Ewan Rill returns to Deersky’s Soundteller Records with a three track showcase ‘Option Exist’. The Russian artist and Sever Records boss has been a mainstay of the progressive house underground since first appearing in 2011 with a release on Balkan Connection. Now a decade later he stands as one of the genre’s most prolific artists, with a discography of more than 1250 credits and appearances on esteemed imprints such as Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden. It’s been just over four years since Ewan’s last Soundteller appearance and he makes the most of his return with three powerful tracks.

Continuing to stretch his creative wings, Ewan goes a touch more melodic than we’re used to on the lead track ‘Option Exist’. A buoyant, bubbly groove sets stage early on as lively rhythms and bouncy percussion bring an energetic vibe across the first act. Gentle melodic phrasing then emerges, foreshadowing an even more poignant break. Warm and a touch romantic, the centrepiece is highly memorable, with it’s trance-inducing powers effortlessly seguing into a playfully cosmic finale.

The second selection ‘Long Snake Road’ ups the pace a bit with a tougher more heady vibe. A buzzing groove immediately grabs your attention, while clever rhythms and trippy effects provide a clean transition into a section of emotive chord changes. The mood changes once more as the break goes from something quite esoteric and otherworldly back to a more traditional melodic approach as the groove carries the colourful journey home.

Adding further depth to the release are the quirky qualities of the third and final selection ‘Geartbel’. Clever beat patterns and a timeless electronic sense fuel this one early, eventually leading to an expansive and highly emotive break. Warm pads and nicely timed chord changes bring a bright, heartfelt quality to the interlude, as it melts back down to a groovy drop and glowing finale. Fresh sounding stuff from Ewan which caps off a very well rounded EP for the veteran producer. Highly recommended.

Through Meanwhile Horizons, the Australian duo are set to focus on a more melodic and considered dancefloor sound with a liberal smattering of downtempo and chillout music.

A debut release sees a stunning quartet of artists take centre stage on “Beyond the Horizon”. Opening the EP, Maddy Hughes once again takes his renowned and revered Funkform moniker into the limelight with “Cosmosis”. Beautifully imagined, delicate textures and sonic waves wash over each other in delicious harmony as subtle motifs emerge out the aural collage. Building in delicate intensity, a chunky beat and airy percussive groove sit atop the 9-minute piece as the second half opens up with glittering arpeggio and an immaculate wall of sound.

Co-label founder, Matter, once again delivers another stunning performance with “Air Sand”, the first single from his forthcoming debut album on Meanwhile Horizons. A veteran of countless high-profile releases on the likes of Anjunadeep, Balance and Proton Music, the Australian provides a powerful backdrop of thumping beat and ticking percussive overlay as a rolling groove creates the foundation for an evolving array of sounds to blossom in the 10-minute sonic excursion. Always keeping the dancefloor in mind, a club-friendly middle section is a progressive house masterclass of layered melodies, vocal breaths and hypnotic plucked motif. Sandwiched either side by waves of atmosphere and texture, “Air Sand” is another Matter gem.

A stalwart of the progressive house scene for 8 years, Rafa’EL is another artist with a rich seam of high-profile releases to his name for the likes of Balkan Connection, Univack and Electronic Tree. Now making his mark on Meanwhile Horizons, “Julie” is a fluid, progressive house jewel that glitters through use of sparkling arpeggio and sumptuous free-flowing pads. The most recognisable club-friendly track of the EP, a strong rhythmic framework anchors the track while synthesised vocal sounds pitch delicately against layers of counterpoint motifs to create a spell-binding debut.

Debuting his new ambient and downtempo soubriquet, Meanwhile supremo, GMJ presents Qiam on the final track of the release. Already an iconic name within the underground dance fraternity with scores of best-selling releases on blue-chip imprints, “Dadradah” is a gloriously imagined track brim full of emotion and atmosphere. Within a beatless structure, thickly textured pads dominate as an emotionally charged bassline sustains throughout. Building to a spine-tingling crescendo over its 6-minute duration, a filtered arpeggio sequence opens up as delicate string motifs had further intensity in the final stages.

Stretching out into a golden dawn, “Beyond the Horizon” showcases an increasingly bright new future.

'A legendary name, Filip Kaczmarek has continued to innovate and capture the imagination of the underground dance music fraternity with his Kobana production soubriquet. Evergreen and ever-impressive, his work for Proton Music over a decade and half-century of production credits saw a career highlight in 2014's full-length album, "The Riddle". 2015's "Freefall" and 2016's "Boyhood" EPs continued the flow of original music as the Polish artist now returns with his "Light Flooding" EP. The title track showcases a glorious array of hypnotic textures and sound design wrapped around a hefty beat and staccato bassline. Building through a rising progression of pads and white noise effects, the second half erupts into a pulsating wave of sounds that reintroduces melodic elements and subtly cadenced guitar samples to create a driving finale. The partner track sees the smoother deep house vibe of "Focus" evolve through grooved bass pattern, ticking hats and deep kick. Simultaneously, an LFO'd synth rips through the mid-range in smooth synchrony as rich pads add depth. Hitting its stride in the second half a repetitive vocal cut once again features heavily in the dynamic denouement as the track roll forward apace.'

After releases on labels such as SINCOPAT, ICONYC, Perspectives Digital or Beat Boutique were happy to have two smashing Original tracks rolling down on our floor. Title track "Sci-Fied" comes along with a lot of energy and keeps the dark mood all over the full distance with a spacy vocoder highlight. "In My Head" with the beautiful vocals of Canadian artist Jessica Zese is the second track, having a mystic atmosphere and keeps the focus on a fabolous bassline.
