Wake up today, turn on your computer and the prevailing narrative is that we should be afraid. Living in fear of terrorists, "thugs", immigrants, the transgendered, etc.. Everyday we're supposed to update our anxiety with a new source of fear, clumsily stereotyped and packaged into a 140 character headline. Always given the "what" but never the "why" or "how". 

Wake up today, turn on your computer and the prevailing rhetoric is that we should be vigilant. Waging righteous wars against war-torn refugees, black kids carrying skittles, and the LGBT community attempting to live and love without persecution. All to make our neighborhoods, lawns, and bathrooms great again. 

When I woke today, I was afraid. But not towards a religion, not towards a race of systemically-oppressed people demanding that their lives finally matter, and not even towards a man with small hands doing his best Hitler impersonation.. I was afraid of myself. 
I saw my reflection in the screen and was afraid of my own apathy

At what point does our collective calloused indifference become responsible for these mass killings. 
At what point do we take ownership of our ignorance and start asking questions when we know the answers are bullshit. 
At what point do we realize that we are more powerful than any gun lobby and that our voices do matter. 

So today, I was vigilant. To keep up with the 133 mass shootings this year alone, I helped by donating blood to the Red Cross. Then I called my congresswomen and congressman asking why my gay friends still can't and why congress continues to deny the CDC from studying gun violence. Then I confirmed my registration to vote in November, because our voices do fucking matter.

In the wake of these tragedies we're quick to point fingers but never at ourselves. 
We're prone to speak the name of the infamous and forget the names of the innocent lost. 

so I looked myself in the reflection and asked my fear "do you need me, like i need you?"
I asked my apathy "do you need me, like I need you?"

Originally released in 1980 on Phase 7’s highly sought-after LP, Playtime. The band recorded at Honolulu’s Broad Recording Studio, not long after Mike Lundy and Aura finished the final touches on their albums (both recently got the reissue treatment on Aloha Got Soul). 

“So Good To Be In Love” is an uplifting Brazilian style disco-funk tune composed by Phase 7’s Les Fernandez. “Could It Be Love” mellows things out with an original soul groover written by bandmate Sandy Pascual.

‘As Sementes’ is a mid tempo, funk-soul head nodder laden with percussion and soaring vocals and strings. Originally released in 1974 on Odeon. Major released one album and a handful of ‘compactos’ on Odeon and Som Livre.

‘Dando Fora’ is a mid-tempo samba-funk gem – a firm favourite for David in his DJ sets. Taken from their 'Edição Extra No. 2' LP released on Copacabana in 1972.

Jesse Boykins III is a Soul artist from Chicago, later relocating to Miami and finally Brooklyn . His first EP, Dopamine: My Life On My Back EP was released February 14, 2008 and his follow up The Beauty Created LP was released November 25, 2008 through NomaDic MuSic, a partnership between him and long time friend and New York Giants wide receiver Sinorice Moss.
Jesse’s career in music began at the age of 9 when he joined his school choir. He soon began auditioning around Miami and found himself recording with various local Miami artists. In High School Jesse was invited to perform in the Grammy Jazz Ensemble and recorded a full length album with them.
After high school Jesse was recruited to The New School University in New York City. At The New School Jesse perfected his skills as a writer, performer, arranger and producer and as a vocalist. He also studied with classical trainer Kamal Scott and Universal recording artist Bilal.
