It’s been years that I’ve been planning to immortalize my Dubstep vinyl collection in the format of a “best-of” mix - my thesis, my capstone, my Dubstep magnum opus. 

I’m not in any way claiming these are the definitive tunes of the dubstep universe (the ones that established or progressed the culture, or were otherwise the most pivotal or influential). Although I’ve DJ’d dubstep exclusively for 15 years and have a background in ethnomusicology, I know enough to know that I still know very little of the totality, especially from an academic perspective. There are other authoritative voices in the scene that should be resourced for that task. This is an important distinction: these are not the greatest dubstep tunes of all time, based on empirical data and peer reviewed — they are my favorite of all time. 

I take this seriously as something that’s immensely meaningful in my life and identity, and every track in this mix series is one that I would unflinchingly eject into space to represent dubstep in its entirety if NASA ever decided to make the completely rational decision to task me with such a project. This is quite literally the very best I can muster. Here now unveiled to the world are the dubstep golden records (ok more like a golden box set, as this is the first hourlong mix of six).
