Seven songs, one unedited side of a cassette, recorded over two days while house-sitting in the Spring of 1991 in California. I played everything.

I had some lyric sketches and a few riffs going in, but most of it was improvised. Some cool, some not and it includes the saddest song I've ever written. I recorded the drums first and then guitar, bass, vocal. Sometimes I sang harmony while recording a second guitar, shaker, tambourine, harmonica, etc… 
I like the drumming.

The room was hardwood floors and area rugs approximately 40'X 40' with a 12' ceiling. It sounded great in there.

Guitar: Paisley Telecaster into a home-built (first tube amp I built) 5F2 Princeton with 8" speaker. 
Bass: Aztec Jazz Bass copy into my Marshall 50 watt Plexi 2X12" combo. 
Drums: a Jellybean kit with a 70's Ludwig Acrolite 5 1/4" snare. 
The instrument mic was a Radio Shack PZM on the floor about three feet away from the drums and amps. 
Vocal: A blend of a hand-held AKG330BT and the PZM out on the floor.

Recorded on a Tascam Porta-One 4-track cassette deck and mixed to a Sony AM-FM/Cassette boombox.

No effects on anything.

Recorded in East LA 1992 with Al (Big Al) Ponce on bass and his cousin "Nacho" on the drums. I always thought it could have been a Culture Club song. 

Sticks And Stones

Written in late 1988 in Hollywood at the Holly Drive house. I was experimenting with altered tunings on the guitar and liked this one. DADGAD. Recorded in 1996 at the Waters Road farmhouse basement on a Tascam 238 8-track cassette machine. It was my first attempt at recording acoustic guitar in stereo. I think the fluttery tape hiss adds to my nostalgic feeling about this one...

The Secret

Amy Willacker-Brown and I recorded this song in 2006 in Ypsilanti, Michigan on a lark. I found it in my archives and thought it was kind of cool. It's kind of in a character voice and Amy's piano playing is pretty sweet. I found this song in the early 80's in a folksingers workbook. I had no idea who wrote it or how the tune went and the chords didn't make sense some of the time. I loved the words though and just made it work. I recently discovered that it was a calypso song written in the 1930's by a guy named "Growling Tiger".

Money Is King

#TBT  I wrote this song in 1994. The picture is from 1990. It is one of my favorite songs that I have ever written. It's from the 2003 album Shining Farmer. The band plays so well on it. Lately, I've been trying to figure out how to play it solo acoustic.

Spencer Michaud is a narrative singer-songwriter that uses an elastic tenor voice to cover an incredible range of genres and emotions. He draws upon the ghosts of motown, tin-pan alley and the folk tradition to create a sound that is both theatrical and sincere. Michaud is a regular performer at the Jeff Buckley Tribute concerts held annually at Uncommon Ground in Chicago, IL. In 2014 Michaud released his debut EP, Tightrope Walker. He currently teaches guitar and songwriting in the Ann Arbor, MI area.
