An epic strings mix fit for a film, recorded in Chicago.

Theory Therapy 34 is a highly immersive strings recording pieced together by Concave Reflection aka Tommy Paslaski, one-third of Chicago-based group Purelink. The mix feels like a soundtrack to an on-screen drama, not just because strings are commonly used in films or that they can capture specific emotions so well, but also in the way that each of Tommy’s selections feel like subtle thematic shifts. 

As you may already know, we’re releasing an 11-track tape with Tommy on March 4th. It’s our first physical release as a label and we can’t wait for you to hear the full album. In the meantime, we feel like this mix and interview will more than suffice. Enjoy.

Without your mother considers the nature of absence within maternal relationships. An absence is a state or condition in which something expected, wanted or looked for is not present. We begin our lives looking for our mothers. Do we ever stop looking for them and do they ever stop looking for us? As we grow, we make attempts to detach ourselves in order to become independent and live adult lives. What remnants of this relationship that defines our early lives remain in the distance of adulthood? Amid absence, our memories morph, the details become duller and distorted over time and we’re left with a summarised version of what might have happened, similar to a photograph. Some edges will blur and some will sharpen until those are the only parts we can remember.

Joe is seemingly very busy at present, filling his time running local label JPEG Artefacts, producing and releasing under the guise of "Other Joe" and fast becoming a highly sought after sound engineer for mixing and mastering in Melbourne - having contributed his skills to a growing back catalogue of stunning releases this year.

Joe's enviable mix of technical skill, a background in classical music and all round ear for what's good converges to create some of the most intriguing music i've come across in contemporary times. Other Joe's productions are supremely textural, somewhat experimental, and to me, very emotive ambient works. These characteristics especially evident in the track 'I was that book' released with great acclaim on his first full length album 'Alien Haze'.

Through the relatively newly formed label, .jpeg artefacts, Joe houses an eclectic mic of releases spanning styles such as rock n roll, experimental and more recently a foray into fast paced 'brainy' dance cuts. Never bound by genre but always showing a stellar commitment to the music community and the breadth of sounds with in it, Joe's creative take on managing a label is well forth following.
