A friend told me about the "Hans Zimmer Wants you" contest. Very Exciting stuff.

Then i noticed, my country is not listed  in the countries admited in the rules...so my dream suddenly collapses.

anyway i have a good time creating this theme, having as a reference the Hans zimmer one. I only use the Vocal Stem.

My goals : have a great dynamic range. from very subtle passages to very powerful ones. Have variety of timbres and textures and respect the Hans zimmer melodic idea.

Sascha used the following presets and features in his track:
- First Theme appearance with solo Tuba and Trombone above - both legato, supported by solo Trumpet in the second half of the melody
- Intermezzo with the 2 solo Horns and low Brass Dynamics
- Second time, theme played by Tuba Ensemble and Trumpet Ensemble in Legato
- The Storm is performed by the French Horn Ensemble True Legato articulation layered with Staccatos for more Impact on the Note Attacks. Underneath the Trombone Ensemble plays the Harmonies and Accents.
- The last Theme is played by the legato solo Trumpet together with the Trombone.
- The Coda is played by all the Solo Instrument Sustains, starting with Trombone and Tuba, later joined by the 2 Horns and the Trumpet

He also used the Soundiron Olympus Symphonic Choir, Apocalypse Percussion Ensemble, Circle Bells and Montclarion Hall Grand Piano libraries in his mix.

Sascha Knorr - The Mountain Pass (L) - SSBrass Bundle

I was just practicing tonight and felt like recording one of the pieces.  Beethoven's Sonata No. 14 in C# minor Op. 27 No. 2, or otherwise known as 'Quasi una fantasia' or the 'Moonlight Sonata'.  I recorded this on a Steinway D and mastered it in my mastering studio www.alpinemastering.com

Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata (Glenn playing on a Steinway D)

I'm always looking to shrink the size and weight of my rig. I just love carrying the minimum amount of equipment!  I did this test to see how small I could go with microphone separation without sacrificing quality. All configurations were Clippy EM172 stereo pair to Sony PCM-A10.

My conclusion is that AB40cm rig with simple Rycote lav wind protection gives me a great sound with a very small and light footprint but not great wind protection. The quasi-binaural rig gives perhaps a more accurate stereo field with the advantage of excellent wind protection (it is housed in the equivalent of a blimp with proper windjammer). To get better wind protection for the AB40cm rig would require a massive and heavy (by my standards) blimp.

1. AB20cm - narrow, too narrow...
2. AB30cm - getting wider, pretty nice...
3. AB40cm - wider still but nice balance of width and centre-image?
4. AB60cm - very wide but hole in the middle?
5. Quasi-binaural (20cm spacing with foam cylinder baffles) - improved placement of sounds in the stereo field?
