moodiest of dances.  

Tying up this neat little package is the long-awaited release of Dustkey’s competition winning remix of ‘Glimmer (feat. Lucy Kitchen)’, taken from ‘Voyager’. This delightful reimagining blends soaring pianos with Lucy’s stunning vocal, heavy-hitting drums and warming, expansive bass - perfectly reframing the twinkle of the original!

For this single, Adrian Andrei floats roughly between two musical worlds – and he does this with his two monikers Freqax for Drum and Bass and Freqkid for more experimental music.

Let’s start with the Drum and Bass track. “Giver” is a progressive sci-fi track with several sounds that seem to run in opposite directions, which in a very clever way create a compelling groove. The strings synth also gives the tune a floating character.

In “Lucid Dream” he naturally throttles the BPM as Freqkid, but not the intensity of the bass drum, which progresses stoically here. A melancholy melody joins the trippy basic character of the song, which could serve as a suitable soundtrack for a farewell to whatever. Definitely not from Adrian. You will soon hear him again on UTM Records!

Mit großer Ehrfurcht und vor allem viel Freude dürfen wir deshalb eine Single präsentieren, die aus seiner Feder stammt. Sascha ist seit reichlich drei Dekaden im guten Namen von Drum and Bass unterwegs und wenn einer grundsätzlich die Frage stellen kann: „What’s this all about?“, dann er! Entsprechend ist der Track dann auch tatsächlich auf das reduziert, worauf es ankommt: zupackende Synths, ummantelt von zeitgemäßem Drumming inklusive pitched Snare; dazu eine leichte Melo und thematische Vocalsnippets im Breakdown. Fertig ist ein proper Stepper!

„Inside The Rabbit Hole“ (feat. Trinity) schneidet auf der Suche nach dem weißen Hasen mit der Synth-Machete eine großzügige Schneise durch den dunklen Wald und bleibt dabei stets auf der Hut vor Gefahren von allen Seiten.

Crate Classics are a Grammy-nominated duo composed of London-based musicians Jamie Rodigan and Aaron Horn, who’ve been making music together under the moniker since 2019. The pair’s multi-faceted, genre-spanning approach to releasing music in this day and age is refreshing to say the least! Ghost Mode’ is their latest collaboration with fellow Londoner & songstress Catching Cairo, who was recently heralded as Rebecca Judd’s ‘Ascending Artist’ for 2022. This marks the first collaboration between the trio.

 “I met Cairo purely by chance in Peckham outside a bar,” Jamie told us. “We have a mutual friend who introduced us. We’re big fans of her work so when the chance meeting happened, we jumped at the opportunity to work with her. It’s a magical track and it’s been really fun working together on the project”. 

‘Ghost Mode’ gets going with chopped & screwed vocals coupled with luscious keys and pitched-up sub-bass.  This is followed by a swinging, staccato break and Catching Cairo’s haunting tones. The wistful delivery perfectly matches the disappointment of our narrator who is sick of being left out in the cold again.

Hospital Record’s soulful drum and bass aficionado Makoto is back with his seventh studio album, ‘Motion Of Change’. Following on from his popular ‘What You Need’ EP and the vibrant ‘Maybe We’ll Make It (feat. Mark Force and Archaik)’, his new album brings a blend of jungle, jazz, funk, and soul with Makoto’s signature euphoric touch. With over twenty years in the game, Makoto’s immaculate discography and signature sound have seen the Japanese born producer pave the way for liquid drum & bass all the way into 2022. A true pioneer of his craft since his Good Looking Records days of the late 90s, he’s since racked up an impressive amount of releases on Innerground, UKF, Liquid V and his very own imprint Human Elements.

Soulful liquid sensation Hugh Hardie is back with his brand new ‘Inhale Exhale’ EP on Hospital Records. Soulful drum & bass connoisseur and Goldfat Records head honcho, Mitekiss is ready to make his mark with his highly anticipated second studio album ‘Bolivian Hotel Bistro’, on Hospital Records. The dreamlike ‘Sophie’s Tale’ will send listeners into a deep state of liquid lusciousness. Expect jungle-esque breakbeats, heartfelt piano chords and a subtle but dangerous 808.

Switching up the style, album title track ‘Bolivian Hotel Bistro’ sees Mitekiss draw for a wildcard as he ventures into the higher tempo realms of house and techno. Made up of enticing pads and techno-inspired arps, there isn’t a sound that Mitekiss can’t conquer.

‘Droplets’ warms the soul with playful chimes that send tingles down the spine, skippy drumwork and a jazz-inspired bassline. Mirroring the sounds of raindrops, Mitekiss takes us on a sombre sonic journey accompanied by Leeds-based vocalist B-ahwe’s enticing harmonies.

Other notable moments on the album include his garage infused banger ‘Flep’, orchestral breakbeat masterpiece ‘Falling In Reverse (feat. gürl)’, as well as previously released singles ‘Mortala (feat. Emiko & Duskee)’ and ‘Seventeen (feat. Pixie Cola)’.

Their soul-stirring refix sits at a more familiar tempo - supercharging the beauty of the first iteration with soaring pads, rolling fills and surging bass.

Jewgeni Belokon aka Fixrow ist ein Rohdiamant, der inzwischen in der russischen Hauptstadt lebt. Fixrow wurde vom Klang des Drum and Bass angezogen, als er 2011 Pendulum als Band hörte und später das DnB-Genre als solches entdeckte. Im Laufe der Zeit, als er mehr Tracks hörte, bemerkte er, dass es viele coole Musiker in diesem Genre aus Russland gibt. Das inspirierte ihn und er beschloss, sich selbst in dem Geschäft auszuprobieren. Fixrow mag die Atmosphäre in den Tracks und versucht, sie in seinen Arbeiten selbst zu erschaffen – wenngleich das Konzept von „Atmosphäre“ für jeden ein anderes ist. Beim Kreieren seiner Kompositionen legt er sie nicht in erster Linie für den Dancefloor an, sondern eher für unterwegs auf Kopfhörern. Er achtet mehr darauf, Pads dafür zu erstellen. Nachdem unsere Scouting-Abteilung Fixrow ausfindig gemacht hat, sind wir deshalb in besonderem Maße stolz auf „Dark Tales“, denn es ist erst das zweite Release überhaupt, was unter dem Pseudonym Fixrow erscheint. Wie von ihm selbst beschrieben, erwarten euch drei Tracks mit absolut verdichteter Atmosphäre. Mal düster und klaustrophobisch wie beim Titeltrack „Dark Tales“; mal aggressiv und mit tödlich perkussiven Stabs versehen, wie in „Exodus“ oder schaurig und verfolgend wie in „See Something“ – Fixrow avanciert für dieses Release zum Erzähler von drei individuell dunklen Geschichten voller Geheimnisse. Auf auf, liebe Hörer, geht mal schön auf Entdeckertour!

Yevgeny Belokon aka Fixrow is a rough diamond who now lives in the Russian capital. Fixrow was drawn to the sound of Drum and Bass when he heard Pendulum as a band in 2011 and later discovered the DnB genre as such. Over time, as he listened to more tracks, he noticed that there are a lot of cool musicians in this genre from Russia. This inspired him and he decided to try the business himself. Fixrow likes the atmosphere in the tracks and tries to create it himself in his work - although the concept of "atmosphere" is different for everyone. When creating his compositions, he does not primarily create them for the dance floor, but rather for on the go with headphones. He pays more attention to creating pads for it. After our scouting department found Fixrow, we are particularly proud of "Dark Tales", because it is only the second release ever, which appears under the pseudonym Fixrow. As he himself described, you can expect three tracks with an absolutely condensed atmosphere. Sometimes gloomy and claustrophobic like the title track "Dark Tales"; aggressive and armed with deadly percussive stabs, as in "Exodus" or spooky and haunting as in "See Something" - Fixrow becomes the narrator of three individually dark tales full of mysteries for this release. Für unser nächstes Release gehen wir richtig in die Vollen und haben mit einer Single von L 33 einen, wenn nicht gar DEN Vertreter für Drum and Bass aus Bulgarien am Start. Dayan hat mit seinen Produktionen jedenfalls maßgeblich dazu beigetragen, den Balkanstaat auf die DnB-Landkarte zu bringen. Seine progressiven Neurofunk-Tracks fanden bereits ihren Weg auf Labels wie Ram, Eatbrain oder Titan. Und auch für UTM-Records harpuniert er uns hier mit zwei echten Torpedos, gegen die kein Wasser zu trüb sein kann. Für „Secret Weapon“ können wir diese Metapher getrost aufgreifen, denn wenn diese Waffe dropt, ist ein Entrinnen unmöglich. „Rock´n´Stone“ taucht noch eine Schicht tiefer und zieht mit seiner Urgewalt derbe Risse in Fels und Stein. Eine Single mit zwei hochgradig progressiven Tracks, die überdies in Sachen Mixdown und Mastering on point sind!

For our next release we’re going to the fullest and with a single by L 33 we have one, if not THE representative for Drum and Bass from Bulgaria ready here. In any case, Dayan’s productions made a significant contribution to putting the Balkan state on the DnB map. His progressive Neurofunk tracks have already found their way onto labels like Ram, Eatbrain and Titan. And also for UTM-Records he harpoons us with two real torpedoes, against which no water can be too murky. We can confidently use this metaphor for “Secret Weapon” because when this weapon drops, there is no escape. “Rock’n’Stone” dives one layer deeper and pulls rough cracks in rock and stone with its elemental force. A single with two highly progressive tracks, which are also on point in terms of mixdown and mastering!

The wait is over - PB4 is here. Perhaps one of the most revered album series in drum & bass is back with a vengeance, and some are saying it maybe the best yet. 

If you weren’t already aware Ivy Lab are a very talented trio consisting of Sabre, Stray and Halogenix, The guys collaborated with Hydro for 'Make It Clear' and all four minds can be clearly heard in the track, it doesn't end there however - The vocal duet of Mr Carter and Miss Annika trade phrases to great effect. Make it clear is a slice of soul that really resonates with the listener.

"Here you go, the first VA release on my label Propaganda Records called ‘Zbirka’, made, in the best traditions of wax, on 180 gram inside-out black vinyl in a gold sleeve. 
On it are five different but equally solid tracks worthy of your attention. ‘Tooman’ is typical of Ukrainian Yate’s minimal and groovy style. ‘The Story Behind Everything’ is a quality minimal track produced by a very talented Romanian producer who decided to take the alias nSd. In the end it's not that important to know WHO it is because his music speaks for itself. ‘Machinebag’ is made by Dani Casarano and Felipe Valenzuela; this one is techno for the dance floor. ‘Safari’ by me is that rare moment when I am interested to make something in the studio. I was very much supported to bring this track out by Nikolay Bogomolov, actually a young drum and bass producer from the Ukrainian city Dniepropetrovsk. A special thing about the track is its mix of techno and bass sounds. And finally, a key track of this release, the one so many of you were waiting for, ‘Journeyman’ produced by the previously unknown and youngest music maker on my label, Matteo Papachiolli, featuring the deep, sexy voice of Rich Medina.
