STR04 - Stroef - Mix for Walverdene (MAA redone)

This is a live recording, captured at Ego club in Düsseldorf, June 5 1999.  The music has been created with a self written step sequencer, the PX-18, controlling  a basic sample player and effects engine, all done in MaxMSP, running on a Powerbook G3. The step sequencer had some unique features, e.g. the ability to switch patterns independently in each track, which later became an important part of a certain music software.

I found the recording on a backup disk today. It has not been edited or mastered. During the first 20 minutes of the set, and before the 'encore' the Monolake CD 'Gobi' is playing in the background.

"Earth Tones 2" is a bumpin' blipped-out dark house jam that takes us back to the ominous vibe of the original Earth Tones, but this time with an erie & forbidding motive. It has been described as "falling backwards hopelessly into space-time". Let yourself drift.

Next, we land on planet "Goopymain". The surface is sticky, and its environment comprised of tightly arranged staccato rhythms. Are those aliens farting in the distance? We aren't sure either... just try not to piss them off.

Closing our journey is "Baby Cakes"; but don't let the name fool you, there is nothing sweet here. Huge kicks, stripped back arrangement and bellowing squelches make "Baby Cakes" the perfect 4AM warehouse/space cave slapper.

A few years ago I recorded a tribute set to my alltime favorite artist: Jeff Mills. I never was really happy with the result and the sound quality was pretty poor too. 

So I recorded a new Jef Mills set with Mills tracks I had never used before. That it self was quite a challenge, since my STR series have over 100 Mills tracks in the tracklists (I think I've used Step to Enchantment for instance - my absolute alltime favorite techno track - at least three times).

His tracks need no introduction. His sets and mixing style has greatly influenced my mixing and that of many others. I tried to keep up the good old Mills mixing pace, resulting in 63 tracks in less than two hours, something I've never accomplished before :).

Hopefully you will enjoy this mix as much as I enjoyed recording it.

I Love Techno 2012 (Exclusive)

Round about 2005 I recorded the first 'Space warfare' mix, which was a pretty boring short mix. I decided to redo it and use its most prominent track the quite notorious Phil Kieran remix of Nitzer Ebbs Murderous. I decided to remove a few of the original tracks and refill it with unused B-sides. Whole mix is vinyl only, so some cracks and clicks are to be expected.

A long time ago, when I only just was working with three decks, I recorded a very dark mix called 'A different dimension'. Although the tracklist in my opinion was great, the mixing wasn't. I have always wanted to redo it and add some more tracks. As I waited for my new delivery in records this week I decided to make the overall tone of the set lighter and the set much longer. 

The result is a non-stop trip down the memory lane of techno as we knew it eight or nine years ago.

A label where he releases his own work but also techno tracks from friends and kindred spirits.

Stroef is an Amsterdam based techno dj and producer. Primary influences are Jeff Mills' legendary Tokyo Liquidroom 1995 set and Surgeon's 'Force + Form' album. Later on harder techno sets like High Heel Techno by Dylan Drazen but also his more deep house oriented sets like 'Carry on' and 'Caught in The Act'. It showed him he wanted to play different kinds of techno, from Detroit to dub techno and electro. 

In 2002 he bought his first two decks and since 2005 he has been mixing with three turntables ever since. His mixing style can be described as fast and progressive: often starting out slow and ending harder. He always tries to tell his listeners a story. 

He was also Question clubnight (R.I.P.) resident and and fellow organiser.
