Performance Poet plus two excellent musicians get together to produce some usual poetry and music combinations. All poems from Collected Poems Vols 2&3 available via Amazon.                                   The older tracks are from the now legendary folk band Arkwrights Ferret that existed in London between 1977 - 1982. They were Graham Rhodes, Fang (RIP), Jane Southam (RIP), Chris Dring, Doug Pym and John Laskey.

In 1998, Youth (Martin Glover) decided to set up, LSD - Liquid Sound Design as Dragonfly's sister label, specialising in chilled out soundscapes, sonic beats and mellow grooves. LSD was as natural progression for Dragonfly keen to create an outlet for more experimental and down-tempo music as well as satisfying the demand for the post club chill out sounds

Dragonfly Records emerges from the cocoon and spreads its wings to fly again.
After a 15 years hibernation since the last release, finally the much anticipated re-launch has arrived and with it comes an exciting new installment of the seminal Order Odonata compilation series.  Next up is a full artist album from label head YOUTH, coming spring 2020.

Dragonfly Records was founded by Martin 'Youth' Glover in 1993 and was based at his Butterfly Studios in Brixton, London and was a seminal label in the Electronic trance music lineage and arguably the first UK / European Goa Trance label.

In early days pretty much all the main trance producers were working out of Butterly/Dragonfly. TIP, Flying Rhino, Total Eclipse and Hallucinogen, (Simon Posford and Ott were part of Butterfly’s in house engineer/production team). Early releases also included Goa produced music like Mandragora and Space Tribe. 

At the same time Butterfly was hosting The Orb, Laurent Garnier and The Drum club and many other artists were rubbing shoulders with our own artists, producers and engineers, as well as putting on multi-media parties and events.

Art exhibitions with Jimmy Cauty (KLF), theatrical productions, talks in the garden with such psychedelic luminaries as Terrance McKenna, Fraser Clarke, Brian Barritt and Lee Harris as well as some legendary huge outdoor raves, all of which combined to create an Arts Lab and a creative utopian hub unlike anything London has seen since the early days of Punk or even the late 60’s Summer Of Love.   

Today all of this legacy has magically alchemised into “Space Mountain” the state of the art studio built by Youth in Andalusia, Spain at the end of the 90’s and which now hosts The Space Mountain International Cosmic Arts Lab festival.

We are The Subterranean Gentlemen or The Sub-Gents if you like. We meet at our cloakroom base is in Scarborough, North Yorkshire and try to organize noise into music.

1993, and In the suburban borders of North Kent/South East London there was a palpable feeling of optimism. Matt Frost and Pete Diggens had been dreaming of big things ever since the demolition of the Berlin wall in ’89, after all, they now actually HAD a future to look forward to despite the fact that young people were still living under the repressive Chintzy grip of Margaret Thatcher’s grey offspring. They also now had the punk fuel of acid house and Public Enemy in their veins and were determined to bring their own version of the noise to 1930’s housing estates where they lived.
 
Frost and Diggens, formed Violent drum in 1993 in a one room garage behind a parade of shops on the corner of Central Avenue and Wickham Street in Welling, Kent. The studio had been built by a friend, with carpet and keyboards screwed to the walls and racks of effects where dusty pots of paint used to sit. The studio was owned by their older friends who were following in the footsteps of Stock, Aitken and Waterman and owned the grocers and newsagents in the parade of shops on Central Avenue but let Frost and Diggens use it during evening downtime.
 
Musically Frost and Diggens had both been inspired by the DIY spirit of the acid house scene but were not content to limit their influences to the normal acid influences of the day. They were passionate not only about the sounds of Chuck D and Flav’s Bomb Squad, but about the beauty of David Sylvian’s solo albums, Basic Channel’s ghost note groove, Stakker Humanoid’s raw excitement, Dead can dance’s otherworldlness and the ‘music concrete’ of swiss sample punks the Young Gods. They would spend the week, gathering ideas, then load up their Casio FZ1 and Akai S950 samplers and get on the bus to the studio on a Friday evening with the aim of emerging on Sunday morning with a 9 minute masterpiece burned onto cassette.

Nearly all the Violent Drum records were made this way.

Violent Drum threw the occasional party in London and released a stream of vinyl from 1993-96 and finished when Matt and Pete were discovered by Andy Weatherall at Sabresonic which led them to sign to Leftfield’s Hard Hands label in 1997 as Dark Globe.

Violent Drum’s output connected with dance music lovers worldwide, tracks made it onto compilation albums, featured in the charts and sets of the top DJ’s from all over the world. DJ’s such as Colin Dale, Ninja Tune’s Matt Black, Joey Beltram, Billy Nasty, Fabio Paras, Leftfield’s Paul Daley, Dave Angel, Darren Emerson, Carl Cox, DJ Three, Sasha & Digweed, Terry Farley and the man everyone looked to at the time, Mr. Andrew Weatherall regularly played Violent Drum vinyl.
 
Original vinyl copies can still be found on the second-hand market, for a hefty price. The duo regularly receive requests from fans around the world to find spare vinyl copies of ‘Silver Surfer’, ‘X O Surf’ (featured on an R&S compilation), ‘Your Nemesis’ and ‘Mondo Scuro’ (cited by many as the first ever ‘Breaks’ record pioneering the genre). Unfortunately, stocks of these ran out years ago and current labels regularly request to re-issue the tracks.

The complete works of Violent Drum Recordings released between 1993-96 will be rereleased in chronological order from August 2020.

The Deep’s ‘Silver Surfer’, ‘X O Surf’ and the ‘X O Surf remixes’ will be available digitally and on limited edition double vinyl from September 4 2020. Distributed by Republic of Music.
