Facing the Sea

Amateurish stuff about the Silmarillion, no intent to infringe JRRT


The refrain follows the first four lines of the poem of the Eärendillinwë that Frodo heard when he walked off for a minute during the evening in Rivendell and suddenly heard Elvish voices chanting.  The remainder of the piece is intended to shift into sort of a theme of the Silmarillion overall (sort of a cinematic theme) and doesn't follow the rest of poem's words.
Sharp listeners will note a few influences:

1) the spots where it seems to pause are the short bit of music when Aragorn tries to give back the Evenstar to Arwen, shortly after the halfway point of the Two Towers movie (when we had discs it was a minute or 2 into the 2nd disc after Eowyn gives Aragorn the rabbit stew ("The Evenstar does not wax or wane...").  With a triumphal major-key phrase-ending intended for Beren & Luthien that differs from the Two Towers phrase.

2) a few places I borrow from the Returner's Hideout theme in Final Fantasy 6.

Eärendillinwë 2022 06 13 Rough

As the crocuses rise from the ground.
The boots of the wise man still tramping them down.
As the world makes its slow turn around.
An infinite circle just spinning to ground.
Don't be sad that you live by the ocean,
stone throw to the sea. 
Whilst your bodies in infinite motion, 
but how can that be? 

First things first comes the test, got to prove you're the best, just hitch up on your horse and lets go.
'Cause the meltwater flows where the crocuses grow, 'tween the rocks and the stones that don't know. 
That the river has taken its toll.
That the winter is set to move on.
That the boulders that it set to roll.
Will return to the place they belong.

As the crocuses rise in the spring.
The world in a state of bewildered mourning. 
Though most made it through to this dawn.
There is bare earth where once stood a ripe field of corn. 
There's a chill that comes with your devotion, 
an obvious fee.
Like the wind crossing over the ocean,
just naturally.

Massive cinematic drums drive the track while a memorable lead melody and dark synths create the tension.

If life's just a short interlude.
'pon which we just briefly intrude. 
If the light is the darkest 'fore dawn.
And the kids didn't ask to be born.
Just a dapple of light through the trees.
Feathers hang on the breeze.

If the world's just an apple in a space.
That the prothets can't put in its place.
It there anything out there or no?
Just a indifferent void that's let go.
Just a ember of fire that briefly transpires and glows. 

If someone comes up with a way.
For us to move forward and say.
Oh, remember when we used to pay.
For the things that were ours anyway  
All is dark and undone, all is pressed up and worn out, okay?

A light that can pierce through in the dark.
The right way to ignite the spark. 
A look from the edge of the sky.
An awkward exchange you let by.

PROGRAM NOTE
I wrote this fanfare for my wedding. It was designed to take advantage of the surrounding balcony and resonant acoustics of Middlebury College’s Mead Chapel in Middlebury, Vermont, where we were married. The title of this piece was originally Wedding Fanfare. Since I think this piece could work well for concerts or other types of events, I shortened the title to Fanfare.
