MIMS is extremely excited to premiere the punk and funk edged jazz banger that is "Bloom Anubis" by the Dave De Rose led Agile Experiments.

Dave De Rose has spent years self-releasing solo albums while working for the likes of Moloko, Mark Ronson & Mulatu Astatke. In 2016 he inadvertently formed Agile Experiments, a collective made up of like-minded musicians who would gather to play uninterrupted and entirely improvised one hour concerts in unusual spaces.

Recordings of these quickly turned into a string of acclaimed and collectable vinyl releases featuring some of London and Athens' best improvising musicians. Dave's broad listening tastes however, gave the music a groove and space, distinct from much improvised music.

Inspired by the change in circumstance brought about by the pandemic, for the latest Agile Experiments record, Dave recorded himself, drummer & percussionist Giannis Angelopoulos, and saxophonist Josh Arcoleo, on separate improvisation sessions, before adding further instrumentation and electronic production.

"Bloom Anubis" is the first preview into this brand new sound and the title track of the forthcoming Agile Experiments album. A relentless groove hammered by bass and drums, elevated by Josh Arcoleo’s tenor sax.

MIMS is excited to share the deeply relaxing first single, "willow", from Dave De Rose & Dan Nicholls forthcoming duo album, 'plants heal'. 

Long-time collaborates, from Agile Experiments to Free Movements and Vula Viel, and both MIMS favourites, together they channel ambient, electronic music and electro-acoustic improvisation into trippy new shapes on forthcoming LP, 'plants heal'.

Armed with keyboards, samplers and a drum kit they spent two days immersing themselves into sound with meditative abandonment, capturing their creativity free from categorisation, taping every step taken in their improvisational electro-acoustic playground.

'plants heal' is a small insight into these two days, the 6 tracks on this LP were shortlisted from 27 separately identified pieces of music edited from Dave and Dan's hours of sonic outpourings. The record draws the listener in gently, but with certainty, establishing an immediate setting to ground the connection between human aural senses to the natural world.

These compositions outline an immersive journey of discovery, characterised by generous and contemplative atmospherics amongst spells of exhilarating energy which culminate into a peaceful healing zone.

Lead single “willow” presents a profound mood breathing both darkness and light simultaneously, as is the wonder of life's trials. A hybrid of live drum kit and sampled fingersnaps sets the steady pace as the interplanetary outer-worldly keyboard pads blend with bell textures blending joy with anxiety in a state of acceptance, as life through a healing process necessitates.

This long awaited duo collaboration follows 4 years of complete musical abandonment into free improv with De Rose's Agile Experiments and 3 years of pursuing exploration of their other shared love for techno and dance music during Nicholl's Free Movements nights.

New music today from Agile Experiments, true believers of the freedom principle, who live up to their reputation for having the heaviest abstract grooves on "if you believe”. 

Taken from forthcoming album, ‘These Are Time For Mind And Spirit’, which sees the ever-evolving Agile Experiments return with their sharpest record to date, "if you believe" patiently unravels over a uniquely voiced drum groove building toward ecstatic echo walls of layered saxophone bliss. 

The de facto leader of Agile Experiments, and sole constant, is drummer, bassist and producer, Dave De Rose. Whilst incredibly busy recording and self-releasing albums, he also finds time to record and tour with Gnawa fusionists, Electric Jalaba, and has performed alongside the likes of Mulatu Astatke and Róisín Murphy.

According to Dave De Rose, "this title (if you believe) is stolen from a Meshell Ndegeocello lyric "if you believe that your god is better than another man, how will we end all your suffering?"... I'm often thinking about belief, whether in religious or non religious contexts. I made up my own belief over the years. It's not static belief, it's flexible and evolves with me and my understanding of life as I carry on gaining information. It borrows from old faith systems and mixes them with scientific research not belonging to either. Always open. This track is mysterious, it builds in a subtle, constant manner, small details keep bubbling in showing you a bigger picture before it dissipates. You can pay attention or you can just let it sweep over you, just like life and belief in things we don't understand".

De Rose is joined by Jon Scott (of Go Go Penguin) on drums and George Crowley (of Melt Yourself Down) on saxophone and machines. Together they pursue the perfect meeting point between free improvisation, irresistible groove and enveloping sound. 

‘These Are Time For Mind And Spirit’ is Agile Experiments' 11th release in four years. This fertile communal project continues to proliferate without repeating itself due to its creative methodology, receiving support across BBC Radio 6 Music, The Wire, Jazzwise, Worldwide FM and NTS. 

Agile Experiments is a method of creation rather than a band; The setting of a frame of mind that encourages the musicians to unleash their utmost creativity placing no limit on their imagination. Bassist, drummer and Agile Experiments bandleader Dave De Rose returns with a brand new project for 2023, called Rave At Your Fictional Borders. To introduce the new group, he has shared an exciting video edit capturing a live performance named “National Phantom”, due for release on March 9th.

This video captures a studio session from the Athens-based band’s second recording day, which went down at Electricity Sound Studio in Athens, Greece in January 2023.

The brand new ‘Rave At Your Fictional Borders’ grouping follows a long and impressive run of releases by Dave De Rose’s Agile Experiments. This new project takes inspiration from its predecessor's improvisational and avant-garde approach, but explores new territory by incorporating ambient, noise, and techno elements. This comes at a time when people are increasingly tired of outdated ideas like territorial control and elitist systems.

"National Phantom EP", a two-track release from the second day of recording, is dropping on March 9th, 2023. The EP includes live performance videos and a free digital download. For the vinyl collectors, there's a limited edition 10" lathe cut version, hand-pressed by LoFi Concept. Keep an eye out for more music from the project - the rest of the recordings will be released on their full-length LP in early 2024, along with additional EPs featuring different musicians.

Dave De Rose tells us, “I've been harvesting this project for over two years, some of that just in my head. Last year it finally started to come together while playing a lot with Marius Mathiszik and various combinations of fantastic sound artists in Athens. The project has a more narrow improvisation concept than Agile Experiments, we are blending the realms of dance-inducing repetition with avant-garde, ambient and techno, occasionally dabbling with an aggressive punk edge. It's been a refreshing experience to witness the project's output getting stronger and stronger over the year and just like with Agile Experiments, it's the musicians we've recruited bringing their own flavor to the band's sound that has made it become its own unique blend. Very excited to share these videos and the next 3 releases taking us all the way into 2024!!

While everything around us is constantly being developed to be simpler, smaller, faster and easier to consume, seems as if our obligations are to quite the polar opposite. It's time to bring attention back to bringing attention. 

Currently existing in human format within the boundaries of our understanding, this constantly expanding team of cosmic conglomerate particles will continue to release fresh sound-art until it is no longer able to do so. Agile Experiments recordings will continue to capture live performances featuring artists collaborating with each other and given absolute freedom at creation point. The best moments will continue to emerge during states of unanimous 'flow', when the musicians involved are in sync with each other and not influenced by care or concern regarding the thoughts, feelings and states of mind of the receivers. Ironically this apparent lack of care during the task at hand will continuously prove to be the peak state in which the creators will deliver their most precious gifts to the audience. The listeners will need to commit to the moment to enhance their stake in the performance and reap their reward. The imposed vinyl format will continue to force a process aimed at facilitating this experience. 

Unlike all previous Agile Experiments releases “Alive In The Empire” is a LP of cuts sourced exclusively from one group during a gig - our London Jazz Festival performance November 2019.

MIMS is over the moon to share the unnervingly beautiful sounds of "Self-Acting" by multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer, Dave De Rose. 

"Self-Acting" is taken from De Rose's 9th EP, 'Activate', where we find him uncovering further layers of his deep production and songwriting skills. This time coupling his voice with the lush tones and harmonic orchestrations of rising artist, Jaelee Small (Metronomy, Seb Rochford, Ibibio Sound Machine).

On 'Activate', we find Dave De Rose lyrically pursuing subjects around the active healing and power of meditation, human reliance on material facts, contemplations on self-destruction and an abstract take on the natural course of love. All this playfully coloured by masterful sound craft, original rhythms, and sonic texture amalgamations.

Initial versions of these tracks were composed and produced in an instantaneous, spur of the moment way in the aftermath of the end of a personal relationship which left much space for internal reflection and external contemplation. Conversations with friends, photo, audio exchanges could offset a whole track. 

"Self-Acting" was a combination of all three of these inspirations as a conversation about internal peace and meditation ensued, with friend and collaborator Nefeli Papaioannou. Nefeli messaged Dave her guitar part phone recorded from a beach on the Island of Gavdos (Crete). When prompted for a title she simply replied "Self-Acting". 

Connecting the dots, Dave drew the rest. In addition to Jaelee's vocals the track post-production also features the large and sea-rocking drum kit playing of Jon Scott (Mulatu Astatke, Sons of Kemet). Jon is the first ever drummer to feature playing kit on one of Dave's solo records, since he normally plays all drum parts himself.

An Anglo-Italian multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, educator & sound engineer based in London, Dave De Rose moved to the UK from Rome in 1996 to study Jazz at Guildhall, graduating with distinction & winning their artist development award, whilst working on both live and recordings. 

De Rose has self-released 17 records on his own label (Dave De Rose Records), whilst having toured  & recorded with artists such as Electric Jalaba, Moloko, Roisin Murphy, Bastille, Mark Ronson & The Business International, Mulatu Astatke, Rokia Traore, Jamie Cullum, Scroobius Pip, Raul Monsalve y los Forajidos, Forest Binary, Vula Viel and Trio Trekke. 

De Rose's recent project, Agile Experiments, has caught the imaginations of musicians and the underground experimental jazz community world-wide. Releasing 7 LPs over three years, the project features leading improv and jazz musicians from London and Athens in particular. 

The 'Activate' EP is released on November 20 on digital and an extremely limited edition of 10" lathe cut vinyl records. Just 25!!  Available to pre-order on Bandcamp now!
