Heute, am 15. August 2024, steht, wie bereits mehrfach angekündigt, eine ganz besondere Ausgabe von "XtraChill" auf dem Programm. Wie jedes Jahr legt der liebe Andreas eine vierwöchige Sommerpause ein. Und um diese lange Zeit zu versüßen, ist diese 421. Episode eine weitere in der seltenen und unregelmäßigen Reihe der "Künstler-Monografien" - Folgen, in denen nur ein einzelner Gast aus eigenen Werken einen exklusiven Musik-Mix für "XtraChill" zusammengestellt hat. Dieses Mal konnte der Dub-Techno-Tüftler Francesco Tamburrano, der in Episode 414 sein Debüt in diesem Podcast gab, für diese ehrenvolle Aufgabe gewonnen werden. Damit nicht genug: gleichzeitig werden zwei neue Netlabels vorgestellt, die bislang unter Andreas' Radar geflogen sind, "Ecoul SND" aus Lettland und "Techenie" aus Sibirien! Today, on August 15th, 2024, as already announced several times, a very special edition of "XtraChill" is on the program. Like every year, dear Andreas is taking a four-week summer break. And to sweeten this long time, this 421st episode is another in the rare and irregular series of "artist monographs" - episodes in which only a single guest has put together an exclusive music mix for "XtraChill" from his own works. This time, the dub techno tinkerer Francesco Tamburrano, who made his debut in this podcast in episode 414, was able to be won over for this honorable task. But that's not all: at the same time, two new net labels will be presented that have so far flown under Andreas' radar, "Ecoul SND" from Latvia and "Techenie" from Siberia! I find it very interesting to observe the range of different productions that fly under the banner of Dubtechno these days...

And although I like many of these variations, from the more ambient and chord-focused interpretations to the dry, atonal and polyrhythmic percussively  focused productions, I've been getting a sense lately that something is a little wrong. By this I mean since a certain point there has been a development towards a generic sound and format that somehow seems very superficial bringing the same flat and trivial sounds thrown together and promoted as  "Dubtechno"  and to me, often it seems like fast food compared to the original models. There is even  talk of a new wave. Both the production and the way it is presented seem somehow cheap, random and arbitrary to me. Often it is difficult if not impossible to avoid being interwined with these developments if you are enthusiastic about the often amorphous genre that is now labeled Dubtechno. 

Don't get me wrong I am not saying that there is no place for this "new sound" but the more I reflect on my enthusiasm - from my first exposure to dub and its techno hybrids, through rhythm & sound and through sound system culture in the late 90s to my renewed immersion in recent years, I realize that I should use the terms Dub and Dubtechno more and more carefully - coming from a place of a certain respect and appreciation. Because often these genres, carry a lot of cultural heritage, standing for a level of quality in delivery that in reality is hard to develop, and often lost to the disposable imitation economy we are beginning to see more and more of, which only serves to dilute things to an accepted average.

To me a big slice of what is promoted as Dub or Dubtechno these days falls well short of these original benchmarks that were set a long time ago. 

Through many conversations about these topics, reflecting on different perspectives, a mix was created recently where two fellows, I can call my friends, and I combined 3 sequential sets of 7 tracks each, to rest with and pay a little respect to some of the more remote but still relatable facets of dub in different ways. It's completely natural for styles to evolve and mix. It's great  to see with how much creativity and depth some artists do this.  And that's what this mix should stand for.

Mzwakhe Sikhosana, aka Sunny Inside, is a DJ and music promoter born and raised in Tsakane (Eastrand) - South Africa. He delves into ambient, deep, dub, minimalist, techno, and house and is deeply passionate about deep music.
His podcast project, Dark Mental Dub - DMD, showcases his dedication to deep and atmospheric electronic music, contributing to the vibrant music scene in South Africa.
Sunny Inside is an active promoter, helping friends and fellow musicians through platforms like Soundcloud,hearthis.at, and YouTube for different channels/PODCAST projects, all in the form of collaborating with others. His passion for music promotion extends beyond personal gain, as he aims to support and elevate his peers within the electronic music community.
