Things We Talked About In This Episode of Sound Advice
A New Era of Myd, From Hosting Viral Parties to Writing His New Album, ‘Mydnight’
- We begin our conversation by hearing about Myd’s latest live music endeavor, where he threw together a spontaneous party in Los Angeles with the streetwear brand Pizza Slime. Myd is known to his fans for his inventive ways of interacting with them, and this event was a playful evolution of just that. Putting together this party from scratch in 12 hours, he also live streamed on the internet throughout. Myd talks about bringing the different elements of the party together, from the line-up and venue, to more ad hoc elements like a cartoon mascot and an on-site chef, and why doing a party this way feels special and contemporary to him.
- After three years of touring as a DJ and live performer, the French artist returns with ‘Mydnight,’ his latest album. Here, he talks about how some advice from legendary Parisian electronic artist Thomas Bangalter, of Daft Punk, influenced not only the making of ‘Mydnight,’ but Myd’s artistry going forward.
- In conversation with Bangalter, he latched onto some sage advice: “Don’t worry too much, and start doing automatic writing,” Myd says. Here, he explains what Bangalter meant by “automatic writing,” how it influenced Myd’s approach to studio sessions, including those for ‘Mydnight.’
- As Myd tells it, the sound of ‘Mydnight’ is more indebted to the club than his 2021 debut album, ‘Born A Loser,’ and subsequent EPs and singles. Most overtly, he’s made a confident shift from an indie dance, lo-fi guitar-driven sound towards a sweatier, faster and more pumping dance style that’s connected to French touch, French pop and filter house music. Here, Myd talks about tapping into his musical heritage and why he was drawn to making more club-focused tracks.
Sharing Creative Wisdom From Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk and Busy P of Ed Banger Records
- Someone who’s played a big role in Myd’s creative life is Busy P, aka Pedro Winter, the former manager of Daft Punk and the figurehead of Ed Banger Records, the iconoclastic Parisian electronic label that brought artists like Justice, Cassius and the late DJ Mehdi to broader audiences. Here, Myd gets into more details about the influence that Pedro has had on him, and how his connection to Ed Banger has given him more creative confidence.
- When Myd started out in music, he was part of a collective called Club Cheval, which focused on experimental electronic music with conceptual releases. Reflecting on his artistic growth, Myd sees a pattern that chimes with the advice that Thomas Bangalter and Pedro Winter have given him — don’t try to conceptualize your music too much, because you’ll end up losing touch with your true emotions and your reasons for making music in the first place.
- This lesson came into focus for Myd when he made his breakthrough track “The Sun.” Here, he talks about why this was such an important moment for him, and how Pedro’s advice allows him to present the track authentically.
- On ‘Mydnight,’ Myd explores many different influences, from French touch to lo-fi guitar music — so what’s the connective tissue between it all that feels personal to Myd? Here, he talks about the kinds of chords and melodies that he likes to hone in on, the mixing of major and minor keys in a chord progression as a way to open up deeper emotions in a track, and how artists like ‘70s pop star Michel Berger, folk artists like Elliott Smith and indie acts like Sufjan Stevens and Mac DeMarco have inspired him. All told, it’s all about warmth and comfort for Myd.
Myd’s Artistic Growth in The Studio, How to Keep Sessions Fun and Using Social Media
- Over the last few years, Myd has grown into his studio sessions and abilities as a producer — and has come to appreciate how important building up a good energy in the studio is for music-making. Tapping into his silly, youthful side, one of his studio tricks is having a trunk of costumes for artists to dress up in for sessions. Myd talks about why he has this, what it achieves for a collaboration and the value of letting your guard down in a creative moment.
- He also talks about some of his recent studio favorites, from the brand of speakers he uses to how he burns incense to create a relaxing vibe. For Myd, you can spend a small fortune on technical equipment, but it’s the environment itself that really facilitates great music-making.
- Once Myd set up his studio to his liking, he reflects on how he knew he wanted to share moments from his day-to-day experiences as an artist more widely. When he lost a hard drive of album material only days from final delivery, he knew he had to push himself to finish the music. As a motivating element, he set up five cameras in his studio — which ran 24 hours a day, for one week — and livestreamed that process. Here, Myd talks about why he did it, how he likes to connect to his audience and why the social element of music-making is important to him.
- Myd has infused his music, artwork, live performances and social media presence with a fun-loving energy and self-awareness that seems naturalistic and contemporary to today’s very online ways of living. Here, Myd talks about how he likes to frame himself online and, as a naturally shy person, where he gets his confidence from. For him, it comes down to feeling comfortable; that “it’s only awkward if you’re being filmed doing stuff you don’t enjoy,” so broadcast what you love doing creatively and your audience will connect more deeply with you and your work.
The Making of New Track “Song for You” and Using Field Recordings to Soften His Dance Music Sound
- On ‘Mydnight,’ Myd experiments with new machines, techniques and sounds. Here, he goes into detail about the making of his summertime track “Song for You,” from the compression techniques that allowed him to tap into a ‘90s French touch feel, the very meta message of the song’s lyrics and title, and the process of finding the perfect choir of Motown-influenced singers to bring the melodies and harmonies to life.
- As a lover of club music who wanted to tap into that dancefloor energy on ‘Mydnight,’ the DJ/producer recognized that dance music can often feel a little too tough, cold or unemotive. As a workaround for that, Myd wanted to inject more idiosyncratic elements that would surprise the listener and give a sweetness to the music that wouldn’t necessarily come from drum machines or digital software. Here, Myd talks about how he achieves this softness through field recordings that he collected over the past few years of touring, and how bird song in particular brings a warm sweetness to the mix of ‘Mydnight.’
Myd’s Journey on SoundCloud as a DJ and Producer
- On SoundCloud, Myd has shared his journey as a DJ and performer, uploading live recordings of his DJ sets and live shows, and as a producer, with his original music and collaborations. Now, with the release of ‘Mydnight,’ he’s showcasing his latest sound to a devoted fanbase who has been with him since he first joined SoundCloud, back in 2009.
- Here, Myd looks back on his SoundCloud journey, and how the experience of uploading his first track in those early days was a formative one. For Myd, being able to share your music directly and simply is “a great first step in being an artist.”
- Today, Myd also uses SoundCloud for music discovery and planning his DJ sets. He talks about the process of searching for special edits, remixes and other tracks that “you can’t find anywhere else” but on SoundCloud.
What’s Next for Myd in 2025, From Touring to More Creative Freedom
- With the release of ‘Mydnight,’ Myd is looking forward to hitting the road; in smaller clubs, as a DJ, and in larger venues and at festivals, with a live performance. So what can fans expect from these shows in 2025? Here, Myd goes into more detail about the show, how the use of cameras and video screens will amplify the music’s themes and the physicality of the performance, and what to expect in terms of exclusive edits, remixes and more.
- Looking back on the last few years of his career, Myd ends our conversation with some wise words for fellow artists — focus on the music, even though it can be tough to realize and finish those ideas, because everything else you do, from social media to music videos, is in support of the music itself. And don’t worry about making mistakes, either, because a faithful audience can be more generous to you than you think. “Go with your gut and don’t be afraid,” he says.
