Strøm Mixx 010: N.E.GIRL

N.E.GIRL is the guise of London-bred, Copenhagen-based DJ, producer and promoter Esther Wanyama. She might have upped sticks and moved out to Denmark but her UK roots are still ever-present in her musical output. A lover of all things bass, and driven by a passion for UK sound system and underground club culture, these influences feed heavily into Esther's DJ sets which are full of dark weighty electronics to move your body. 

Formerly working as part of Copenhagen-based music label Solumn Records, now you'll find her manoeuvring behind the scenes at Christiania venue Music Loppen, while also putting on her own parties in the city: Afro-Swing and Jasho Club. 

Back on London soil, she's a resident for collective and party series Co-select - alongside Airali, Will Hofbauer, TSUNIMAN and many more - who advocate for equality and balanced representation on DJ lineups.

She steps up for this week's 'Shine A Light On' Mix to take us on a sludgy ride through deep bass, UK techno and jungle. Let's go...

controlled chaos is a key element in my practice. in this mix, things get dialed up a notch. while spiraling, time seemed to go much slower while recording!
making use of intuitive, rapid mixing and flexible shifts in tempo and genre.
the sounds in my minted chaos mix explore the complete spectrum of chaotic good, neutral and evil - illustrated through the selections and their handling.
recorded on a pioneer xdj-rx controller, and madly manipulating just a few parameters.. tracks are handled with an appropriate level of recklessness in each section.
tightly contracting and rapidly accelerating tracks seemed to unleash their most chaotic inertial potential.

one of the transitory points between themes are marked by flowing water. these are recordings from years back.. i swear in that moment i was fascinated by the chaotic potential of water.. here recognizing its potential as an instrument. (i'd eventually make a whole 'liquindi-techno' track which did not make it into the mix)
water is the key of life but under the right set of influences can destroy cities.
drawn to ebb and flow by the moon.. when i felt myself get too calm as a lake i'd take the mix in the direction to be wild as a river.

Amorphous and adaptable, quest?onmarq is a sonic and physical shapeshifter channeling sounds from all corners of the global underground.
When guiding the vibration of the room, the ‘spiral effect’ takes place — a collective state of inhibitory submission by way of frequency manipulation often in the form of genre defiant DJ set performances that incorporate turntablism, sharp technical prowess and their own productions and remixes. They can be heard monthly as a bi-monthly fixture presenting mixes and guest features on Paris’ arm of Rinse.FM as well as a monthly resident, producing audio-visual mixes on New York’s The Lot Radio.

Episode 479 brings us one helluva mix from the one like N.E. GIRL! Iv'e been wanting to get her on for some time, she has excellent selection and this mix, like past mixes of hers has an unbelievable vibe!

N.E. Girl's mix starts out with a beautiful atmospheric tune and then things get rowdy with amen pressure and a ting of dark steppers on the back end! This mix is runnin, she murders this one!

Let's get to know our dj for episode 479, N.E. Girl, 3 questions coming at ya:

1. Tell us about your nirvana moment as a dj, perfect venue, set, and vibe:
Playing at Rupture London this year!

Being able to play alongside legends and artists I admire who play regularly was a huge highlight in one of my favorite venues (Corsica Studios). It also inspired me to dig a bit deeper but also challenge myself by challenging expectations of what I should play during the night - so I ended my set with Steppers and dubstep on a system that could handle the pressure weight.

2. Tell us about exciting upcoming gigs and projects.

I'm playing alongside Mala (Digital Mystiks) and Chase and Status next year in Copenhagen. Both legends in their scene. Im excited to get back into 140 and dig into Dubstep again. 

Otherwise, look out for the Strom festival 2023, I’m on the curating team, so I’m looking forward to suggesting some alternative bookings to the program.

3. Tell us about your strangest and or funniest experience as a Dj.

During a night, I had a guy come up to me with his usb asking if he could go b2b because he plays footwork too. jokes.
