As artists push the boundaries of electronic music, new techniques inevitably emerge. Sometimes the experimental nature of applying effects can lead to breakout moments in which this new sound takes on a life of its own. Take stutter house – considered by some to be a subgenre in its own right, while others consider it another production tool. The movement has continued to gain movement at festivals and dance floors across the globe.
We’ve seen players in the deep house and techno scene lean into the stutter technique: SILK, for instance, organically blending his atmospheric sounds with a pulsating glitch layer, resulting in the club banger “Quiver.” Global superstar duo ODESZA, who put themselves on the map with an ascending blend of electropop and chillwave dove in early on, and more recently produced the festival-ready “The Last Goodbye” with the ethereal vocals of the legendary Bettye LaVette. German DJ BUNT., known for his innovative blend of folk and electronic, has masterfully brought the technique to the forefront with tracks including “Clouds” and “Lost My Mind” (which also features the adjacent phenomenon of sped-up vocals).
While house music has seen elements of the stutter effect in crossover tracks going back to Daft Punk’s “Face to Face” and “Too Long” in the ‘90s, as well as the glitchy beats on Justice’s “DVNO,” in the aughts, to name a few, no artist has brought it to the masses quite as prominently as the way Fred again… has. The red hot London producer, currently filling arenas across the world, honed his skills in the studio with artists ranging from Ed Sheeran to Clean Bandit. Tracks like “Danielle (smile on my face)” and “Turn On The Lights again..,” his collab with Swedish House Mafia, have elevated stutter house onto the global stage. SoundCloud has been a launching pad for many of the tracks that laid the foundation for a sound that’s been lighting up dance floors. We’ve compiled a collection of scintillating stutter tracks that would sync beautifully with the strobe light in your favorite club, updated with recent heaters from KREAM, Sonny Fodera, Le Youth and more to keep you moving through festival season.
