The Threshold HouseBoys Choir was a project by Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson. Operating out of Bangkok, Thailand, the Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV founding member started this audio and visual endeavour after Coil’s conclusion.

Despite the name, it was a solo project relying heavily on computer generated vocals. The name was derived from a play on words, combining the terms houseboy, house of boys, boys' choir, and Threshold House, which was Coil’s own label. "Form Grows Rampant" is the soundtrack of a film shot by Christopherson (a video capture at the GinJae Vegetarian Festival in the south of Thailand) and his first major musical project since the tragic death of John Balance and Coil’s subsequent demise.

The music is a suite of lengthy dense atmospherics that combine shuddering electronics with sampled vocals, eerie digitalia, buried melodies and sinister undercurrents hinting at a gleaming heart of darkness, with a joyful melodic progression that sounds positively triumphant towards the end of the album. It's both Coil-esque and quite different, and is undoubtedly the worthy successor of the essential project that Christopherson created with his partner John Balance.

First released in small quantities in 2007 as a mixed CD/DVD set, this is the first time it is released on vinyl, CD, and digital. This reissue has been mastered from original files by Sidney Claire Meyer at former Deutsche Grammophon studios Emil Berliner in Berlin, using the half speed mastering process, and pressed on heavy vinyl at 45 RPM. Limited Edition of 1000. Printed on inside out on heavy 350g cardboard. Gatefold sleeve features stills from the movie in chronological order (Warning: contains explicit graphic images depicting religious devotees in trance-like states, tongue slashing, partial skinning, impaling through cheeks, ears, etc). Includes original liner notes by Peter Christopherson.

Heith’s debut album X,wheel marked the beginning of a long journey, the start to a tortuous exploration of consciousness and spirit. The Liars Tell..., on the other hand, feels like a kind of respite, a moment of meditation and pause from the fatigue of dimension-hopping. As if the traveller dismounted their carriage and, standing puzzled on a crossroad, listened to the echoes of distant places. Occupying a liminal space and letting thousand of contradictory tales form the lyrics to one unfathomable song.

This EP’s emphasis on the singing voice is itself not casual, but the focal point of a research on language and words, from their uncanny worlding power to their ultimate failure to deliver universally accessible truths. The human voice is treated as the most fragile of instruments, a spectral presence aided into matter by technology. The tonally ambiguous beauty in Heith’s processed singing stands to imitate the immanent wisdom of sacral inspiration while simultaneously belonging to a sketchy trickster. A divine liar is whispering into the ears of the somnambulist, instigating dangerous temptations of knowledge.

The delicate shanty at the core of “<>e” conducts slowly from a shiny synth desert to a cascade of arpeggiated instruments to, finally, a contained eruption of percussion and noise, all while never losing its hypnotic sense of caution. INVERTED VERTIGO’s slow rising chords, prolonged whispers and lamenting flutes feel like a soul trembling to detach from a state of static plenitude, fevering to plunge into the abstract tumult of it conclusion. Similarly, the minimal, stretchy melody of “medicine boy/3cate” gives the vocals the space to alternatively fragment and multiply, only to then coalesce again into one choral force, ultimately giving space to a discharge of broken guitar strings. Closer “The Circus Lodge (Orchestroll Version)” is a mirrored reversion and an addendum to X, Wheel ’s “A Venus Flytrap In The Circus Lodge”, initially riding on the back of a reverb- drenched crescendo to a melancholic slow burn of electronic reeds.

This all makes The Liars Tell...a crucial point into Heith’s evolution, influenced by two years of increasingly ambitious live performances and by the relentless wanderings of an uncompromisingly creative mind.

Multivocal is a polyphonic maze that unfolds to both the body and the mind. A generative take on rhythm and spacial perception, it presents the same events in different configurations. 

The two pieces of the album, "Solid of Revolution" and "Never Odd or Even", mirror each other with the same principle in different musical scales: steady pulses with one millisecond difference in tempo start beating together, then slowly phase organically and progress into ever-changing rhythmic patterns until they finally return to unison. 

Multivocal emphasizes shifts of attention in the listener’s experience and plays with the expectations that frame it. Originally conceived for quadraphonic sound, the pieces reveal the many different aspects and modes of perception that can arise within the same sequence of notes. In this way Multivocal is influenced by concepts of gestalt psychology such as multistable perception - a term describing ambiguous patterns that offer multiple interpretations at once. The minimalism and repetitive quality of the music also refers to trance-inducing and collective music practices, driven by the strong bodily affects induced through the use of rhythms.

Those two compositions were recorded live during Ars Electronica 2018 at the occasion of the sleeping event « Sonatas for Sleep/less », curated by multimedia artist Shu Lea Cheang and cultural theorist Matthew Fuller.
