As the founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for mindfulness in Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical school, Jon Kabat-Zinn's career has been focused on research in mindfulness. His practice as a student under such teachers as Thich Nhat Hanh and Seung Sahn and his continued daily contemplative practice led him to a long career as he developed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and defining mindfulness as "awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally". He is currently a board member of the Mind and Life Institute and Professor of Medicine Emeritus.
 
The following is an excerpt of an interview from the documentary film 'The Science of Wisdom'. The interview takes place at the International Symposium for Contemplative Studies in Boston hosted by the Mind and Life Institute.

I’m worried what you just read was LOTS of rain and thunder. What I said was ALL the rain and thunder. (Shoutout to Ron Swanson from Parks & Rec!) After Ron heard there was no internet or phone service on this tropical island, he immediately packed his bag and left southwestern Indiana for only his second time. As he is happily eating all the eggs and bacon in the jungle, a crazy rainstorm pelts the trees with buckets of rain while thunder rumbles in the distance. Two soothing nature sounds in one place! Whether you're eating an entire tropical island's supply of breakfast fare or trying to sleep or study, this thunderstorm is a great background sound to set the mood. And Ron, aka Duke Silver, knows all about setting the mood.

Since Ron is not encouraging company to join him on the island, we can all enjoy this sound of jungle rain with lightning. By blocking out distracting sounds, the rainforest white noise is perfect for helping you fall asleep and remain sleeping all night long. If you struggle with insomnia, the rainstorm with rolling thunder can help by providing a soothing ambience for your bedroom.
