Its all about holding onto your dream, in this case, music, when times seem toughest. 'Emotional Playing ......'

Do you ever suffer 'musician's block'? Have you ever felt inadequate? Have you been stuck for ideas, or tried to create and nothing seems to come out? Its a 'war' inside one's own mind.  Perfectionism, lack of time, 'I'm not good enough' …. excuses abound …. eventually negative feelings can creep in  and override that 'dream', whatever it may be, [in this case music]. Frustration can creep in and 'musician's block' rears its ugly head.

Such thoughts may be reinforced, as one gets out of practice and the skills one gained eventually weaken ….. one feels like they need to start all over again; just as I did, when poor health intervened in my 'journey' and I felt that no progress had been made; that I had to start all over again; the 'fun' had been lost. …………….. My original goal: to enjoy, to escape, to heal, and to feel with music - my outlet-  had become a source of frustration. Maybe others can relate to such feelings?

Musicians are often described as quite emotionally sensitive people, whom are able to push out such emotions into, and through their music -  and it is these internal feelings that make a difference - it doesn't have to be 'perfect' - it is a journey of story-telling and of transporting ourselves and others away. This was my 'journey' and journeys can be 'rocky roads'.  

Musicians are story tellers with music, and not just with words - and it doesn't need to be 'perfect', creativity can never be 'perfect'.
- we feel and inject  pain, anger, sadness, happiness, and beauty, we reveal the emotions into the world of sound, transporting ourselves and other people into this 'world', often transcending what is 'technically correct' - yes, technique  is important too, but we try to bring it from the heart as well.

Music is my outlet. Yours too?

Whatever one's goal is; whether its for fun or to become famous (ummmm, lol), or to feel lost and escape the world of 'reality' for awhile… it is your dream, as long as it is a passion and it remains fun 

Some dear friends on SoundCloud encouraged me to keep going and I also watched some great videos about 'emotional playing' and learning how to relax into one's music without being overly self-critical. What also inspired me, in knowing that I would never become a 'concert great' :-), ... was that some great composers who achieve such passion and connect through 'emotional playing', are also famous for bad technique and playing wrong notes :-)

So - This is my renewed attempts - its a - Megs 'starting' again piece, a WIP [work in progress] and it brought me great comfort to know that I could once again, sit down at the piano and play at least; to rediscover the energy and satisfaction. To learn to be kinder on myself, to be patient and to know that we don't have to be 'perfect'  in creativity

- and most importantly to have fun in doing so! :-)

The success of the previous open collaboration "Moonlight Stroll" was somewhat overwhelming - I did not expect at all anything near those 50 versions that were created based on my original improvisation. Neither did I expect the original track to be played over 60k times and receive over 1000 likes. I've received many questions about when do I plan to initiate another open collaboration but was a little bit scared to do so. 

Anyways, here is the next piano piece of mine for you to remix, also based on Arty's motif.  You may download this file or download the following archive:

that includes both this version and quantized version, named "for remixes" with both WAV and MIDI files. The original track is a free improvisation, played without any click. The "for remixes" version is aligned with 180bpm, so you can apply beats in an easier fashion.

Use your imagination :) You shouldn't follow the original piano as-is but as well can cut parts of the MIDI, leaving some connection to the original, e.g. by incorporating the same motif.

Almost Home

An exploration of the upper end of the piano.  One evening when playing with my new DAW (Pianoteq) I noticed that the upper notes especially sounded very realistic, so decided to turn on record and just play something only using the high notes.  The first time I ran into a snag about a minute in so stopped and started over, and this was the result.  I have to admit that what I recorded is beyond my ability and am still amazed when I listen to this track.

When I was about 12, my dad bought us a Wurlitzer organ that I was immediately drawn to.  I took lessons for a couple of years, and then started playing (for pay!!) at a local church near Eureka, CA.  Then we moved back to Sacramento and I played at a couple of churches there (still getting paid, wow).  Anyway, when I moved to college in Moses Lake, WA, where I still live, there was no organ around but there was a piano.  From that day forth I became a lover of the piano.  I've played on church worship teams for over 30 years, as well as several rock bands, but my real passion is writing music.  I find it fascinating that from 12 different tones, an unlimited amount of music can be written - kind of like snowflakes, or God, even.  Over the last few years I've been influenced greatly by Yanni, as well as Brian Crain, Giovanni, and others.  I write instrumental music, featuring the piano and often supported with strings, etc - plus I get out my bass guitar on some songs.  I hope my music will bring healing and rest to you.  My first album is called "A Time of Refreshing", the second one is "A Time of Hope", the third "A Time of Healing" and the fourth "A Time of Reflection".  They are all available on Amazon, iTunes, CDbaby, etc.  The CD versions have all the final revisions and are also in WAV files which is supposed to be better quality than the MP3.  My current project will be called "A Time of Joy" (seeing a pattern here?).
My lovely wife and I have nine kids (yes, all ours), several of whom have followed me musically and I'm sure will surpass me at some point.  (They just told me they have ALREADY surpassed me......oh well).  We love each other, we love God, and we love music.  I'm thankful for SoundCloud as well.  Have a great day!
