Balrog’s debut album, “The Northern Powerhouse” is composed of 8 hard-hitting techno tracks, focusing on heavy, groove-ridden drums, driving basslines and obscure, distorted vocals. His tracks take influence from classic, hard-grooving techno but with a fresh injection of modern, industrial power.
The framework for the tracks was developed in the midst of the fallout from the UK leaving the EU and the numerous attempts to “level up” the north of the country through The Northern Powerhouse scheme, from which the album derives its name. Conceptually, the album is an attempt from the artist to dissociate himself from Brexit and the conservative government which has consistently stigmatised the most vulnerable in UK society and spread lies on an industrial scale in order to push forward their agenda.
           Through the album, a series of linked tracks mirror the raw divisions in society, not just between The North and The South of the UK, but also more widely representing divisions throughout the world.  As the album develops, a more hopeful outcome is suggested, seeing the culture of underground music as having the potential to build connections and incite resistance in an increasingly divided world.

This is Substantiv’s premiere of 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗹’s remix of 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗻 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁 & 𝗥𝗮̊’s track 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲 on her label 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗢𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻. 

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗪𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗻 is the seventh act of rebellion, an all-gender diverse production. The record unites Linn Elisabet’s transgressive techno productions with Rå’s eclectic poetry, portray-ing and reimagining trans, non-binary and queer lives. The Hills We’ve Chosen is released in a limited 12” format, where each cover is uniquely designed by 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗵, in a three-layer transparent and holographic celebration of gender-diverse beauty and interconnectedness. Among the guests of the release we find multidisciplinary artist and 𝗕𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 affiliate 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵, 𝗡𝗼 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 head 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗹, and  𝗛𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗹, who runs the FLINTA-centering collective 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 in Berlin.

Wa (和) - which means "harmony". “Wa” is the oldest recorded name for Japan, and occurs in several ancient Chinese texts. However, the Chinese used a different kanji for this name: 倭. Unfortunately, this character also has the rather unflattering meaning of “dwarf”, and not surprisingly the Japanese didn’t like it. Sometime in the 8th century they decided to switch 倭 for 和 which had the same pronunciation, but the much more pleasing meaning of “harmony”.
