"The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner" is a poem by Randall Jarrell, about the death of a gunner in a Sperry ball turret on a World War II American bomber aircraft.

From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.

That one there is procyon,
It shines like the tip

the red top of orion,
That means that it's cold,
And the end could be nigh.
The bottom is propped up,
By the bright shining dog star,
Sending people mad,
Making other folk glad,
And boring into your minds eye. 

They rise in the east,
And they go somewhere that way.
But one these nights,
They'll no longer be light.
When they end for you personally. 

A space is a spade,
And a shovels a shovel,
A stars just a point
Of light in the sky.
