This is a full live recording from a opening set of Nowadays Nonstop in August.
I was conscious of the texture of sound through the set from dubby, psychedelic to groovy techno/house. Playing at Nowadays is always special and gratefully a lot of people showed up from early hour. I’m glad how it went and to put this out through NAFF mix series. Hope you enjoy!

Have I been to Amara? Like anyone who has, I’ve no way of knowing for sure. 

I am told she is wrapped in a blue-grey fog that extends like an aura for miles in all directions. As certain kinds of fog have a way of doing, it only makes itself known to you when you are already well within its grasp. At best, the traveller may remember entering and exiting the hazy periphery of this city, but whatever comes to pass within is impossible to recall, and one can only recognize signs in the traces it leaves behind in the mind and body. This may be as subtle as a change in the way you speak, as disquieting as an unaccountable bruise or scrape on the skin, or as drastic as a sudden change in the length of your hair. 

Recently, lovers have told me that my way in bed has somehow changed, that the color of my eyes has grown cooler and softer. Flavors that I once detested are now among my most cherished. Certain objects or images — a marble figurine, a drop of blood hanging from a small cut on my finger, a glass bowl shot through with broken sunlight — have stirred up in me the faintest and most curious ecstasy. It is as though, by some association conjured in these moments, I behold not a memory in itself but the effects it has on everything around it, the lines of sentiment that ripple across the waters of my mind from the invisible impression of an unknown stone.

A city will change you, slowly in time, in ways you may not notice as they set in. But what if the city that changes you is not so much a place as a strange and beautiful void, one that quietly haunts the heart, and from which no memory can escape?

OW13 Marco Maldarella - Silent Logic

What happens if you let some of the chips fall where they may? Does it mean giving up command, or is it a way to reclaim it? ‘Silent Logic’, Marco Maldarella’s second release on Omen Wapta, doesn’t try to pose this question, it just answers it. With transitional potency.

In a sincere and understated way, this is a project that demarcates life in flux. Not as a document, but by presenting music practice as a tool to catalyse transformation. It’s an esoteric glimpse into an alternate universe where personal development book charts are topped by the greats of automatic writing. Rhythms as sigils, timbre as gnosis; some elements seize control, others unleash the subliminal.

Over the span of an astounding twenty tracks, single-take synth excursions are combined with calculated rhythmic structuring. The patterns on Silent Logic start to live life on their own beyond the intentional accents in the grid. As a product of multiple manual drum phasings, different actors in the percussive section spindle around each other. The number of elements per track is restrained to an austere framework, but a rigorous eye for detail hands the compositions a level of depth that goes beyond immediate perception, nestling itself into the brain stem. Right in place for celestial expansion.

‘Silent Logic’ breaks microtraditions wide open, but it doesn’t break with them. Not only does it present a pivotal point in Marco Maldarella’s discography and practice with its mammoth length and thematic depth; it traverses a junction within the Omen Wapta continuum. From a large base of source material is born a tracklist that swells, accelerates and comes alive as we progress through it. The result is a first half that flips tradition into nowness, elegantly bringing more conventional tempos home to the imprint. It wields the second and third act into a rip-roaring conclusion that presents life as being cyclical beyond mere duplication.

This careful process ultimately leaves us with a very real artifact. On Silent Logic, the space between expressions prevents complete meaning from becoming unveiled. The impact of its sounds comes as the result of experience pursued to the end. The free-flowing mind is channeled into clarity. It’s a testament to the power of straws pulled at random.
