If you were to think say that Flamingo Pier have become stalwarts of Soundway Records as of late, then you would be absolutely correct. The New Zealand based collective of Dominic, Brad and Luke have developed a blossoming relationship with the label  since the release of their self titled ‘Flamingo EP’ back in 2019. Fast-forward 2 years; having navigated through the midst of a global pandemic, the trio are now set to release their debut album ‘Flamingo Pier LP’. This long-play encapsulates the unique sound that the trio have established over the past few years that has come to incorporate elements of funk, disco, and jazz, all built around Afro-centric percussive elements.



Deeper Soul is somewhat of a departure from the upfront, cut-loose dancefloor vibe that harnesses the majority of this album. Staying true to its name; ‘Deeper Soul’ has its foundations in a substantially more downtempo, stripped back approach. It’s psychedelic influence hides in plain sight, organic afro-inspired percussion underpinning the calming synth top-lines that gently meander throughout courtesy of an abundance of reverb, delay, and modulation; whilst the hypnotic, funk-laden baseline injects a feeling of nostalgia that supplements the overall groove in beautiful fashion. It’s hard to pull yourself out of the time-warp of yesteryear after listening to this one!

Modes continues the forward thinking percussive jazz and afro-inspired house music soundscapes explored on Dyne's recent album Teal, which garnered acclaim from peers and fans alike - including Late Night Tales, Toddla T, Ransom Note, and BBC6 Music presenters.

His trademark slick production can be relied upon once more, as well as the music's insistent rhythmic drive and intensity. Modes employs some of New Zealand's most well known and iconic vocalists, in addition to many new rising stars. Frequent collaborators Lord Echo, Ladi 6 and Mara TK (Electric Wire Hustle) return, alongside soul legends Dallas Tamaira aka Joe Dukie (Fat Freddys Drop), Che Fu and Troy Kingi.

Premiere: Julien Dyne 'Be Real'

This four track EP, limited to 1500 copies, sees Soundway head to Trindad for 4 orginal 1950s instrumental calypso recording from Cyril Diaz who became renowned for the “rich and smooth tone” of his tenor sax playing. On this EP Soundway presents four of his tracks including the traditional Cuban standard ‘Tabu’, the Haitian inspired ‘Voodoo’ and ‘Serenal’ with it’s alternate version ‘Chive Soup Merengie’ both derived from Trinidad’s Latin music tradition; parang.

On today’s edition of the show, Darone invites @norsicaa. Norsicaa, aka Alice, is an Australian-Malaysian DJ and record collector based in London. She has contributed mixes to The Vinyl Factory, Stamp The Wax and Phonica Records, as well as performed live on Boiler Room. On top of this she also runs a Malaysian supper club called Eastern Platters, and is general manager of the independent record label Soundway Records, which recently celebrated its 21st anniversary.

Tracks below are all from Asia (South / East / South-East) – about half are from Indonesia and the rest from Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Pakistan, India and South Korea.

Bangers from around the globe. Dar Disku launched with a question: how to channel heritage into dance floor elation? Well, when your name translates to 'home of the disco,' the brief feels pretty self-explanatory.

In the first few years, that meant crafting edits of Khaliji hi-NRG and Bollywood soundtracks to fit contemporary 'crates. They took off as DJs through a run of radio and parties in the UK—where they currently reside—flexing deep finds from across the SWANA region. Their vibrant debut album, out in September on Soundway, furthers the mission.

True to form, their RA Podcast is stuffed with heaters from all over the map: Algeria, India, Chile, Jordan, Australia, Turkey, Libya and Morocco get a look-in, as well as a few staple acts that betray the kind of high-wattage European festivals the duo increasingly frequent. It's not hard to see why—this mix is 90 minutes of sunshine.

OpenLab Selectors [with Paula Juana]

Reuben Vaun Smith hadn't intended to be a musician; he was supposed to be on the football pitch. As a young prodigy, he was signed to the Leeds United youth team as a rising talent and by 16 he'd been spotted and signed by Sevilla in Spain. But the dream was over before it really began.

At 18 he suffered a life-changing knee injury, catastrophically stopping his career in its tracks for good. With no back-up plan, Smith moved back to Yorkshire and contemplated what to do next. 

Not long after, his grandfather bought him a MIDI keyboard - and Smith retreated to the shed at the end of his garden and started to teach himself music production.

In a world full of sonic musical snobbery, a world full of the hierarchy of expensive hardware and software - Smith delivers a unique raw, live and improvised style using an inexpensive keyboard and a computer program given to him on a memory stick by one of the punters in his dad's pub. 

He joins a long list of musicians that were somehow detached from the rule-bound world of the music industry - making music as much for themselves as for anyone else. With no formal musical education and not over influenced by mixing techniques that may have slowed his raw stream of musical consciousness, here we present some of his earliest musical sketches and heartfelt outpourings.

Drawing on the Balearic style of the 1980s, Smith invokes the sound of warm nights, lapping oceans and a young man, in a Yorkshire shed, wrapping himself in layers of musical warmth and shimmering sonic landscapes. The wonderful world of Reuben Vaun Smith.

We were joined by ELTB friends Frankie Francis, Norsicaa and Mr Redley as we ran through 6.5 hours of musical gold, back 2 back. Starting slow as usual and then building up as the restaurant cleared and the dance floor began, expect sounds of ambiant, dub, leftfield disco, afrobeat, latin grooves, soul, funk, jazz and so so much more.
