We are thrilled to present the long-awaited return of Alter Echo & E3.  These are genre-defying tracks of immense power, depth, and detail, steeped in sound system mythologies while staking a claim to a piece of the unwritten future. This is a sonic world where dub effects feel sentient - echoes and reverbs spin DNA through their chains, creating alien flora and fauna as they go. Studio kinda cloudy, yes, with strange gasses and vapor suffusing the herb smoke.

Nubian Dub is a stripped, anthemic 140-dub tune that pummels with space and rocks with spectral energies.  A rough dubplate mix of the track circulated amongst a lucky few last year.  Lost for a time in a badman version excursion, Alter Echo emerged and the finished mix is now ready to reveal.  A haunting 'oud figure floats above the bedrock of a massive half-step riddim, while shards of percussion, voice, test tone, and effects that seem to breathe swirl in the space between them.   

Warning dub’s bunker-busting riddim is dragged along by a mutant Jammy-style bassline that lurches and blasts into unheard territories, parting thick, alien atmospheres with relentless fader-rocking forward motion.  Fevered cyborg consciousness, half-mulched sound-system tapes, desert flutes, and strange feral things just out of sight… Warning is both an existential reminder that in this life “anything can happen…” and a classic soundboy-challenge to any that might try to test this behemoth of a sound.

Alter Echo AKA Josh Derry, has spent the last decade and a half working as a dub scientist of the highest order. Through his collaborations with DJ Spooky, Lee Perry, Mad Professor, Scientist, Twilight Circus and countless others, he has often worked as the Hidden Hand, perfecting and alloying disparate materials into wholly new dub forms. Alongside E3, he was one of the founders of BSI Records, and has released on labels including M Records, Six Degrees, Thirsty Ear, Sub Rosa, and Bangarang. E3 (AKA Ezra E. Ereckson) is a founding member of agit-dub band Systemwide, was the head of BSI, and now runs ZamZam Sounds alongside Tracy Harrison. E3 has been a vinyl archaeologist for 25 years.

Crafted over the course of two years, this album explores various styles and structures, focusing on off-kilter rhythms, haunting modalities, a strong use of organic, found-sound and ethereal vocal explorations to create an otherworldly vibe.

Conceptually, the album is about self/collective discovery, light found within darkness, numinous experience, secrets, and the process of inward/outward illumination.

New Zealand's Harry Bretherton, known in the realm of electronic music as Organikismness, has been around the block. And not just once; the artist has been building an almost encyclopedic catalog of tunes for almost a decade. Organikismness isn’t afraid to experiment - he’s conquered a massive range of tempos and has proven time and time again his prowess in composing both original music and stellar remixes. Drum & Bass and Dubstep were clearly very influential to his palate of the deep, dark, and mysterious, and now he’s returned as ISM with 7 symphonic selections entitled “Electric Dread LP.”

The concept of the aptly named LP represents the seamless interconnectivity of electronic music and dub/reggae vibes and culture. The first four tracks of the project are Dubstep - strictly that deep 140 that instantly puts you in a dark room, slithering on cold concrete. The opening track, “Electric Dread (Naza Vibes)” begins with a quote from an insightful Jamaican man, and sets the tone for the dubbed out, eerie album. Then the bombastic bass and wonky rhythmic percussion creeps on in and the mean mug comes out to play. “Badoozy”’s off-kilter wobble will have you sittin’ sideways, while “Babylon”’s ethereal synth work and spooky vocal samples in the beginning predict a slightly different outcome - we’re treated to an aggressively soothing bassline and the crisp clicks of ISM’s complex drum patterns. The latter half of the album is a journey through Drum & Bass. The refrain of the percussion in “Mercy” pairs excellently with ISM’s voluminously viscous vibrations, and the closing track, “Dreadnaughtus” is a glitch-ridden half-time banger that knocks the cerebellum with furious fervor. 

“Electric Dread,” in the end, is a spectacular showcase of Organikismness’ boisterous bass bombs, and a solid testament to his competence and mastery of dancefloor bass music production. Equally appropriate in a dark bedroom or in a dimly-lit club, this shit will make you gyrate your pelvis, sway your hips and do the damn thing.

"I think both tunes come at a point in my life when I was forced to accept the idea of working for the capitalist society. At the moment by being a teacher for the French state, which is something that goes at the opposite of my view of what real knowledge is and how education should be lead for children's life, and at the extent, adult's life (knowing should lead to doing.) I try to conciliate my own thoughts and vision of the world with State’s schools, which are places where most indoctrinate the youth with the capitalist ideology (and the neoliberal doctrine), or a place of “miseducation”, as Malcolm X expressed in his own time.

So 'Prone' is about being forced to incline to a higher power. But there's a duality because you could prone for the capitalist and dominant society, but you can also decide to fight against this ideology, which lead 'Prone' to also be understood as some kind of predisposition (the “artistic destiny” in art’s aesthetic) of some people in every society, a group of individuals than can and will deconstruct traditions and ordinary views of the majority in order to achieve, for humankind and/or themselves, a greater view, a greater purpose and a greater meaning to life than just being a tool in the Machine.”





In regards to Active Sleep, I wanted to express the idea that when I'm out of my little bubble (alone or with like-minded people), I feel kind of trapped in a society I can't accept as it is, surrounded by people that think too differently (which as, for me at least, a lot to do with the power of capitalist's ideology). So when I have to go out of that bubble, for example by going to work, I'm in some kind of 'active sleep', I'm some sort of ghost, just here pretending I'm the same as people around (but they and I both know it's not really the case). I want to be that ghost to protect myself, and I'm pretending to act normal but deep inside I’m fighting against the structure I'm in and the people that decided to accept that structure for what it is (so basically not changing anything in that structure and in themselves). I'm sleeping with those people because they aren't giving good food to my brain; I'm sleeping in those capitalist structures because I understand them and my thinking go further than those pre-built ways of thinking. So I'm active... active in this forced sleep. I stay real to myself, I listen to my own thoughts and my inner identity and I refuse to let this society and zombies dictate to myself how I must think and behave. 

The fact that there’s no snare on that tune’s rhythmic expresses the idea that I go to those places and see those people without (most of the time) interacting with them, without trying to "attack" them ( = the snare in a composition – there’s only one snare in Active Sleep) with my different thinking and their own build truth. I can be myself with my students, but I see most adults as dead people because they killed their inner child and creativity and I have no time to waste (at least that's how I see it now) to try to "save" them.
