The Looking Glass Movement 1

Written for solo prepared piano, this is my version of the Cuban guaguanco rhythm, from the piece "Three Latin Rhythms". It was recorded for my album "More than my old piano" as well as Gabriella Smart's album "Chinese Whispers". It was the theme music for ABC Classic FM's coverage of the ICSM World Music Days in Sydney 2010. Gabriella Smart also recorded this for Move Records.

About the piece: Skylarkers was commissioned by Kathleen Kemp, assistant principal cellist in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. 

The piece is scored for one 5.0 octave marimba and five cellists, (one of the cellists also plays cajon). Sheet music for Skylarkers is available at IvanDrums.com

SoundStruck Percussion is a contemporary group that was formed to create new chamber music works for modern percussion, and to highlight the versatility, excitement and importance of percussion within the arts.

Formed in 2011 while studying at the Queensland Conservatorium, Australia, the ensemble consists of Tsoof Baras, Lachlan Hawkins, Jeremy Sandroussi and Jamee Seeto. The group writes their own original music and arrangements and their performance focus is to involve the audience and provide an interesting spin on percussion music. They can perform anything from body percussion to recycled materials, drum kits to marimbas, even just on desks.

SoundStruck Percussion is very active within the local music scene, regularly performing in both traditional and corporate settings. The group’s recent performances include the inaugural Brisbane International Youth Music Festival, CROSSBOWS Festival, Mayfest, QYO Chamber Music Series as well as regular showcase concerts at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. In 2012, SoundStruck Percussion also featured as soloists in the Myer Christmas Parade & Pantomime Media Launch as well as the IGA Lord Mayorʼs Carols in the City.

With influences ranging from STOMP, The Blue Man Group to Michael Jackson, the vision of the group is to thrill audiences with a fresh and entertaining approach to performing instrumental music. This means creating and performing original music, novelty pieces, mallet and drumming pieces, recital repertoire, and popular music arrangements as well as celebrating the innovative work of upcoming Brisbane composers through collaboration.

In 2013, SoundStruck Percussion is very excited to continue presenting solo concerts at the Queensland Conservatorium, as well as recording new compositions and arrangements.
