Piano 1: Yamaha Disklavier Pro (reproducing  2: Bösendorfer Imperial SE (reproducing technology by Wayne Stahnke)

Performance data for the pianos was programmed by Anatoly Larkin.  Translation algorithms were used to convert the MIDI-based performance score into usable key and pedal data.
The 2 pianos were tuned and voiced by piano technician Marc Wienert. This performance was recorded in Greywalls Studio Hall by Bernie Grunwald for the PwO Festival (Pianos without Organs) in Raleigh, NC.

According to the Torah, Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for a stew of lentils.
This musical interplay between an original text and theme, and two variations is pregnant with message. The original text is comprised of quotes and references from different times covering the entire history span of human kind: from the bible and folk stories to Ayn Rand, Martin Heidegger and others. The two variations, on the other hand, are built with different levels of Markov Chains with grammatical conditions. The first variation is eerily reminiscent of a typical oracle speech. The second one, however, is obsessively hammering the same points. Only the last text, which is the original one, is intelligible and tells the story behind the rants and prophecies. The music and the text echo each other in terms of spirit.

The piece was composed with the use of different algorithms,  on “AC Toolbox” by Paul Berg (Institution of Sonology, the Royal Conservatory of the Hague), intertwined with  Industrial sounds and  live electronics

The Unrealtime Combat EP will be out in limited white vinyl with a special design by Vincent Oliver in Spring 2019 (Migro MIG013).

Composer, improvisor and producer Panos Ghikas is a member of The Chap, who also runs the Migro label. Matt Wright is a composer, turntablist and co-founder of Trance Map with Evan Parker. “Steppe Entrecôte” is an edited extract taken from the live recording Unrealtime Combat, which the duo describe as “an agglutination of divergent strategies for sampling and non-linear performance (turntables versus interface mapping)”.
