La Myope et la Beauté

Un jour que je spleenais dans un train sans saveur,
Je vis, sur un des sièges, un vieux cahier laissé
Peut-être par un scribe en ce siècle égaré ;
Et ce wagon si terne a repris des couleurs.

Voici donc, sans mentir, ce qui était écrit :
La reine Cléopâtre avait une mangouste
Comme unique animal de douce compagnie
Plus chaude, s’il en est, qu’une froide langouste.

Mais Madame Mangouste, hormis d’être une flèche,
Beaucoup plus qu’une taupe, était tout à fait myope.
Dédaignant les lunettes, elle était sur la brèche
Comme va le montrer cette suite interlope.

À travers ses faux cils, la reine un soir contait 
La passionnante vie des archéoptéryx
Au petit Césarion qui, de loin, préférait
À ces récits barbants, les BD d’Astérix.

Mais c’était sans compter sa mangouste bigleuse
Qui confondit le haut de son royal diadème
Avec un vrai cobra d’une âme belliqueuse
À la gueule affamée comme après un carême !

Son grand cœur sur la patte, il fallait la sauver.
Agile, elle sauta, mais glissa sur le gel
Dont dame Cléopâtre à l’excès tartinait
Ses longs cheveux bouclés pour rester toujours belle.

Le mortifère croc mordit le cou d’albâtre
D’où, sur le marbre froid, tout le sang a gilé .
C’est ainsi que mourut la belle Cléopâtre
Par cause de myopie et d’excès de beauté.

J’ai voulu, en hommage au scribe sans délai,
Dans cette page où mon clavier neuf a serti
La copie rapportée dans ces quelques couplets
Offrir la vérité d’une histoire inouïe.

The Myopic and the Beauty

One day I was spleen in a train without flavor,
I saw, on one of the seats, an old notebook left
Perhaps by a scribe in this lost century;
And this so dull car took again colors.

Here then, without lying, was what was written:
Queen Cleopatra had a mongoose
As the only animal of sweet company
Hotter, if it is, than a cold lobster.

But Mrs. Mongoose, apart from being an arrow,
Much more than a mole, was quite short-sighted.
Disdaining glasses, she was on the alert
As this interloping suite will show.

Through her false eyelashes, the queen one evening told 
The fascinating life of the archaeopteryx
To little Caesarion who, by far, preferred
Asterix comics to these boring tales.

But it was without counting his mongoose
Who mistook the top of his royal tiara
With a real cobra of a warlike soul
With a mouth as hungry as after Lent!

Her big heart on her paw, it was necessary to save her.
Agile, she jumped, but slipped on the gel
With which Lady Cleopatra spread her long curly hair
Her long curly hair to remain always beautiful.

The deadly fang bit the alabaster neck
From which, on the cold marble, all the blood gelled.
