For its inaugural release, Spring Theory has tapped San Francisco producer Avalon Emerson for a three-track EP. It's called Church of SoMa--which, before you get any funny ideas about Huxlean wonder drugs, is actually a reference to San Francisco's industrial South of Market district, which has been an epicenter for dance music since time immemorial. The record pays homage to her long nights spent dancing and DJing in one particularly loved SoMa warehouse. 

For the titular a-side, Emerson goes deeper than she did on "Pressure"/"Quoi!," her debut 12" on Icee Hot earlier this year. It's a restrained thumper that rides a thick bassline through a maze of echoing bongos, chiming electric piano riffs, and unexpected Brazilian tribal calls. The hook comes from Emerson herself, who delivers a vocal performance that's paradoxically upfront and delicate as it weaves through the rhythm. Swedish house producer HNNY provides the remix, which teases the samples to the surface for an extended and idiosyncratic departure into Brazilian funk music.

Flip the record over, and you'll get "Synagogue of SoMa," the 12"-length b-side. Here she plays with the elements of the original, stripping things down to make way for heavy bass tones, physically affecting kicks, and floating melodic touches. But don’t be mislead, this is peak-time material for adventurous DJs looking to go beyond the ordinary.

About Zhala:

Zhala's haunting and evocative melodies are packed with a serious punch, full of thought-provoking lyrics and undeniable hooks. Using Stockholm as her base, but with the mindset of a modern day transnational, Zhala’s music is futuristic, labeled by the artist herself as “cosmic pop.”

Zhala (Rifat) was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. She became very involved in the local art and club scene and further developed her talents as an artist through dance, singing and her live shows. This path eventually led to her being signed to Konichiwa Records in 2012.

While recording the music for her first release, Zhala continued to tour - playing several festivals (Bestival, Isle of Wight, Way Out West), a unique performance at the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at Stockholm’s Moderna Museet, and most recently, opening slots for Robyn in London, Berlin and Stockholm. The dynamic duo of Sandman &amp; Riverside are at it again as the FastFWD label unleashes its eleventh release. Their Play Wit You EP is chock full of sexy house funk with top notch remixes from a couple of house music&rsquo;s influential tastemakers, Ron Trent and DJ Minx. The EP contains three originals featuring vocalist Kymberli Wright, all layered with drumbeats and synthesizers of varying timbres to take the listener on a whimsical journey &hellip; all cuts are bonafide galactic head nodders. First introduced to the house world via the Defected label, Kymberli Wright&rsquo;s soulful vocals gained notice throughout Detroit and beyond through her contribution to all-female jazz band Straight Ahead as well as having worked alongside such noted artists as Mary J. Blige and George Clinton. The first track with Sandman &amp; Riverside is &ldquo;Play Wit You,&rdquo; a Detroit-flavored gem filled with popping drum machine percussion, dueling synth melodies, and Wright&rsquo;s irresistible vocal hooks on top. &ldquo;PopTune&rdquo; is next, offering an enticing throwback to club music of the late &lsquo;80s within some powerful beats. Add Ms. Wright&rsquo;s wonderful vocal lines and this cut takes on the feel of Human League meets Shannon. The third track on the EP is &ldquo;SuperSonic,&rdquo; not to be confused with the classic JJ Fad ditty, though it&rsquo;s not too far off. Sandman &amp; Riverside&rsquo;s funk production backs the swirling, processed, and synthesized vocal phrases and outer space vibes. A pared-down Dub of this appealing track is also available. On the remix tip, the Prescription Records&rsquo; legendary Ron Trent reveals a hypnotic ten minute revision of &ldquo;Play Wit You&rdquo; that merges sensual loops and vocal effects into the soundtrack to a dark dance floor full of bodies in motion. It&rsquo;s a lofter&rsquo;s dream. Detroit&rsquo;s DJ Minx (Women On Wax) offers her vocal and instrumental Queen Beats versions which satisfy through booming low end, solid late night rhythms, and building, melodic chords. It&rsquo;ll have folks in the club grooving with drinks high in the air.

Swiss born Louis Desero debuts on Green Martian with a stunning progressive house-trance-chillout hybrid entitled "Masquerade EP". Louis became inspired with electronic dance music in 1996 and many years of partying  followed while his enthusiasm grew even more and more. Louis likes to dabble in many aspects of electronica, mainly in trance and chill, and has seen many releases over a few labels to date. What we are treated to here is something new, a fusion of sorts between various styles, something we think this talented guy does very well indeed and which is sure to have a big impact all over.

The title track "Masquerade" gets us started with a deep pad and sweet melodic intro which builds quickly into a very progressive groove. Superb chunky basses and expertly crafted drum arrangement keeps the flow. Many different instruments play a huge part in the vibe here and they all marry brilliantly with each other creating something that sounds and feels very fresh, one to watch for sure.

"Obsession" intros as if part of a huge concerto offering with stunning grand pianos and spacey pads, again we see some very cool arrangement skills bring in a full on progressive almost psy groove. Big chunky basses and retro themed stabs are contrasted with quite beautiful surreal pianos, something different and something for any DJ's box!

"Healing" has an intro that would be right at home on any chill compilation, absolutely wonderful melodic sequence which builds to a fantastic progressive beat. Deep deep basses and a rhythmic percussion is coupled with an ethically fuelled melody that gives this a very tribal feel. After the break the groove moves up a notch and it's full on party time with this track, brilliant.

Progressive house-trance stalwarts Sovve and Blufeld team up to deliver an outstanding piece of work in "Lying Low". The track is backed up with an impressive host of quality remixes that does justice to the original concept in many ways. Both these guys are very busy indeed with numerous releases under their belts and a wealth of remixes to boot.

The original mix is a magical affair filled with super sweet melodies and brilliant throbbing bassline, the tune kicks off in true 4 to the floor style with the percs building up to a cool arrangement. Soon the bassline takes over and an amazing synth-voice becomes the focus with those melodies bringing the vibe together.

Orsenite, which is a side project for Blufeld, delivers the first remix in style. Stripping back the original and exposing a deeper shade to the track. The bassline is a lot more subtle and the melodies sweep in and out, again we here the synth-voice dominate, top notch remix.

A firm favourite at the moment is 06R with his remix, his distinctive promelodic style seeps out of this track and this is a perfect example of an ever increasing sub genre. Total transformation on the original with the voice being the centre piece, much more prominent melodies that continue to build up to something quite euphoric, big club favourite for sure.

Now a veteran in the Bonzai stable, Kevin Vega lends his talents on the remix, a more housey affair ensues with a wall of sound approach. Huge big synths collide to build that wall with a chest pounding bassline. Subtle melodies are evident but the big sound takes over on a stunning mix.

Rishi K drops by for a bit of prog goodness, nice and steady rhythm with the voice sweeping by, good chunky basses blend in with superb synth work while a melody plinks on by. The prog vibe continues to rise throughout and the break reveals a myriad of sounds that combine well, top drawer stuff from Rishi and a big sound for any floor.
