London based record label and artist collective squareglass are proud to present their latest offering, the intriguing and absorbing debut EP from London based electronic music artist JL Segel.

An art-school-graduate-turned-composer, he has collaborated with acts such as Lapsley and Stubbleman (Pascal Gabriel). JL Segel (real name Rotem Haguel) utilises a modular approach to production, marrying ambient and dance music-inspired motifs with experimental and conceptual textures, calling to mind the works of Four Tet, Skee Mask, Floating Points and Rival Consoles.

His latest project “SKIN” is a 4-track EP that explores the idea of tactility and sonic experience through sound synthesis. Haguel explains: “The sense of touch is really interesting to me. That’s because it doesn’t only give one the awareness of the objects touched, but also of one’s own body. Being this thing that stands at the crossroad of oneself and the world, I felt compelled to talk about it in musical terms. Using synthesizers as metaphors for bodies, being alive and modifiable and each having its own DNA, I wanted to convey how sensations ‘move’ and oscillate in our body and in our mind, revealing slowly unfolding processes and the very potential for transformation”

From the grainy, angular notes of “Symptoms of Contact”, through the calming, delay soaked arpeggios of “Interior Marks”, shifting oscillations of “Origins of Desire” and rippling vibrations of “Kinesis”, JL Segel uses his modular synths as a tool to replicate ebbs and flows of life, mimicking the way in which we experience the world around us through touch and feel.

In a time characterized by the distance between us, Segel’s ode to tactility provides a beautiful and reinterpretation of one of the most personal human senses.

London based record label and artist collective squareglass reveal their first offering of 2020, the multifaceted ‘Clarity EP’ from sound engineer, producer and trained jazz saxophonist MagicFX (AKA Dom Kirtley).

The “Clarity EP” comprises 4 shimmering and slightly off-kilter dance music pieces underlined by a strong aesthetic concept. Kirtley explains : “I’m really interested in texture/colour/aesthetic in dance music and tried to focus on that throughout the EP. My goal was to put together something that was light and colourful while being energetic and propulsive, with a lot of textural information to wash over you while listening”.

From the oddball, sci fi sounds of the EP’s title track, through the twisting and intricate, acid-house infused spirals of “Burst” and “Patience”, and soaring closer “Elevate”, “Clarity”’s morphing sounds take centre stage and inform the way in which the tracks unfold, providing a sense of constant transformation.

Produced using an all-hardware, synthesiser-based set up, great emphasis is placed on the texture of each element and its place within the sonic landscape, whilst utilising intricate EQ work and spatial production techniques alongside 90s rave sensibilities. Providing a strong start for the hotly tipped newcomer, the Clarity EP sees MagicFX put his stamp on the current dance music landscape, expertly blending bold, abstract sound design whilst simultaneously constructing solid, dance floor swaying grooves deep throughout.

Made between London, Granada, and Berlin over the course of four years, @aphty_khea's next EP, 'Salt & Copper', takes the shape of a warm, soulful five-tracker via @squareglass.

The record's title track, 'Salt & Copper', tells the story of an emotional sexual encounter by the sea whilst menstruating, and embodies radical self-love, accepting and finding a home in your own body even when society deems it as filthy, unwanted or taboo.

MagicFX - Elevate

The tantalising thought of the returning night keeps the blood pumping and the clock galloping on. Visceral images of draft beer with loved ones amidst an entire cast of strangers causes my mouth to salivate and my resolve to harden. They say you never know the worth of water till the well is dry. For now, confinement is merely a period of self-reflection and a profound opportunity to develop an appetite for life. 

London-based label and artist-collective squareglass gift us with ‘Clarity’, the latest EP from Dom Kirtley, best known as ‘MagicFX’. The four-track release is a frenetic and jubilant collection of house and techno tracks, each of which is brought to life utilising a combination of physical synthesisers and Kirtley’s infinite expertise in sound. Our pick ‘Burst’ is a colour-soaked house track, dripping in acid influences. With squelching basslines, subtle pads, light breaks and four to the floor kicks, the track overflows with energetic optimism.

They'd asked if she wanted the bad news or the good news first. But even with the good shoe-horned in, the bad still overuled. She'd half expected this situation to transpire soon, but the reality was completely different. As the tears began to stain her cheeks, he placed his hand on hers and pulled her close. That was all she needed in that moment; love was the only thing that could lift her.

Since their conception in 2016, London-based duo Athlete Whippet have brought a fusion of musical influences to the table, resulting in timeless contemporary jams that showcase the wide breadth of their musial palette. For their next release titled Your Love Is Lifting Me, which finds a home on the pair's own imprint Squareglass, they continue to explore these signature sounds, this time with both eyes fixed firmly on the dance floor. Conceived as an ode to solidarity and compassion in these current times, the EP aims to connect people through the lens of electronic music, and the uplifting, optimistic and emotional sentiments across the release are guaranteed to do just that.

Squareglass label founders Athlete Whippet continue to showcase their genre-bending ability on ‘Your Love Is Lifting Me’. Your Love Is Lifting Me (Aleksandir's Loft Rework)

She'd caught his eye on the train home a few times now, which had advanced to a passing smile; a game of back and forth. Neither had plucked up the courage to say hello yet, perhaps it was the excitement of this mysterious exchange. The worry that if one of them opened their mouth that would evaporate in an instant. But something had to progress. This time as she stepped off the train, she brushed her hand softly against his, feeling the hairs bristle on her neck almost immediately. This sensory touch was enough to keep her wondering until their next chance meeting.

The next record on London-based label and artist collective squareglass comes in the form of a debut EP from JL Segel. Having collaborated with the likes of Lapsley and Stubbleman, Segel now turns his attention to his solo pursuits with the release of SKIN: a four-track EP that blends ambient atmospheres and electronic motifs with abstract textures.

The EP seeks to explore the relationship between sound and the body, drawing on how sensations stimulate the senses. JL Segel expands on this idea: “The sense of touch is really interesting to me.
