What brought us here today was his debut solo album under the name True Optimist. The album, "Mental Health," explores post-disco, post-punk and other art-rock rhythms. A few songs are streaming now, but you can preorder it right now from Self Aware Records ahead of the August 2nd release.

On top of playing in Guided by Voices, Doug has also spent time in Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, Nada Surf and so many others. We chat a lot on the episode about one of his first bands with his friend Frasier Sims, Children's Crusade. He's currently working on releasing their discography on LP, in one place for the first time on November 15th on Splendid Research. 

It's totally remixed, remastered and is a total gem that complements this episode really well. So if you like early proto-goth, punk, or post-punk then keep an eye out for that in the coming months.
