I Remember one  Easter morning that turned into a battle of colors. Before I moved in with my Dad, my sense of home became Lulu, my neighbor from the 4th floor. The first thing I learned how to cook was eggs and mayonnaise sandwiches. I don’t ever remember feeling hunger because I always found a way. Looking back if it wasn’t for Lulu’s Mother I probably would have never ate on the days Mama didn’t have me. Easter is about food and Jesus but as any Black Caribbean family it also meant a celebration with glazed ham, rice, and maybe some pork, Lulu is half Puerto rican like me. Familiar foods like fried drumsticks and white  rice were meals her mother prepared for us. Her Mom invited me over for Easter dinner. I always went downstairs. I didn't think much of it. “I’m going to Lulu’s for dinner”  La Loca got up from the couch grabbing the gold curtain rod. I step into my sneakers as I turn  around and get pushed into the door. 
“You aren’t going anywhere, I don't want you around that Black bitch” she pressed her elbow against my chest. My little hands were barely able to reach her face to fight back. I start crying in rage. “Why can't I go?” I could see the blackness in her eyes. Always like she isn’t here. And she didn’t see that I was either. Why did I always make her so upset? Questioning if I did anything wrong questioning my own innocence at 9. I unlock the door with the release of my Mothers hands. Her hand shutting the door. “You are not going i said” she yells hitting the curtain rod straight on to my nose, the flow of blood rushed out onto the floor. .Her rage met my loss of my innocence. The darkness of my childhood lingering in the wind.
