Get Ready

It seems that each season has its own "perfume of mystery".  In a typical Texas panhandle spring, it is Lilac and Russian Olive that perfume the air.  In the deep South, Magnolias are hypnotically fragrant.  In summer it is the fresh, petrichor air after a rainstorm, or a newly-mown field of hay.  In the fall there is a pungency of fallen leaves as they are raked into piles, and as the days grow cooler, smoke from a fireplace during an evening walk. It is an odor that grows stronger and crisper as winter sets in and the sweet scent of pine with the setting up of Christmas trees.  Dan wanted to capture this "perfume of mystery" with his unique composing and keyboard skills and invited me to come along. Thank you my friend for inviting me. It may be obvious that this piece has its roots in Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" Op. 27 No. 2.  My first iterations were much closer to the original but I have now wandered far afield.  Sincere thanks to you for listening.  I'm honored.

et tu ne viendras pas.

J'ai commandé un verre
comm' si tu étais là ;
peut être, je l'espère,
le vin te remplacera.
Tu veux m’écrire une lettre,
je suis venue pour ça,
s'il l’vin tourne la tête,
je crois qu'il m'aidera.

Pour essuyer le fard
qui coule de mes yeux,
je me sers du buvard,
mais je n'y vois pas mieux.
Tu n’as pas écrit une
seule ligne, tu vois,
vu que le porte-plume
se refuse à mes doigts.

J'ai bien peur que la page
ne reste toute blanche
autant que ton visage
qui pleure sur tes manches.
Mais il faut qu'elle s'en aille
te dire tout là-bas
que j'ai le cœur en bataille,
prêt à mourir pour toi. 

Ici, dans notre café
où j'ai vidé mon verre,

l'alcool fait son effet,

penholder refuses to accept my fingers.

weeping on your sleeves.

Here, in our café
where I've emptied my glass,

the alcohol takes its toll,
the war's over
and my letter flies off
full of words of love
telling you of my mad joy.

We had an appointment
at "La Petite Madeleine"
where I'm a little drunk;
Hurry up, I love you!

my shivers and my pain,
because I didn't think
of putting on a little wool.

Au café avec Muette

This tune began with just the upright bass (played on keyboard) & flute part (played with real flute), that were inspired by an old song that Mark liked a lot by an English Jazz trio called The Herbaliser.  Once he had it in progress, he asked me & Chris to see if we could contribute.

I added the trippy high pitch reverse guitar effect, and the bluesy lead guitar in the middle section (thus the title, Blue In The Middle). And Chris added some delightful atmospheric guitar and effects, as well as the Portishead influenced drum track. Mark was then inspired to add the background echo guitar sound in the middle section, and a bit of percussion and minor sound effects. 

Then Mark laid a really fine mix on it and I did the final mastering.  I'm glad Mark brought me in on this one, I really enjoy the ambience of it.
