Known for his melancholic, dark and mental atmospheres, we are joined by the Lyon-based artist Umwelt this week. The self-proclaimed analogue freak, vinyl-collector and dancefloor-veteran boasts an impressive discography of over fourty releases to date, making him one of France's most prolific electronic music producers. His modus operandi is wild and aimed straight at the dancefloor, while still being open to experimentation along the way. With his labels Rave or Die and Newflesh Records, Umwelt has secured himself a spot at the forefront of today's rave scene, delivering terrifying and exciting new sounds to the masses. This mix exhibits the dark, intense energy Umwelt has become known for.

Italian-born, Prague-based DJ Ester is sort of young blood to the local scene. Her enthusiasm for electronic music brought her to play her first gig in 2018. Since then, she invites listeners along a long, dark, escalating journey that continues to evolve in her sets. Ester is mainly inspired by the sounds of EBM, industrial, 
darkwave, and post-punk, but there are no borders in her music selection. She remains in her element when playing in other areas such as dark-ambient and oriental that fill the gaps of silence in her daily life.

June 2022 marked the exact 30th anniversary of German/Belgian Patrick Stevens (°1973) project hypnoskull which was started in 1992, rooted in the aftermath of the first wave of industrial music but as well in the humid warehouses of the early techno scene of the nineties and the underground stages of harsh noise. One of the pioneers to combine industrial music with techno resulting in legendary releases on the German cult-label ant-zen, numerous live performances all over the globe in iconic clubs like CBGB’s New York, Rex Paris, KitKat Berlin and cities like Moscow, Beirut, Los Angeles, Chicago and so on, this one-man project, sometimes expanded with artists and performers from contemporary dance, theatre and film, is as unpredictable as the ideology behind it: a lo-fi, harsh, monotone assault of political thoughts, subversive rants and sheer emotional outbursts towards a society first questioned, deconstructed, destroyed and left behind without a solution or a better plan. Music as a weapon and as well as a tool for self-dissection. In recent years, hypnoskull got acknowledged by lots of producers and artists in the field of industrial techno, resulting in releases, collaborations, remix work and production for many of the big players in this genre.

For this podcast, hypnoskull selected a number of brandnew tracks and releases as well as some forgotten old gems. Crossing every possible border of whatever written and unwritten rules of whatsoever ‘scene’ or subculture, this mix fiercely shows what it is still about for Patrick Stevens, after 30 years of producing, playing live and deejaying, as he states himself: ‘I get claustrophobic when I witness how the techno scene became lately. Techno became the soundtrack provided by good looking boys and girls who strive to make their business plans come true, in clubs that degraded themselves from laboratories to corporate boxes of emptiness. That’s why I selected both some radical memories from tracks and styles which were once as well played in the clubs, and some brilliant music by new, young and emerging producers. Belgium is as well coming back from a low, especially in the city of Brussels, where plenty of astonishing producers be them Belgians or expats gather and create a new wave of exciting electronic music as we speak. That was a long time ago. They’re in here as well by the likes of Maltash, Elaina Vierce and Raum. And Paris as well, check Age of hate, ZNZL, Prophän,… There’s a great connection between both cities also. I truly believe great stuff will happen again very soon.’

Ontal is the collaborative project between Boris Brenecki and Darko Kolar, both hailing from Serbia. 
Focusing on the bleakest, blackest apocalyptic Techno and grinding mechanoid rhythms, calm joyful rapture over the sound of burning cities and scorched wastelands. 
Formed in november 2011 and influenced by numerous music genres, their sound can be described as an uncompromising, hard and intense assault. 
Breathing new life in the industrial strains of Techno and the darker realms of the dancefloor and mind.

Crystal Geometry is the latest project from underground electronic music veteran, Maxime Fabre. Inspired by Post-Punk, Black Metal and Industrial, the French producer and live artist has returned to his roots, a crossover between the warehouse rave scene of the 90’s and industrial music, mixing EBM influences with hardcore Techno.
Centered around an ever-growing modular system, the project is based upon live improvisation with dedicated hardware, relentless hard beats and haunting soundscapes. Recognition of the project’s output has continued to penetrate the underground circuit, with a growing catalogue of high-impact productions, released across a number of labels; SARIN’s, X-IMG, Parisian imprint RND. Records, Spain’s Darkwave synth driven, Oraculo Records, Marseille-based Caisson Gauche and a debut album on Berlin-based Noise and Industrial label, AREA Z.
