Into The Deep featuring Macy Gray

I sang “Colours” last night as a small tribute, with just my voice over acoustic guitar and a soft organ humming underneath. As I reached the first verse, the simple melody felt very close, and the organ filled in just enough warmth without overpowering the guitar. The mix of guitar and organ gave the song a slightly different texture than the classic folk version, but I felt it still honored Donovan’s spirit.

When I sang the lines about yellow, blue, green, and freedom, I could feel the emotional weight in the quiet moments — the organ would swell just enough to support, then pull back to let the acoustic strings lead. Performing it that way made me appreciate how delicate the song is, how much space it allows for expression. It was a modest tribute, but I felt connected to the song’s mood in every line.

Toussaint Morrison wrote the 1st verse for Baby Gots Venom in winter of 2014 and then, being the well-practiced self-saboteur he is, he stopped writing out of fear. Getting around to the spirit of Lesser Restoration, his soon-to-be-released debut album, Morrison befriends all his ghosts whether they be welcoming or not. Baby Gots Venom is no exception, and although it has disguised itself in the stripped down niceties of guitar, hand claps, and Morrison palming a plastic lid as a kick drum, listen closely and you’ll hear the new single for what it truly is: a neurotic dance on a one-way cyclical track. Whether the choreographed steps are cycling upwards or downwards, we’ll leave that to your own assessment.
Produced by Toussaint’s former bandmate from The Blend, Edward Folly on guitar, and his Phantom Menace, Dr. Wylie on everything else, Baby Gots Venom puts forth the best of Morrison in an unholy cabal of rap & soul shouting. Coming around to finish writing the song over 2 years later, it would be the highest deception to say this tune is “fresh”. Instead, it would be more appropriate to market this as “barrel-aged”.

Toussaint Morrison is a hopeless romantic and a super-villain. Abandoning a decade of front man’ing for live bands The Blend and Lazlo Supreme, Morrison joined forces with the evil Dr. Wylie, producer and confidant. The collaboration between the two has already generated this past year’s #1 Album on RapReviews.com’s Top Ten Albums of 2011, and looks to establish a national tour while depleting the monthly limit of free downloads from their bandcamp site. 

The 3-time national slam poet has not only paid his dues, he’s insisting on paying more than his tab; sampling an unconventional ensemble of sounds from Feist to Chicago to Weezer and on. Relaying tales of relationships doomed by bar-close, requited love thru emasculating reconciliation, and a run-in with a 2nd grader at a café over coffee & chemotherapy; the adventures of Toussaint Morrison Is Not My Boyfriend could warm even the hearts of the most cynical (Ann Coulture and winter in Minneapolis included). 

Funded by friends, family, and perfect strangers via Kickstarter, his new mixtape is the 1st in a series of 3 (consider it the first piece of the triforce). 17 stories/tracks/titles long, "Toussaint Morrison Is Not My Boyfriend" is the largest piece of literary work he has ever laid to sound. Also, as a rule of warning, when Toussaint isn’t crooning to women on campus or freestyling in character as Luke Cage, he’s busy concocting bonus tracks to follow an album such as the one before you, somewhat like low blows after the bell.
