As a sequel to the repress of mythic record "Dou Van Jou" by parisian-guadeloupean artist Jimmy Blanche, Stima Records is dropping remixes made out of 80's multitrack tape recordings given by Jimmy himself.
On remix duties you'll find great names of the french party scene: Mawimbi, Pardonnez-nous, Aurèle, Kobald, M.Baba and Baerlz.
For this track, Aurèle (of Cracki Records, Demi-Monde, D.KO...) took some bass & vocal parts of "Pep Antillais", a song celebrating caribbean people, to make an energetic electronic track, flirting with some heavy UK influences...
The physical release includes these 6 remixes and will be a limited 100 copies white label vinyl.
The digital release also includes two exclusive original songs.

PREMIERE: Jimmy Blanche - Pep Antillais (Aurèle Remix) [Stima Records]

A heavy gust of wind rustled the pages of his notepad spoiling the ink he'd penned moments ago. He'd been pouring over these notes for as long as he could remember; it controlled his life, his every waking moment. From morning to night he thought about how he'd morph these ramblings into something cohesive, a novel that stirred the same emotions in the reader as it had claimed from him during its creation. But writers block always reared its head, the invisible enemy of every wordsmith.

In October last year, Paris-based label Stima Records revisited the work of Guadeloupean-Parisian artist and cultural activist Jimmy Blanche, more specifically his 1987 release 'Dou Van Jou', which had remained shrouded in mystery for years. As an appendix to the release, the label have gathered close friends and affiliates, including Mawimbi, Aurèle, M.Baba and Pardonnez-nous, to reimagine Blanche's original melange of traditional gwoka, jazz and synth.

Today, we are celebrating the companion release to our next archival reissue, 'Tsonga Tremors: Remixes', which landed this past Friday (June 4th).

This precedes the release of our next reissue proper, the compilation 'Tsonga Tremors: Explorations in Tradition, Technology & South African Dance Music (1983-1991).'

We are presenting this reissue compilation featuring early Shangaan-influenced dance music from legendary producers Paul Ndlovu, Thomas Chauke and Richard Siluma alongside lesser-known Tsonga Disco and neo-traditional rarities from South Africa (1983-1991). The compilation will drop digitally on July 2nd - and physically on Sep 1st.

This first series of remixes from the 'Tsonga Tremors' compilation is spearheaded by three acclaimed producers -  two of which join us today and provide our sixteenth guest mix selection - the aforementioned duo are @monsieurbaba and @djturboboomboom, who together run the new Parisian label Stima Records (@stimarecords).

Their first release as Stima presents a selection of studio-slick and unfamiliar 1980s Guadeloupean-Parisian misses from Jimmy Blanche alongside a companion piece of remixes and edits – from keyboard-drenched sunshine electro-gwoka to yacht-ready synth groovers, no-frills boogie dubs and the syncretic, joyous bricolage that has been a defining feature of so much salsa and disco music. An expertly crafted insider selection of high-gloss oddities and tropical pop misfires.

Their guest mix follows suit - it’s questing music, and there is no mistaking the sense that a complex, untested set of sounds is being thoughtfully glued together from well-loved fragments of the past – always intriguing and frequently surprising – their selection displays a compulsive interest in rhythm that allows even the most curious explorations to return with engaging, accessible sonic artefacts to marvel at.

It is no secret that Montreal had a bubbly disco scene, but there are still some under-the-radar gems. Sophie Stanké is one of them. The charismatic Quebec-Lithuanian actress, radio host and singer hung around with some of the hippest disco people of the 80s, and worked on the sexy boogie song "L'amour d'une diva" with no other than Geraldine Hunt. Scandalous at the time, it became a local disco hit. Famous french singer Daniel Guichard noticed her and signed the song – slightly rearranged – in France on his label Kuklos. Here is the rarest original Canadian arrangement that Stima reissued, in all its glory: long and instrumental versions.

The other side includes the more obscure and even more erotic "J'adore". It was issued in 1987 under her first name, Sophie, with synth-pop and new wave influence. An instrumental was missing, thus Baerlz delivers a new dub cover and now each song has also its “version”, in the purest 80s 12 inches tradition.

After ten years spent in France, where she worked with another star singer Nicolas Peyrac, Sophie is now still active in Québec's cultural life. Stima is proud to have her permission to reissue these 2 fresh 80s tracks to hit the modern dancefloors.

Dou Van Jou is one of these mysterious and rare records that deserve to be (re)discovered, as an image of a time when modernity and tradition were brilliantly mixed in the mind of a guadeloupean-parisian artist. Recorded in 1987, it showcases an original fusion of gwoka, world music, jazz and enthusiastic use of synths. Some songs reached a cult status in the underground: « Misik A Moun A Kaz », a blend of gwoka mendé rhythm, salsa piano and disco bass, was played by Emil Omar and in Airbaer’s Boiler Room set. The pure traditional gwoka « Tambou La & Ti Bois La » became a hit in the Paris-region léwoz, the music and dance events of guadeloupean tradition, that directly come from the Neg Marrons.

A true cultural activist, Jimmy Blanche organized lots of concerts on the parisian scene, as programmer of La Chapelle des Lombards or at the New Morning. He worked with the gwoka legend Guy Konket and with the huge Manu Dibango, but also (and it’s not a surprise when you know how creative and open is Jimmy’s mind) with Eric Serra. He incidentally played a role with the latter in cult Luc Besson’s film Subway.

We’re happy and proud to have Jimmy’s permission to make available again four of the most danceable and spiritual songs of the album.

Side A of STIMA001 includes 4 tracks of the original 1987 album, with the hot dancefloor number “Misik A Moun A Kaz”, the gwoka hit “Tambou La & Ti Bois La“, and two beautiful spiritual songs, the poetic “La Nou Te Ye“ and the
gwoka jazzy “Dou Van Jou“. Side B contains Baerlz’s housy remix of “Misik” and the unreleased song “Kimbe” that Jimmy kindly gave us from his private tape recordings made in the 80’s.

Dou Van Jou est de ces disques mystérieux et rares qui méritent d’être (re)découverts, image d’une époque où modernité et tradition se mêlaient dans l’esprit bouillonnant d’un artiste multifacette parisien d’origine guadeloupéenne. Enregistré en 1987, il fait entendre une fusion originale entre gwoka, musiques du monde, jazz et usage enthousiaste de synthétiseurs. Bien que diffusés de façon intimiste, certains morceaux ont acquis le statut d’oeuvre culte : “Misik A Moun A Kaz”, avec son rythme gwoka mendé, ses pianos salsa et sa basse disco, a été joué par Emil Omar ou encore Air Baer dans son Boiler Room. “Tambou La & Ti Bois La”, dans la pure tradition gwoka, est devenu un tube souvent chanté dans les léwoz d’Ile-de-France, ces rencontres musicales et dansantes de la tradition guadeloupéennes, héritées des Neg Marrons.

Véritable activiste culturel et insatiable voyageur, Jimmy Blanche a organisé de nombreux concerts, travaillé avec la légende gwoka Guy Konket, l’immense Manu Dibango, ou encore (et ça n’est pas si surprenant quand on connaît la créativité et l’ouverture d’esprit de Jimmy) avec Eric Serra. Il joue d’ailleurs avec ce dernier dans le cultissime Subway de Luc Besson. Sa volonté de partager la culture au sens large l’a également amené à ouvrir un restaurant à Paris.

C’est avec joie et fierté que nous avons reçu l’aimable autorisation de Jimmy de rendre disponible à nouveau quatre des chansons les plus dansantes et spirituelles de l’album, avec en bonus un remix de Baerlz qui lorgne vers la deep house tout en gardant l’esprit gwoka fusion de “Misik A Moun A Kaz”, ainsi qu’un titre inédit que Jimmy a retrouvé parmi ses bandes enregistrées dans les années 1980.

La face A de STIMA001 inclut 4 titres de l’album original de 1987, avec la bombe dancefloor “Misik A Moun A Kaz”, le tube gwoka “Tambou La & Ti Bois La“, et deux chansons plus calmes, le poétique “La Nou Te Ye“ et le morceau gwoka jazzy “Dou Van Jou“.
