Dylan Forbes 393x04

For it’s fourth instalment Dublin imprint 393 welcomes Dylan Forbes to the fold, and with this comes the labels first solo 12”. Forbes is an up and coming Irish producer and for his debut on 393 delivers an EP that fits in perfectly with the label’s previous releases, melding house, techno, bleep and acid sounds across 4 songs.  

Opening with the suitably-titled Hypnotise,  Forbes is at his most restrained, teasing with a broken beat rhythm and svelte minor chord progression before the acid starts to seep in underneath the timeless groove, eventually stripping the track back to just the 303 and drums.  
For the midsection of the release those familiar with the sounds of Transmat-era Aril Brihka and the 3rd wave of Detroit-inspired techno will find much to love in the driving progressions and ethereal soundscapes of Starburst and the slamming chords of Trip 2 Jupiter which really gives this record a classic feel 
Inspiral closes out the EP with the releases most dancefloor heavy cut, taking its cues not just from classic Detroit but also the rave-inflected bleep & acid sounds of Sheffield, while always keeping a strong melodic temperament. 393x04 is not only designed with the club in mind but across it’s 4 songs has many moods to fit the floor depending on the time and stage of the night. One can’t ask for much more than that...

Nicolas Duque is a relative newcomer to the scene with only a couple of releases under his belt. However, he managed to develop a recognizable and distinct sound influenced by hazy 90s House Music and UK Garage that is deep and quirky at the same time. So far the Colombian-based artist released music on renowned British labels like Lobster Theremin, Dansu Discs or Nuances de Nuit as well as a release on Magic Carpet and has some new stuff already lined up for this year. Shortly after returning from the a short trip to the sea the artist sat down with Torture the Artist reflecting on his production process his EDM and Tech House past and pondered about possible pandemic influences on the scene as well as him as an artist. Ultimately Nicolas has mixed and compiled the latest art:cast, which pretty much sums up the artist’s current musical being.

Over the last two years, Percebes sought to upgrade public perception of locally created electronic and urban music by placing it along international producers, in a compilation series of two volumes called Produto Interno Bruto (PIB) - portuguese for “Gross Domestic Product”.

Released digitally (first on the label’s Bandcamp page and later on all online platforms), these showed the outside world not only what Lisbon based artists are about but also how they can fit in a wider picture. The compilations also helped to deconstruct a narrative that isn’t particularly accurate about electronic / dance / urban music made in Lisbon in international circles. In fact, PIB offers an alternative- perhaps more tangible - perspective on who and what you can actually listen to when going out at night in Portugal. Well, at least partly (it was never meant to be a definitive document).

The label was later able to cut a functional collection of tracks compiled from both volumes onto glorious wax... and here we are! Pure portuguese underground talent sided with tracks from our closest friends in the international scene. The double LP collects tracks chosen by myself  from volumes I and II of PIB and also adds a little extra by including a bonus vinyl exclusive by Cyclonix. For practical reasons, it was impossible to include all 22 tracks of both volumes on this vinyl, but it’s still possible to appreciate every artist featured by finding the download codes inside and get a full digital PIB pack (with all 22 tracks, plus a bonus release). 

We’re doing out part to provide you with a pristine sounding, powerful, useful and varied compilation that you can carry in your record bag for all sorts of situations - and also to fill up your USB sticks, phones and laptops with much more content for a reasonable price.

Bringing in Tapes #61 is London-based musician Primrose, who creates spellbinding, colourful electronic music. He blends bouncy club focused rhythms and the other-worldly soundscapes of dreampop, film soundtracks, and shoegaze, culminating into a fresh and distinctive sound that he affectionately refers to as ‘Blade Runner Techno’. 

As a DJ, Primrose is drawn to dramatic, emotional sounds and storming rhythmic transmissions from across the spectrum of electronic music and beyond, weaving between house, techno, 80s New Wave, post-punk & EBM.

Heavy House Society drops a high end collaboration between two heavyweights, Sidney Charles and Archie Hamilton for a standout two-tracker. On the Reset EP, they both deliver a pair of refined, groove-driven cuts that showcase the depth of their shared house and minimal house sensibilities.

'Reset' is built on a tight, swinging groove that fuses chunky basslines with crisp, shuffling percussion. Subtle chord stabs and atmospheric flourishes, inject depth and tension, while the stripped framework leaves space for momentum to build. Slick and modern, it's a hypnotic rollercoaster crafted with underground dancefloors in mind.

On the flip, 'The Future Is Now' keeps things locked to the floor with a punchy low-end foundation and rolling percussion. His upfront, groove-led productions such as House Lessons and Warehouse Romance underline his reputation for rough, dirty sounds that defined the old school pioneers, but all with a modern, full and punchy approach, as Sidney favours.
