Chicago’s Kate Simko is one of recent years USA’s most accomplished electronic music talents – a genuine music love who commands equal respect behind the decks, the mixing desk and the keyboard.

Having chalked up releases for Hello?Repeat, Supplement Facts and Spectral Sound as well as a debut LP for the latter’s parent imprint, Ghostly International, Simko’s talents have been widely noted while recent releases and a live show alongside Tevo Howard as PolyRhythmic have cemented an already cast-iron reputation.

‘Go On Then’ in original form is a textbook example of subtlety, with rich yet unobtrusive production and flickering melodies giving way to Jem Cooke’s earthy vocal and songwriting talents. Ian Pooley, a true house-music master, builds on the original’s uncluttered aesthetic with an unctuous bassline-driven version that gently wraps itself in cossetting melodies before opening up at just the right moments. It’s these melodies that are allowed to run riot in Pooley’s dub, making for an intensely absorbing listen.

Franck Roger treads a heavier, MAW dub styled, path with his Mix version, where clattering percussion and earthquake bottom end provides a zippy undercurrent for a heady mix of warped vocal effects and gritty synths while his dub mix pushes a more urgent, harder backbone through the tripped out textures.

The ascendant Blond:ish close the package with a sub-aquatic lesson in low-end theory where every element has to have it’s own melody, space and counterpoint and deep house is a futurist artform.

Everything goes in cycles, both at a macro and micro level.

Perhaps subconsciously in response to the sensitivity of December's mix, which was in response to the thickness of November, which was in part was a response to October's delicacy, which I think may have been a turn from the intensity of my experience at Burning Man, I open February with an obvious driving (dare I say less sophisticated?) edge before cycling and sliding into a comfortable melodic descent.

'Everlasting Explosion' Deep House Mix

Dynamism....from a metaphysical perspective, it's the belief that the nature of every substance contains an expression of the universe. As an artistic movement, dynamism is the capture of an objects motion - both intrinsic and relative to its environment. To me, Dynamism is the push and pull of intensity and energy.

I consider this mix one of my more ambitious efforts, aiming to work through strong swings of intensity, melody, and motion while still staying on some semblance of a cogent course. I find that this is a mix that I enjoy the more I listen to it, which usually isn't the case. I hope it resonates with you as much as it does for me.

Blond:ish Live at OUTPUT Brooklyn [BEYEAH MIXTAPE ACT#015]

Everybody loves blondes right? Well In the last few years we’ve become even more of a fan of the fair, well ish as Canadian born London based duo Blond:ish have captured our attention with their unique production recipe which focuses on the art of creating music that is organic and multi-dimensional. Provocative basslines contrast with smooth textures and haunting vocals to defy categorization as anything other than cool. 

Thus it is with great excitement we welcome the girls in for this weeks podcast after a huge 2012 wherein they stormed the scene with a series of big releases including their psychedelic influenced ‘Lovers In Limbo’ EP  on Kompakt  which showcased Blond:ish’s curiosity of the late 60’s musical movement, as well dropping stellar efforts for Noir Music, NM2 and Get Physical. 

So with a big year behind them and even bigger 2013 planned with an extensive set of tour dates including Flying Circus in Ibiza at the end of the month and the Chicago leg of the Electric Daisy Carnival, things certainly seem to be looking up for the duo.  Quirky and innovative, very much like their native city of Montreal and the organized chaos that have accompanied their sets there since they burst onto the scene with their acclaimed residency at the city’s Cherry Club, we think the mix they’ve delivered from a small village in deepest, darkest Mexico is the perfect thing to get you in the mood for the summer ahead. I spent the last month traveling to various corners of the world. Some of the time was spent for gigs, some of the time at AfrikaBurn, and some was visiting friends and family. Amidst all the excitement, flying, partying, and jet lag, I'd often waver between desperately trying to stay awake and the opposite, hopelessly trying to fall asleep. During these bouts of insomnia, I found myself in a half-asleep dream-like state that I think made its way through into the feeling of this mix: varying levels of intensity while still holding on to a floating, dream-like state.
