The Groovy List #17

Lots of electronic sounds this week. Let's Eat Grandma have had a bit of a makeover and there's much more depth to their sound than before, which is quite a contrast to the acid jazz leanings of Theory of Movement. Even when Orkid take things in a bit poppier (and anthemic) direction, or Albert Hammond Junior goes more alt-rock, there's still a strong electronic underpinning. It's nice too, to see the roots of Stereolab showing through in the Cavern of Anti-Matter, before Boys round things off with in a dream pop vein. There's no track that really stands out this week, although Westworld's "Dreamworld" comes closest.

Hunee just happens to be our favourite Korean Berliner. Not only because he's particularly nifty behind the crossfaders, but also due to his handsome approach to making house and techno. His releases have been few and far between, rightfully choosing quality over quantity with output. But now he returns from a three year hiatus to reveal his long awaited debut longplayer, Hunch Music via Rush Hour.

It continues an ongoing partnership between Hunee and the Amsterdam label—he curated the Soichi Terada-focused Sounds From The Far East compilation back in February.  The album was also recorded in Amsterdam, where Hunee has been living since relocating to the city in 2014 from Berlin via a stint in LA. 

Out of the ten tracks, "Cross Road" had most pulling power. Characterised by acid synths and a rolling drum underbelly, it's cinematic and mystifying in equal measure.

The days had grown long and tiresome, there was little light in the place in which he sat. Four walls surrounded his very being, he had not known he would miss her as much as this once she had gone. Kampana delivers once again with a pair of dance floor gems that will please lovers of funk, disco and gospel alike.

On the A-side, @aroop-roy means serious business with 'Reason to Dance'. Driven by an outrageous slap bass, infectious horn stabs and a limb-shaking vocal refrain, it's no surprise that this has been THE secret weapon of his recent sets around the world.

On the flip, Detroit native Peter Croce, fresh from the huge success of his Razor-N-Tape EP, comes in equally strong, with the gospel-fuelled disco cut 'Just Like Heaven'. The track builds patiently, lingering on a raw disco groove, honing in on a powerful brass section and spirit-lifting vocals, and eventually climaxing with epic strings and thunderous piano.

When it comes to releasing Lo-Fi house grooves, there are few labels at the moment that are doing it better than Shall Not Fade. In fact, only a couple weeks ago, we were writing about their superb release of Trudge’s “Negative Spaces” on their sister imprint Lost Palms. This is precisely why we find SNF's upcoming release of Italian producer Nicholas so exciting! It appears that the label is branching out of its comfort zone, deciding to come out with a record that is discernibly different from the rest of their discography.

For those that are fans of Nicholas, you are aware that jazz plays an integral role in the music he comes out with. His mini-LP on Seb Wildblood’s Church titled Lonnie’s Reprise is a perfect example of how the house producer has taken his career into a whole new direction; choosing to produce music that feels more at home near a fireplace than a late night on the dancefloor. This is precisely the sort of mood Nicholas is going for in his latest, four-track EP “Sound of Earth,” in which he orchestrates the jazziest of affairs with the help of recent collaborator and Detroit vocalist Nikki-O (aka Sky Covington).

The lead track Ancient Future does a fantastic job of setting the tone for the rest of the piece. Isolated, yet vibrant drum notes mark its beginning, but gradually work in a billowing assortment of keys, high-hats, snares, and horns that become more and more captivating as the song builds and builds. Then, after reaching a climax at the 5-minute mark with a lively duet of trumpets, Ancient Future disassembles itself and leaves in a similar fashion it arrived: with the play of drums. However, they certainly sound more somber the second time around; giving the song an almost fleeting, ephemeral quality.
