According to Wikipedia, a banoffee pie is an English dessert pie made from bananas, toffee, cream and biscuits. This pie, consisting of fruits and condensed milk, is a portmanteau of toffee and banana. A delicious, fruity dessert, best served chilled. The boys recently embarked on a tour of Australia and to their amusement find people often have no idea what a banoffee pie even is. In a world of serious labels and serious music the the label wanted something playful and fun. Ell and Sandy, label owners have given numerous definitions and anecdotes as to why they named their label after a dessert. But truth be known, it is not that deep.

Banoffee Pies has forged a delicious back catalogue of treats, ranging from Romanian minimal on their Black Label series to hip hop on their Beats tapes series. The recipe for their continuing success is ‘collaboration’ and the duo often work with friends, bringing a number of producer pals together on their limited series and bridging artists on projects such as Clifford Brown and Jeen Bassa’s forthcoming LP with Ella Mae, a collaborator on the beat tape who was brought on board for this project to reignite a previously instrumental only piece to a full album with vocals. Recorded on karaoke microphones and arranged on Garageband, the record has shades of Erykah Badu in Brazil fusing R’n’B, Latin, and Soul grooves.

New French label Cosmocities moves into it's 2nd release after the eclectic compilation Cosmocities Records Vol 1 (3 x Vinyl) which featured the likes of Leif, Segue, DJ Maboku, Jaime Read, Inner Science & Jitwam. This time we introduce to you a collaboration between Inkswel & Stan Smith.

A meeting of creative minds formed on mutual respect for each others output, Stan ‘Steam’ Smith and Inkswel connect as ‘Active Ingredients’. Inkswel an electronic music futurist gliding the boundaries between Hip Hop, House Music and Modern Beat culture and Stan Smith an MC who honed his skills in the golden era but has always looked forward with past works produced by Daz-I-Kue (Bugz in The Attic) and Soulparlor. The ‘Middle’ is a refreshing perspective, something that came natural, a collection of songs the team did together over a period of 6 months of sending each other vibes back and forth from Adelaide to Atlanta. With outerwordly cover art by the infamous Tokio Aoyama and remixes from broken beat legend Kaidi Tatham and Soul Of Sydney veteran Edseven, the ‘Middle’ encapsulates the forward thinking evolution of the Hip Hop inspired generation.

Far Out Recordings is delighted to present the debut single from transatlantic pop retroists Limoncello.

In 2017, NYC producer/guitarist Rich Bennett and Paris based Italian Argentine singer/songwriter Mari Rosa started sharing tunes with each other across the pond. Basking in the sounds of Lô Borges, Elis Regina, Steely Dan, and a playlist of early 80s roller rink disco, felt like a form of solace amidst the tense and changing culture around the world. It wasn’t long before the pair decided to write and record some tunes of their own, which in their own words created “a sound that will make you want to lace up your rollerskates”

Sung in Portuguese, the breezy lounge-funk stepper ‘Music Aqui’ cooks up blissful Brazilian beach boogie vibes, and the Spanish sung post-disco love jam ‘Com Tu Amor’ feels uncannily like an early 80s holy grail that’s never been sold on Discogs, it’s difficult to believe it was recorded only last year.

ZudRangLam Radio 006/1 : Ramadan Special with Dangdut Banget (Basa Bongo/Zudrangma) [24.04.20] part1

WOLF Music offer up something a little different to their usual tip, enlisting the warm dusty reverberations of four-piece, jazz-not-jazz collective Velour for a 7 inch of hazy, genre traversing rhythms. Alongside being producer for the Velour project, long-standing member of the WOLF pack Mr. Fries gives his own distinctive house touch to the flip side remix.

Perfectly capturing the new school of jazz, Essen-based Velour crisscross genres drawing on elements from each yet anchoring their roots in the richness of jazz’s deft melodies and percussive touches. Head-nodding down the open road, ‘Pose’ is that undeniably soulful, first swig of summer many tracks strive to be. Morphing into a woozy affair as the sun sets midway through, Velour’s songwriting talent well outstrips their years. Throw WOLF pack member Mr. Fries into the mix, kneading in his signature production style and the freshly baked result straddles the intersection between jazz, broken beat, house and soul.

Fries then takes on remix duties for the flip, maintaining that dusty demeanour yet going for a full frontal Moodymann-esque house interpretation. The smokey jazz bar sax, background hustle and weighty beat make for a summertime heater served straight from the grill, garnished just right with Mr. Fries own vocals over the top.

Velour - Pose

MIMS is excited to premiere "Sketchy", the second single from saxophonist, composer & beatmaker, Thijsenterprise's forthcoming 'Lahringen' album, an addictive jazz tune with post punk energy. We are also excited to premiere a special DIY music video put together this week, just for us!

Reinier Thijs a.k.a. Thijsenterprise's new project 'Lahringen' begins where most of his previous creations have left off. Through reedy skronking sax, no easy listening aesthetics here, we get that passport to the '80s. The intersection between Lou Reed's old New York attitude and the encroaching rhythmic assault about to hit. Post-punk, featuring steady bass lines—peak demon Jaco to cool as fuck Slits era—in transit.

"Sketchy", an original arrangement, taps Reinier's dedication to skateboarding. Named for when skate rats land a trick sloppy, non-smooth, or ugly he does in fact match the sound of the bass with the feeling of ‘meh.’ “The drums and percussion in the track carry a driving pulse, and the saxophone plays a light melody, ping-ponging between the groove of the rhythm section. Which makes the track very repetitive, catchy," states Reinier.

Repurposing discordant sounds, as an alchemist traveling through time, Reinier sounds at home. Clearing out space, grounding up source material, for the cruise. Truth be told, he's confessed to pulling attitude and sound inspiration from The Lounge Lizards and James Chance. It’s unmistakable and you can hear it. But the combination of new school beat-making tactics, via scientists Makaya McCraven and Jeff Parker, who's shown it's far more interesting tossing out the rule book, see Reinier come full-circle with the wide spectrum of his sound jacket.

“When I started making beats, that came from a deep love for hip-hop but also to see if I could create music without my saxophone. In that sense, I’m more of a musician rather than I’m a beatmaker,” says Reinier.

'Lahringen' is an anagram for the Dutch city Harlingen, as used by author Simon Vestdijk in his Anton Wachter novel series, whom is Thijsenterprise's favorite writer. The album is part of his 'Elfsteden' ('Eleven Cities') series of releases, each named after a city in an infamous Dutch ice-skating race which only takes place in brutal winters.

"Sketchy" sees digital release on November 4 and ‘Lahringen’ (which we also love!) is out November 27th on vinyl and on all digital platforms.
