This time COEO get back in time. They destroyed a couple of 1970ies disco jams. Recut & repasted them. And gave them their special COEO touch. Of course it’s irresistible!

Group Rhoda, the solo project of Mara Barenbaum, returns to Dark Entries with ‘Passing Shades’. An integral member of the Oakland electronic music scene, Barenbaum has been writing, performing, and plunging into oneiric depths as Group Rhoda since 2009. This is the project’s fourth LP, and the third time Barenbaum has collaborated with Dark Entries; previously on the Max & Mara LP ‘Less Ness’ in 2013 and the Group Rhoda LP ‘Wilderless’ in 2017.
Passing Shades is an investigation of the metaphysics of loss and the transitory nature of the material world. But it is not a grim collection; over 8 songs, Group Rhoda diverges through synthesizer-laden symphonics, four-to-the-floor inflections, and cosmic musings. Barenbaum’s striking voice and singular songcraft guide us through this labyrinth. Arpeggiated waltz “Flow” channels wisdom sought through martial arts; “Earthly Ark” sets a Margaret Atwood poem from the God Gardener’s Hymn Book to somber electronics. The vocoded canticle “Nevermore” is dedicated to the memory of a beloved cat. ‘Passing Shades’ is both mystifying and revelatory. Folk forms are echoed only to detour into the alien. Each song functions as both a fragment of a larger puzzle and a koan unto itself.

Group Rhoda - Twin Studies

We all know Nights are nicer when you are with your friends, so Ethimm asked some of his old friends and favourite acts to remix his recent EP 'By Night'. Quite a few hopped on the bandwagon: Germany's most prolific remixer and DJs DJ Gerd Janson turned Ethimm's 'Lies' into a relentlessly deep and driving house cut with drums reminiscent of New Order. Balearic boss Lexx stripped the track down to its bare vocal and rebuilt it with a 90ies New York vibe. Bell Towers added his prototypical leftfield approach to 'Don't Go Away' while Berlin's legendary DJ Kaos remade it into a classic acid stomper. The remix EP is completed by newcomer Never4Ever's breakbeat treatment of the same track and swiss experimental queen Belia Winnewisser's treatment of 'Island Jam'.

Riotvan co-label head Panthera Krause released his highly acclaimed debut album It's A Business Doing Pleasure With You one year ago but the music has not outgrown its momentum but become more suitable than ever. Robert's music – Panthera Krause's real name – simply covers what the world mostly is missing a fortiori at the moment: joy and happiness. The latter is continued with five remixes for the album coming from Rebolledo, Shubostar, Fango, Peter Invasion & Gregor Habicht and Scotsman Theo Kottis, who's known for writing intriguing melodies. His approach of Birthday Club apparently features one of the artist's lush bass lines in combination with vibrant and wobbling disco-esque chords that burn into one's mind like Robert's passionately flaming original version did a year ago. Happy Birthday it's a pleasure listening. 

Panthera Krause's It's A Business Doing Pleasure With You Remixes will be released on Riotvan on November 27th, 2020.

Kicking off 2021 in KOC’s teeming keepnet comes courtesy of Roza Terenzi & Fantastic Man under the guise of production unit B’Zircon. 

Merging the pair’s brill touch of trance-suffused elevation and ankle-twisting dynamics, ‘Lazulination’ EP finds the two producers unleashing a steadfast triad of genre-unbound, organic-grown jams out the deepest blue. 

Pulling out a savvy mix of muscular breaks and hi-NRG shuffle, the ‘90s atmospheric techno-laced roller ‘Azure’ revs up towards upper, euphoria-inducing layers of the ravey continuum. 

Breath-hold diving into lush cerulean ocean floors via white sand beachscapes, ‘Ultramarine’ has us speeding up the Gold Coast’s underwater canyons at full throttle. 

Topping off the release is Perko’s crossover of both tunes as one, taking us on a rivetingly soothing, bass-enhanced downtempo ride that shall please both ambient heads and laid-back dubs revellers in unison.

Dax Pierson’s debut solo LP is coming via San Francisco’s Electronic powerhouse imprint Dark Entries Records and Oakland’s Ratskin Records collective. Pierson, an Oakland-based underground legend, has pushed the boundaries of experimental electronic music with his soul-moving opus Nerve Bumps; A Queer Divine Dissatisfaction, an endeavor two long years in the making. On Nerve Bumps, Pierson blends hip hop, jazz, John Carpenter-esque arpeggios, trap/anti trap-influenced percussion, and musique concrete-informed experiments. Futuristic synthesizers cut through layers of fog as Pierson’s bombastic drum programming forges new worlds within themselves.
Pierson tells a complicated and inspiring story on Nerve Bumps, which is both a privilege and a gift to experience. Tracks such as “I Slay The Pain” reiterate that although Pierson has to live his life as a quadriplegic, this does not define him as an artist or as a person. The cinematic  “For The Angels” plays as a masterclass in heart and body-moving rhythms and undulating synthesizers. Pierson directly confronts the listener on “Snap”, an act of solidarity with the disabled community. Sputtering orchestral swells become encapsulated by splintering shards of Pierson’s voice, evoking his relentless determination to learn new music production methods as well as share his experience with losing certain physical abilities. The album’s closing track, “NTHNG FKS U HRDR THN TM”, is a perfect distillation of the varied emotions explored on the album. Warm, heavy synths masterfully guide us down a psychedelic slope through the track’s twelve minutes. On Nerve Bumps, honesty, empathy, and humanity bleed through the speakers like a dark liquid just beneath the skin’s surface. For Pierson, music is his lifeblood, both as a creator and a listener. 
Nerve Bumps was mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The front cover features a painting of pink and green horizontal stripes by Pierson’s partner, artist Chuck Nanney. A photograph of Pierson’s wheelchair by Lenny Gonzalez graces the back sleeve. Dax’s guiding mantra throughout this journey has been a quote from choreographer Martha Graham: “No artist is pleased… There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”

Exclusive: Nana Adjoa - Cardboard Castle (Kev Sheridan Remix)

Having released various EPs as well as singles on Maeve Kev Sheridan now leaves his musical home to remix Dutch artist Nana Adjoa. The latter released her album Big Dreaming Ants last year and has several artists (from the electronic music scene) remixing her original works. Kev took on remix duties for Cardboard Castle and while the original already contained a rather spherical and dark twist, the Berliner emphasized those adding a drum'n'bass-note to it but still manages to include the original vocals and the guitar riffs in a manner that transports the original vibe and message yet opens a new soundspectrum for both listeners and original artist. It's Sheridan's musical delicacy of feeling and how his remix is composed that make his version of Cardboard Castle one of these tracks that you want to listen to over and over again, at home, in the car or at the club. 

Nana Adjoa Cardboard Castle (Kev Sheridan Remix) will be released on Bloomer Records on February 12th, 2021.
