Relax Trax: Ride the #Wave

Escape the high summer heat and cool down with a collection of relaxation-inducing tracks spanning the spectrum of electronic subgenres. From deep house and trip-hop to chillout and ambient, with indie, pop, R&B and jazz influences, there’s much to discover and vibe out to on SoundCloud.

Since the “wave” movement started to bubble up in the late aughts, SoundCloud has been a home to the chillwave, vaporwave and synthwave subgenres, ignited by London-based producer Klimeks’ use of the #wave tag in 2012. Since then, wave has permeated pop culture through films like Cliff Martinez’s “Drive” soundtrack, Blood Orange’s “Palo Alto” soundtrack and gaming soundtracks including “Grand Theft Auto V,” “Crossing Souls” and “VA-11 HALL-A.” The evolving spectrum of wave genres seamlessly incorporate elements of hip-hop, shoegaze, bedroom pop, grime, synth-pop, trip-hop, jungle, ambient and more, attracting a wide audience of electronic music fans and beyond.

While leaders in this space such as vaporwave kingpin George Clanton continue to loom large on the scene with constant touring, other mainstays like Toro y Moi, Neon Indian and Washed Out continue to drop chillwave gems to drift away to. While steadily rising artists like NYC’s Blonde Maze and Richmond, Virginia-based FM Skyline are establishing themselves with innovative chill-inspired drops. So now, lean back and enjoy the relaxing vibes, courtesy of Yo La Tengo, Erika de Casier, Tycho, Maribou State and more.
