In the beginning, there was Jack... a legacy that continues to inspire. And it’s this classic sound that motivated Australia-based Irish producer and father of two teenage music critics, Denats, to push himself in the studio. His goal? To craft tracks powerful enough to catch the attention of his favourite record labels.

With a deep-rooted passion for music, shaped in the '90s and refined behind the decks, Denats drew further inspiration from the incredible support of the Robsoul community, including icons like Demuir and label head Phil Weeks. After countless hours initially spent working “in the box” and later expanding his setup with hardware, Denats is now ready, signed and set to release his debut EP on Robsoul Recordings amongst other great labels such as MK837, Groovphoria, Purveyor Underground and The Underground Chronicles amongst others. 

“No matter where I start, I always end up near that jacking house sound… hopefully with my own twist on it,” Denats explains.

Hailing from Glasgow, Scotland — a city steeped in underground culture and home to the legendary Sub Club — “The-Peas” earned his stripes grooving on that floor. Behind the decks as a 16-year-old, now 30+ years deep in the underground house scene, he’s carved out an inimitable groove — delivering high-energy, peak-time party sets rooted in raw House, with samples of hip-hop, jazz, soul, funk, and techno.

Sleazy hi-hats. Chunky slabbed beats. Twisted jazz.
This is groove with grit — deeply influenced by the OG Chicago House godfathers, he brings a new school strut to a timeless sound.

Across the 2000s, he held down residencies with ChicFreak (MAS & Art School), Clubdup, Air Organic, and BarSoba — bringing the vibe to underground parties and radio — from Glasgow to Amsterdam, Toronto to Chicago.

Now, he’s channelling decades of dancefloor energy into highly crafted productions — already releasing on some of the world’s most consistent underground labels like Cross Section Music, Groovphoria Records, Feel the Funk, and most recently Toronto’s Purveyor Underground.

Step2 records has been around since 2020 and has been supporting new producers in the UK Garage and bassline scene since then. The label is run by music producers (Dj Severe & Dj Pencil) for music producers. The Ethos is to provide open and honest dialogue with its producers and artists that sign up to the label. We believe that we are going to become the go to UK Garage label for any new producer wanting to get their first release to the general public. We provide feedback on all demos sent in to us (send to demos@step2records.co.uk) and generally respond within 48 hours.  The label has had support from BBC Radio One, BBC Introducing, Kiss FM, Rinse FM and many more with tracks featuring on Spotify editorial playlists and  large listener playlists aswell. We also have tracks released from some of the biggest names in the scene such as Tuff Culture, WZA, One Dark Martian, Groove Synergy (Ricky Magic Martin) The Legendary Ed Case and Speed Garage new school legend Daffy. We have countless top ten Chart entries with our releases and we continue to grow. Completely independent and always on the look out for the next big release.

Hailing from Wales, UK. He began DJing in 1996 before studying audio engineering at Alchemea College, London, graduating in 1998.

His breakthrough came in 2009 with a remix of Conscious Mind on Tharsis Records, alongside Hy2RoGeN, followed by a remix of Ben Delay’s Inner Circle on Techtone Records. Between 2009 and 2010, he released multiple remixes and originals across various labels under differing aliases. 

In 2010, he stepped back from production to focus on family life. Now, with renewed passion and fresh ideas, Sugarbrn is ready to reconnect with artists and labels to create new music.
