2'42" is an online series that reflects on the evolving nature of duration and form in this globalized new millennium. 

A claim has been made that 2 minutes and 42 seconds is the perfect length for a pop song. This statement has been circling the internet, independently initiated by bloggers Joshua Allen and John Scalzi. It has been perpetuated by the likes of Boing Boing, Wired, NPR, and many more. 

2'42" takes that statement to heart. Music written and/or recorded in cities around the world has been "corrected" to fit that "perfect pop song" length of 2:42. Each track is named after the city where its source material originated.

Papken Sasouni (1929-2017), a native of Sassoun, met Bedros Alahaidoyan, his compatriot and renowned Armenian musicologist, in 1986, in Los Angeles. During this meeting, Sasouni gave Alahaidoyan a tape. This tape, recorded on October 12, 1979 in Talin (Armenia), is presented here in its entirety. It features a small group of natives of Sassoun who gathered in a house and took turns singing the traditional, folk, and patriotic/fedayi songs of their native lands – Sassoun, Talin, and Dalvorig.

Some of the recorded songs feature repeated verses. In other cases, the singers omitted some of the lyrics. Sometimes they also added their own jokes to the songs. We have been able to identify only one of the singers by name – Samuel Torosian.

The listeners will notice that in some of the songs, the singers, in order to further entertain their audiences, repeat parts of a song that are not necessarily choruses; or, when they forgot the lyrics, they ingeniously replace them with their own extemporaneous inventions (especially in the fedayi songs). In such cases, we generally chose to provide the standard lyrics that have appeared in published song books. However, in some cases, we transcribed the songs as sung, especially when the substitutions allowed the singers to avoid mentioning specific political parties, and instead use a lexicon that gives the lyrics a more universal Armenian flavor. These changes do not alter or distort the musical compositions of the songs in any way.

These performances once again remind us that the phenomenon that we call a “song,” once born, travels freely and is continuously altered by the people and localities it encounters.
