Tom Jay, a man known to his nearest and dearest affectionately as Noel’ (for his likeness to UK national household name and official game host of Deal or No Deal, Mr Noel Edmonds) steps up for a 2 hour mix. 

Raised on the outskirts of London to a home of a teaching mother and driving instructing Father, Noel had to look beyond his Dad’s glove box for musical inspiration. If you know the man’s sound, then you’re in for a treat, if you don’t know the man’s sound, then you’re in for a pleasant surprise, and then a treat. Quite frankly we’d question where you had been over the last couple of months if you’re in the latter camp - the floor heater ‘La Belle’ (horrific phrase but honestly the only way to describe a tune which is so soulful and floor focussed) has been doing the rounds for quite some time, mustering some serious support from the Steel City Dance Discs crew on its way, and is out on Axe On Wax on 5th November.

The mix glides from box to box, contestant to contestant, west wing to east wing, with consummate ease. We think that Tom may know more groove than the original Edmonds’ knows about the banker, as this mix starts off early rounds of Deal or No Deal, then goes Noel’s house party, and ends with pulling the red tab from a quarter million pound box. 

If you like what you hear, Tom is playing the Horse and Groom, London this Friday (19th October). If you prefer staying in and listening to Tom Jay tunes, no fear - he has a new release up and coming on Krywald and Farrers' label, and two more 12’s on Esuoh Ltd in 2019.

Swales undoubtedly falls within these high-potential dudes we’ve been following closely since their early stages as we fell in love at first sight with his heady house tune ‘From Tokyo’ three years ago. The Manchester-based taste-maker embodies an idiosyncratic type of house that sounds both funky and euphonious, and gives a particular relish making it its hobbyhorse when it comes to production, always bearing in mind 90s inspired cuts. The purveyor of modernistic beats has recently gained ground in constantly rising record labels like Dansu Discs or SlothBoogie, releasing a myriad of gritty and unctuous nu-disco-infused bangers. Having already smoothly supported leading house names such as Big Miz or DJ Boring, and having freshly launched his own label Rhythm Department Records, we bet our bottom dollar that 2020 will be a key success story for him.

Today, he takes us on a tour of his city and turns in an hour of intimate and exquisite house jams from DJ Spen, DJ Technic and Blaze, to name but three. This is an essential reminder of how proficient is the guy when it comes to selecting and pairing up house tunes with mastery.

We had a chat with James below:

What’s been your favourite gig to play?

My favourite gig has to be playing at a warehouse party in Los Angeles. The whole experience was amazing. Special shout out to the guys at 900 block for booking me and making me feel so welcome when I arrived. They are some of the most passionate promoters I have met and look forward to (hopefully) one day returning. 

Who are your biggest influences? 

If you know me or have listened to my mixes/recent tracks then you’ll know that I’m a sucker for that old school house sound. Pretty much anything stretching from the very origins of house to the early noughties. Artists like Grant Nelson, Inner Sense and Joey Musaphia have all inspired the sound that I’m working towards. 

Top tips for creativity in the studio? 

I’ve recently purchased an MPC 2000XL which is a dream. Don’t get me wrong the technology is dated (you have to load samples to a floppy disk drive) but being able to separate myself from the laptop and be physically able to punch in some beats is refreshing. It’s helped me come up with ideas that would never have materialised if I was still staring at a screen. 

Whilst I know that an MPC might not be in everyone’s price range there are definitely a number of cheaper alternatives to take at least part of your workflow away from the computer screen. Highly recommended. 


What track is your guilty pleasure?

Sonique - ‘It feels so good’ 

An absolute stone cold classic with a couple of decent remixes knocking about. Maybe a little bit cheesy but definitely can get people moving if used at the right time.
